John Joseph Unrein 1919-2000
LA CROSSE - John Joseph Unrein, 81, died Feb. 28 at Rush County Memorial
Hospital in La Crosse. He was born Feb. 10, 1919, at the family farm in
rural Rush County, the son of Peter and Katherine Hertel Unrein. He married
Monica Schaffer Nov. 21, 1939, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at
Schoenchen. A lifetime resident of Rush County, he was an employee of Rush
County Highway Department for 31 years, retiring in 1982.
Unrein was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and a Third Degree
member of Knights of Columbus, both of La Crosse.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Leslie James Unrein of
Lee's Summit, Mo.; two daughters, Carol Jean Schaben of Independence, Mo.,
and Paula Kay Schuckman of Wichita; three brothers, Paul Unrein, Alvin
Unrein and Celly Unrein; two sisters, Barbara Hansen and Genevive
Holzmeister; four half-brothers, Joe Unrein, Frank Unrein, Larry Unrein and
Clem Unrein: one half-sister, Josephine Quint; six grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. He was preceded in death
by his stepmother, Agatha Leikem; six brothers, John Unrein, Jacob Unrein,
Carl Unrein, Ben Unrein, Tony Unrein and Henry Unrein; and two sisters,
Emma Unrein and Mary Unrein.
Parish rosary will be at 7 tonight, followed by a Knights of Columbus
rosary at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral will be at 11 a.m.
Thursday at the church with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial
will be at La Crosse City cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from 5-9
tonight and from 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to Knights of Columbus, in care of the funeral home.

Fern Lucille Lohrey 1920-2000
LA CROSSE - Fern Lucille Lohrey, 79, died Feb. 28 at Hays Medical Center,
St. Anthony Campus in Hays.
Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Janousek Funeral
Home Inc. in La Crosse.

Theodore 'Ted' Wilkens 1906-2000
LORRAINE - Theodore "Ted" Wilkens, 93, died Feb. 29 at Hutchinson Hospital
in Hutchinson. He was born Aug. 23, 1906, at Ellsworth County, the son of
Oscar and Anna Homburg Wilkens. He married Thelma A. Hays Nov. 4, 1928, in
Wichita. She died April 4, 1982. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County,
he was a retired farmer and served as Ellsworth County sheriff from 1961-64
and as Ellsworth County commissioner from 1975-86.
Wilkens was a member of First Baptist Church of Lorraine.
Survivors include one son, Glenn Wilkens of Overland Park; two daughters,
Mary Mullender of Vista, Calif., and Ellen Ehler of Holyrood; one brother,
Harold "Red" Wildins of Lorraine; one sister, Ruth Huebner of Bushton; six
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
one brother, Kenneth Wilkens; and one sister, Frances Kessler.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Revs. Robert
Albin and Calvin Alderine officiating. Burial will be at Lorraine Baptist
Cemterty. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Parsons Funeral Home in
Ellsworth and from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials are
suggested to the church or Hutchinson Good Samaritan Home, both in care of
the funeral home.

E.B. 'Boots' Estes 1908-2000
MACKSVILLE - E. B. "Boots" Estes, 91, died Feb. 28 at Stafford District
Hospital in Stafford. He was born Oct. 7, 1908, in Eubank, Ky., the son of
William Green "Willie" and Lillie Inola Estes. He was a 1927 graduate of
Radium High School. He married Bertha May Rose July 14, 1935, in Radium.
She died Aug. 19, 1971. He married Grace Heuble Oct. 28, 1972, in Pratt. A
resident of Macksville since 1945, coming from Eubank, he was a retired
farmer and carpenter.
Estes was a member of Macksville Christian Church of Macksville, Ionic
Lodge 254, Henry Rohr Chapter 204, Order of Eastern Star and Golden Belt
Campers of St. John.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Owen Bradley Estes of
Manhattan; one daughter, Sharon Kay Crissman of St. John; one stepson,
Larry Heublein of Blue Springs, Mo.; one brother, Glen Estes of Grapevine,
Texas; four sisters, Hazel Barstow of Harlingen, Texas, Orva Jean Oehler of
Weki Washee, Fla., Dolores Crawford of Hoisington and Marilyn Kellogg of
Great Bend; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one
stepgrandson; and two stepgreat-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by
one grandson, Kerry Bradley Crissman; one brother, Charles Ray Estes; and
two sisters, Opal Halstead and Carol Moore.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Carey Haner
officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends
may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials are
suggested the church, Ionic Lodge 254 or Order of Eastern Star 204, all in
care of the funeral chapel.

Rotha Lee Brada 1915-2000
HUTCHINSON - Rotha Lee Brada, 84, died April 28 at Hutchinson Hospital. She
was born Nov. 30, 1915, in Larned, the daughter of William Franklin and
Beatrice S. Musselman Grenell. She married George Pryor Sept. 21, 1933. He
died. She married J. Duane Brada March 19, 1976 at Las Vegas, Nev. She was
a graduate of Larned High School and a Hutchinson resident since 1985,
having moved from Wichita. She also lived in Lyons, Larned, Great Bend and
Ellinwood.
Mrs. Brada was of the Protestant faith and a member of Women of the Moose,
Hutchinson Chapter No. 1371; and American Legion Auxiliary, Lysle Rishel
Post No. 68.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Deidre Collier
of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Brenda Carpenter of Lansing and Vickie Befort
of Hutchinson; two stepsons, Dr. Don Brada of Wichita and Gayle Brada of
Lakeside, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one son, William "Dub" Pryor; one brother, Rodney
Grenell; and one granddaughter.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson
with the Rev. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 5 -9 p.m. Monday at
the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or
American Heart Association.

Martin L.J. Isern 1922-2000
ELLINWOOD - Martin L.J. Isern, 78, died April 28 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose campus, in Great Bend. He was born April 23, 1922, at
rural Ellinwood, the son of Landry A. and Emma H. Manke Isern. He married
Florene Schmitt April 23, 1950, at Atchison. She died April 3, 1994, at
Ellinwood. He was an attorney who opened his law office in Ellinwood in
1952.
Isern was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Rotary Club and American
Legion, all of Ellinwood; and the Kansas Bar Association. He was a Marine
Corps and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three sons, John Isern of Ellinwood, Mark Isern of Olathe
and Myron Isern of San Ramon, Calif.; one daughter, Jane Isern of Great
Bend; one brother, Marlin Isern of Ellinwood; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Andy
Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in
Ellinwood. Friends may visit from 1-9 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home in
Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to the church endowment fund or
Ellinwood Schools Education Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

Mary M. Paris 1908-2000
LARNED - Mary M. Paris, 91, died April 28 at the Larned Health Care and
Living Center in Larned. She was born Aug. 26, 1908, at Larned, the
daughter of Webb and Mary Mooney Paris. She was a lifetime resident of
Larned.
Miss Paris was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Larned.
Survivors include numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by one
sister, Frances Wendel.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Dennis
Reed officiating. Burial will be at the Larned cemetery. Friends may call
until 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Memorials are
suggested to the church in care of the mortuary.

Oscar H. Bortz 1909-2000
CLAFLIN - Oscar H. Bortz, 90, died April 28 at Hoisington Rehabilitation
Center. He was born Oct. 31, 1909, in Barton County, the son of John and
Anna Steinecke Bortz. He married Flora B. Buehler Nov. 12, 1932, at La
Crosse. She died Oct. 24, 1975. He married Mary V. Piazza in April, 1977.
She died March 4, 1996. A lifetime resident of Claflin, he was an oilfield
roustabout and pumper for Mobil Oil Co.
Bortz was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion and
Pastime Club, all of Claflin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one son, Richard G. Bortz of Great Bend; one daughter,
Marilyn R. Robl of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three
step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred
Bortz, Walter Bortz and Leonard Bortz; and three sisters, Leona Bortz,
Louise Knox and Esther Swayzne.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Lou Davies
officiating. Burial will be at Claflin Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8
p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to service time
Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Claflin Ambulance
Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Mollie Hemel 1902-2000
NESS CITY - Mollie Hemel, 97, died April 27 at Ness County Long Term Care
in Ness City. She was born Sept. 16, 1902, at Milberger, the daughter of
Jacob and Anna Hemel Funk. She married Phillip Hemel July 1, 1935, at
Bazine. He died July 9, 1976. She was a homemaker and resident of Ness City
since 1971. Her family came from Russia in 1902.
Mrs. Hemel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ness City.
Survivors include one son, Ronald Hemel of Ness City; three daughters,
Arlene Smith of Hoxie, Carol Schmitter of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and Dorothy
Filson of Wichita; one brother, Bennie Funk of Littleton, Colo.; one
sister, Alma Betz of Great Bend; three grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, including
Herman Funk of Scott City; and three sisters.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bazine cemetery with the
Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at
Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City. Memorials are suggested to the
American Cancer Society and to the church, in care of the funeral home.
