Fern B. Weathers 1901-2000
Fern B. Weathers, 98, died March 16 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great
Bend. She was born Sept. 27, 1901, at Lewistown, Ohio, the daughter of
James F. and Emma Viola Kerns Pettit. She married
Chester Weathers Feb. 21,
1920, at Great Bend. He died Dec. 9, 1989. A resident of Great Bend for
most of her life, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Weathers was a member of First Congregational, United Church of
Christ, Dorcas Club and American Legion Auxiliary, was a charter member of
Great Bend Garden Club and past member of Harmony Club.
Survivors include one son, Russell Weathers of Great Bend; one brother,
Ervin Pettit of Great Bend; one sister, Mildred Kirby of Sacramento,
Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend with the Rev. Dick Near officiating. Burial will be at Great
Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

James Rodney Orth 1949-2000
GARDEN CITY - James Rodney Orth, 50, died March 15 at St. Catherine
Hospital in Garden City. He was born Dec. 20, 1949, at Wichita, the son of
Harold P. and Helen L. Downey Orth. A resident of Garden City and Great
Bend, he was a supervisor for Francis Casing.
Orth was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. He was a
U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam.
Survivors include three brothers, Dennis M. Orth of Fort Worth, Texas,
Harold L. Orth Sr. of Great Bend and Stanley T. Orth of Austin, Texas; and
one sister, Priscilla A. Orth of Peabody.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Warren
Stecklein officiating. Private inurnment will be later. Friends may call
from 6-9 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Evelyn S. Jacobs 1914-2000
DUBUQUE - Evelyn S. Jacobs, 85, died March 16 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. Survivors and funeral arrangements

Walter W. Michaelis 1907-2000
RUSSELL - Walter W. Michaelis, 92, died March 15 at Wheatland Nursing
Center in Russell. He was born Nov. 10, 1907, at Russell County, the son of
William and Amelia Strecker Michaelis. He married
Rachel C. Keil June 26,
1927, near Russell. She died Oct. 1, 1999. A resident of Russell for most
of his life, he worked in dirt and road construction until his retirement
and worked for Becker Farms for a number of years.
Michaelis was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Michaelis of Liberal, Larry Michaelis
of Lyons and Bill Michaelis of Russell; three daughters, Delores Hanhardt
of Bison, Elaine Paulson of Salina and Shirley Roth of LaSalle, Colo.; two
sisters, Ophelia Keeton of Phillipsburg and Lenetta Deutsch of Hoisington;
30 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
two sons, Vennard Michaelis and an infant; four daughters, Melba Kuhn,
Patricia Dumler, Sharon Mitchell and infant daughter; and three brothers,
Huldrich Michaelis, Oscar Michaelis and Delmar Michaelis.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell
with the Rev. Michael Fibranz officiating. Burial will be at Michaelis
Cemetery in Russell. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home
and 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested
to the church of Wheatland Nursing Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Helen I. Marchand, 91, died today at Integrated Health Services in Great
Bend. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by

Paul Clinton Radke 1926-2000
CLAFLIN - Paul Clinton Radke, 73, died March 3 at his home. He was born
Oct. 19, 1926, at Hoisington, the son of Paul B. and Clara E. Brack Radke.
He was a graduate of Hoisington High School in Hoisington and Emporia State
Teachers College in Emporia. A resident of Claflin since 1986, coming from
Indianola, Neb., he was a retired roustabout and pumper for Amoco
Production Company.
Radke was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Hoisington. He was a
U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
Survivors include three brothers, Norma Radke of Lindsborg, Allan Radke of
Pinedale, Wyo., and Bill E. Radke of Hoisington. He was preceded in death
by one brother, John Radke.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington with the Rev. Garry Dassow officiating. Burial will be at
Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday and 9 am. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. The
casket will remain closed. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care
of the funeral home.

Minnie Olive Cole Hoch Stetler 1907-2000
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Minnie Olive Cole Hoch Stetler, 92, died Feb. 18 at Las
Palomas Nursing Center in Albuquerque. She was born Nov. 27, 1907, at Scott
City, the daughter of James Elrick and Louise Slaughter Cole. She was a
graduate of Great Bend High School. A resident of Albuquerque, coming from
Great Bend and Hutchinson, she worked for 30 years as a bill of lading
clerk for Santa Fe Railroad, before retiring.
Survivors include two sons, Edward Stetler of Lakeland, Fla., and Phillip
Dale Hoch of Topeka; one daughter, JoAnn Schulz of Albuquerque; one
brother, James Delbert Cole of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Eva Patterson of
Great Bend; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by one son, William E. Hoch.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairlawn Burial Park.
There will be no visitation. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9
p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are
suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Claude E. Littrell 1907-2000
CEDAR VALE - Claude E. Littrell, 92, died March 13 at Cedar Vale Regional
Hospital in Cedar Vale. He was born Nov. 16, 1907, at Green Forest, Ark.,
the son of George Washington and Nancy Lawrence Littrell. He married
Isabella Wood Nov. 29, 1932, at Winfield. She died Dec. 18, 1990. A
resident of Cedar Vale, he had been a propane delivery truck driver for
Cedar Vale Co-op Exchange until retiring in 1972. After retiring he did
carpentry and handyman work in the Cedar Vale area.
Littrell was a member of Cedar Vale First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Littrell of Chautauqua and Raymond
Littrell of Cedar Vale; two daughters, Louise Goode of Sedan and Marguerite
Kingsbury of Great Bend; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Cedar
Vale cemetery in Cedar Vale. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday
at Wheeler Funeral Home in Cedar Vale. Memorials are suggested to the
church, in care of the funeral home.

Lola Mae Button 1929-2000
LA CROSSE - Lola Mae Button, 70, died March 13 at Mercy Hospital in
Oklahoma City, Okla. She was born Dec. 30, 1929, at Nekoma, the daughter of
Leroy and Leona Erdsick Seaman. She married
Kenneth R. Button Jan. 22,
1949, at Nekoma. A lifetime resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker
and had been a schoolteacher for two years.
Mrs. Button was a member of United Methodist Church, Town & Country Ladies
Club and Walnut Valley Senior Center, all of La Crosse, and Order of
Eastern Star Starlight Chamber 84 of Ness City and was a volunteer for many
organizations, including Friendship Meals, Second Chance and Barbed Wire
Museum.
Survivors include one son, Gary Button of Rush Center; one daughter, Kenna
Slattery of Yukon, Okla.; two brothers, Clifton Seaman of Fremont, Neb.,
and James Seaman of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Phyllis Showalter of
Alexander, Yvonne Romine of Tillamook, Ore., Carol McClure of Wesley
Chapel, Fla., and Sharon George of Wichita; and four grandhchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Marilyn
Christmore officiating. Burial will follow at La Crosse City Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 tonight at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse and
from noon to service time Thursday at the church in La Crosse. Memorials
are suggested to Walnut Valley Senior Center or the church, in care of the
funeral home.

Walter F. 'Walt' Abel 1924-2000
OTIS - Walter F. "Walt" Abel, 75, died March 13 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born April 6, 1924, at
Hominy, Okla., the son of Homer Ellis and Dena Mae Lee Able. He married
Betty Kerbs June 29, 1947, at Hutchinson. A resident of Otis since 1980,
coming from Liberal, he was owner and operator of Abel Dirt Construction in
Liberal.
Able was a member of Otis United Methodist Church of Otis and Elks Lodge
and Masonic Lodge, both of Liberal.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Ronda Priem of
Hutchinson; and one grandson.
Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Otis Methodist Cemetery
with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Memorials are suggested to
the church, in care of Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory.
