Leoan Soper
1919 - 2008
Inurnment services for Leoan Soper, 88, Eudora, will be in De Soto at a later date.
Mrs. Soper died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in Peoria, Ariz.
She was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Derby, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil and Melvin Petty. She lived in Derby, Russell and Chariton, Iowa, and moved to Arizona in 2000.
Mrs. Soper was a caregiver and worked for the Olathe Hospital and Good Samaritan Home in Olathe for many years. She later returned to work at the De Soto Nursing Home before she retired in 2000.
She married
Herbert E. Soper in Olathe. They shared 38 years of marriage. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Soper was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Wayne A. Petty, Leonard L. Petty, Clell R. Petty, and Richard V. Petty; and a sister, Kathryn M. Petty.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin E. Soper, Eudora, and Gary G. Soper, Peoria, Ariz.; a daughter, Janice L. Martin, Red Oak, Okla.; three sisters, Marjorie D. Davidson, Rock Island, Ill., Madge E. Foster, Des Moines, Iowa, Carole A. Abels, Bemidji, Minn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
James R. Bush
Funeral services for James R. Bush, 45, Lawrence, KS, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. He died on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after a sudden heart attack while umpiring baseball in Johnson County.
He was born on August 21, 1965 in Somerville, New Jersey, the son of Daniel and Dixie Norma Langston Bush. He moved to Lawrence with his wife and children in December 2002.
Mr. Bush was working in sales and marketing for Maceli’s in Lawrence. He was the former senior pastor at the First Southern Baptist Church in Lawrence from 2003 – 2007. He has since then served as an interim pastor at the First Baptist Church in Bellevue, NE. Earlier in his career, he served the First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville, IL, the First Baptist Church in Union City, TN, The Cheat Lake Baptist Church in Morgantown, WV and the First Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, FL.
He held academic degrees from University of South Carolina, B.A. in Political Science 1987, and Master’s of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY in 1992. He had begun doctoral studies at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City in 2006.
Mr. Bush was a member of the First Southern Baptist in Lawrence, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, the Lawrence Rotary Club and was the former president of the Lawrence Central Rotary Club. He was a former candidate for the Lawrence City Commission. He was a certified coach, had worked as a volunteer for the Salvation Army bell ringing, and as a volunteer for the United Way Day of Caring. He was also a co-founder of Passport, Inc a camping experience for youth. He officiated at area youth football, basketball and baseball games.
He was married
to Sandra “Sandy” Knight on August 22, 1992 in Florence AL. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Esther Bush, of the home, two sons, James Bush, Jr., and Langston Bush, both of the home. He is also survived by a brother, Dan Bush, of Boston, MA and a sister, Sharon Bush, of Englewood, New Jersey, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Educational Fund for the Children of James & Sandy Bush and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
Wilma Clark
1935 - 2008
Tonganoxie - Services for Wilma Clark, 72, Tonganoxie, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April1 24, at West Haven Baptist Church, Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.
Mrs. Clark died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at her home.
Wilma Jean Cannell was born Nov. 30, 1935, in Tebbetts, Mo., the daughter of Edward and Meryl Blair Cannell.
Mrs. Clark was a member of West Haven Baptist Church and Rinda Chapter No. 82 Order of the Eastern Star, both of Tonganoxie.
She retired as a manager at Mutual Savings Association, Tonganoxie, in 1993.
She was married
to Harold D. Clark on June 14, 1953, in De Soto; he survives of the home.
Other survivors include four daughters, Shelly Hunter, Ginger Hoffhines and Terri Brest, all of Tonganoxie, and Dwynne Riegel, Chapman; two brothers, Charlie Cannell, Elon, N.C., and Dale Cannell, De Soto; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Paul G. Lester, 89, Tonganoxie, KS, died Tuesday June 15, 2010 at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

Richard Paul Ward
Richard Paul Ward, 31, Tonganoxie, KS, died Saturday July 10, 2010 at the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, KS.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday July 15, 2010 at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie, KS, with visitation one hour before. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Emri C. Kimbrough
2007 - 2008
Emri Cielo Kimbrough, infant son of Rachel L. Sheafer and Caleb L. Kimbrough, De Soto, died Feb. 15, 2008, at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park.
Funeral services were Wednesday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. There was a visitation before the services. Graveside services followed the funeral at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Green, KS.
Emri was born Oct. 30, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Merriam. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Sharon and Roy Wogoman, Winfield, and Tony and Carolyn Sheafer, De Soto; paternal grandparents, Scott and Nancy Kimbrough, Green; two aunts, and four uncles.

Esther E. Ellis
1915 - 2008
Memorial services for Esther E. Ellis will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel in De Soto. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the chapel.
Mrs. Ellis died Feb. 6 at Olathe Medical Center. She was 92.
She was born May 6, 1915, in Gardner, the daughter of Clarence B. Alvin and Harriet Josesa Osborne Hale. Mrs. Ellis was a member of the De Soto United Methodist Church. Since 1946, she was a member of the De Soto chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a worthy matron from 1949-1950. She worked several years at Kobler's Drug Store and was postal clerk at the De Soto Post Office from 1965 to her retirement in 1977. She served on the Gardner Community Medical Center for 25 years and was the board's secretary for 15 years.
Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Ellis. Survivors include a son Gary Ellis of Eudora, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Robert Mitchell
1955 - 2008
Funeral services for Robert "Bob" Mitchell, 53, Phoenix, were Wednesday, May 21, at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Meriden Chapel in Meriden. Burial was in Grantville Cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at his home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1955, in Lawrence, the son of Manly Glen and Elva May Gillespie Mitchell. He was a resident of the De Soto area and moved to Phoenix 11 years ago.
Mr. Mitchell was a master technician auto mechanic and worked for Toyota for 20 years.
He was a member of North Valley Baptist Church in Phoenix.
He married
Julie Ann May on Dec. 28, 1974, in Kansas City, Mo. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Tyson Mitchell and Todd Mitchell, both of Phoenix; two daughters, Misty Mitchell and Katelynn May, both of Phoenix; three brothers, Larry Mitchell, Gardner, James Mitchell, Moore, Okla., and Jerry Mitchell, Paola; three sisters, Norma Hoffine, Vancouver, Wash., and Carol Newport and Janie Gumm, both of De Soto; and a granddaughter.

Albert W. English
Visitation for Albert W. English were Saturday at Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner. A family then received visitors Tuesday at Oakey's Funeral Chapel in Roanoke, Va. with graveside services following at Sherwood cemetery in Roanoke.
Mr. English was born April 24, 1924, in Roanoke to Winston and Clara (Wray) English. He graduagted in Roanoke College in Salem, Va., with a bachelor's in physics and math. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Overland Park and an avid reader.
He marrided Frances Ashworth of Roanoke. The couple lived in Virginia, New Jersey and Utah before settling in Kansas in 1976 and Mr. English was employed by Hercules Inc.
He was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Moses. He is survived by his wife, Frances, of the home; daughter Tina Diane English, Pleasanton; and adopted grandchildren Nicole Roush and Kelsey Roush Smith.
The family suggest memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
Martha E. Zindler De Soto
Memorial services for Martha E. Zindler, 91, De Soto, were Tuesday, May 19, at Hillside Village. She was born July 16, 1916, in New Castle, Ind., the second of five daughters of Chester & Ruth Gold. She resided in St. Joseph, Mich., for 84 years before moving to Hillside Village, De Soto.
She married
Charles Zindler in 1938, who preceded her in death in 2001. She is survived by a daughter, Charlene Zindler of St. Joseph, and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Linda Zindler, of De Soto, two grand children, and 2 great grand children.
Memorials can be made to the Hillside Village Activities Department.
Gavin Christopher Smith
Gavin Christopher Smith, of Lawrence, KS, died on Tuesday, September 28, while hiking in the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. His death came only 17 days after his 30th birthday. He is survived by his loving wife, Melissa and beloved 2 year old son, Liam Christopher, both of whom were his greatest joy.
Born in Lakenheath, England, September 11, 1980, to Greg and Julie Smith, Gavin spent most of his childhood in Papillion, Nebraska. He was a 1999 graduate of Papillion LaVista High School. Following graduation he moved to Lawrence, Kansas to attend the University of Kansas where he lived until his death.
Gavin was the owner of Fatso’s Public House and Stage in Lawrence, KS, co-chair of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals Network and recent graduate of Leadership Lawrence. He was an active and respected member in the Lawrence community and cherished by so many. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
Always willing to lend a helping hand to friends, Gavin will forever be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. His passion for life and his love for the family and friends who meant so much to him was undeniable. He lived his days to the fullest, instilling a sense of grandeur while here on this earth. As one person recently commented, “Frankly, Gavin could probably be claimed to be the best friend of 100 people. He was that kind of guy.” Because he lived and loved so grandly, it was only fitting that his life ended in such a wondrous and beautiful place as the Grand Canyon.
In addition to his wife and child, Gavin is survived by his father and mother Greg and Julie Smith of McKinney, Texas; sister Courtney Smith Love and brother-in-law Michael Love; two nephews and a niece, Jack, Noah and Caroline Love of Dallas, Texas; sister and brother-in-law Jennifer and Mike Kraisan; nephew and niece Devin and Madalyn Kraisan of St. Louis, Missouri; paternal grandmother Charlotte Smith of Bowling Green, Kentucky and many numerous family members.
He is preceded in death by paternal grandfather Willard Smith; and maternal grandparents Harold and Florine Manning.
Services will be held, Thursday, October 7th, at Trinity Episcopal Church at 3 p.m., followed by a celebration of Gavin’s life at Liberty Hall at from 4 to 6 p.m. Family Inurnment will be at Pioneer cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Gavin C. Smith Memorial Fund to benefit Liam Smith through Peoples Bank in Lawrence, KS.
