Jack C. Kelley

Jack C. Kelley, 85, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery. Jack was born March 10, 1922, in Arkansas City, to Earl Preston Kelley and Ruby Agnes (Martin) Kelley. He attended Arkansas City schools, graduating from the high school in 1941. Jack entered the United States Army, serving in the Philippine Islands and Japan. On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Hazel L. Baker in Arkansas City and the couple made their home in Wichita. Jack worked for Boeing for 20 years. In 1982, they moved to Arkansas City where Jack worked as a truck driver at Total Petroleum. Jack was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Kelley of the home; son, Richard Kelley and wife, Evelyn, of Molalla, Ore.; brother, Bob Kelley and wife, Annette, of Wichita; sisters, Betty Gilbert, of Yukon, Okla.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Kelley, of Sand Springs, Okla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Don Kelley in 1992.
A memorial has been established with the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Dale Prentice Anderson

Dale Prentice Anderson, 89, Newkirk resident, died early Tuesday afternoon in the Newkirk Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Chapel of Primghar, Iowa, with the Rev. Cory Flanagan, minister of the United Church of Primghar, officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Primghar. Born July 14, 1918 in Primghar, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur Peter and Sara Isoline (Bell) Anderson. He worked for the family business, Anderson Hatchery, in Primghar. Later he bought the business from his father and expanded to include a large hog and chicken feed business. He operated the business until his retirement. Survivors include one son, Robert James Anderson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Sharl Gwen Taylor, of Newkirk, and Sara Gail Boyd, of Naples, Fla.; one brother, Weston Anderson, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; one sister, Norene Elliott, of Rochester, Minn.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Louise (Beebe) Anderson; his parents; one brother, Lowell Anderson; and one sister, Nancy Anderson.
A memorial fund has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk, rebuilding fund. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468. Local arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Anna Mae Roseberry

Anna Mae Roseberry, 88, of Emporia, formerly of Oxford, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Mary Lucille (Lucy) Miller Neumann

Mary Lucille (Lucy) Miller Neumann, 91, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at her daughter Jane's home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, in Arkansas City, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of A Street and Walnut. She was born in Winfield, to Helen Belden Miller-Creasy and Orus Edward Miller. She was adopted in later life by Edna Wheatley. She lived her elementary school years in Gregory, S.D., but resided in Arkansas City, most of her life and in Ponca City, when her health deteriorated. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1934 and attended Arkansas City Junior College and Vanderbilt University. In 1943, Lucy married John Howard Neumann. They were the parents of three children, Nancy, Jane and John Jr. After Howard's death in 1962, she was the secretary at Trinity Episcopal Church full-time, until creating a monthly magazine and traveling statewide for the Kansas Food Dealer's Association. She also published a newspaper for the Jayhawk Food Dealers, of Topeka, and establisher her own firm, Jayhawk Publications, which she continued to operate until a few years before her death. In 2001, she published her book, "The Lust for Land," which detailed hundreds of stories about the settlement of South Central Kansas, during the land runs of 1889 and 1893. She had a long history with Arkalalah festivals, working and attending for 75 years, being named grand Marshall in 2004, and she was the proud mother of Arkalalah Queen Nancy in 1965, Queen's Court attendant Jane in 1966 and grandmother of Arkalalah Queen Amanda Mott in 1996. She was associated with the Arkansas City Daily Traveler for 13 years, as a reporter, society editor, correspondent for United Press and served as the first woman city editor until resigning to raise her family. She continued to write "The Chatter Box" weekly column, feature stories and filled in for the editor when needed. Her associations were varied, being the second president of the local Jaycee Jaynes, president of Frances Willard PTA, a local officer and regional board member and Camp Brookside director for Girl Scouts, served seven years on regional and national Boards of Directors for National Camp Fire Girls, a member of Fortnightly Club, local and state officer of Betty Bonney Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and served nationally as publisher of the DAR Convention Magazine, president of Junior Service League, president of the Cowley County Mental Health Association, officer in the G.A. EHU Unit, member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, promoter-volunteer worker for the Cherokee Strip Museum, member of the Kansas Authors Club, volunteer at Denton Art Center, member of Trinity Episcopal Church since 1940 and served as full-time and part-time secretary and altar guild. She enjoyed traveling all over the world and the United States. She was an avid tennis player until she was 86 years old, when triple by-pass surgery ended her playing years. She was a member of the Arkansas City Country Club, the Women's Golf Association and the local tennis leagues. She loved to read and worked a daily crossword puzzle. She spent many hours beading, embroidering, and china painting. She was also an avid bridge player, belonging to one of her bridge clubs for over 60 years. Her greatest accomplishment, according to her, was her life with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to be with them all. She also, always enjoyed and appreciated her friends. Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Mott and Jane Luetke, of Ponca City; and son, John Howard Neumann Jr., rural Isabel, Kan.; sons-in-law, Michael Mott, Dieter Luetke, Don Kerr and his sisters, Marnell, Sharnell and Gaynell; daughter-in-law, Patti Neumann; six granddaughters, Amanda Mott Thompson and husband, Wilburn, Ashley Mott, Kelby Kerr, Alyssa Neumann, Ashton Neumann and Avery Neumann; three great-granddaughters, Mersades Campbell, Mackinzy Campbell, Isabella Thompson; brother-in-law, Cort Emery; and nephew, Roger Emery; cousin, Bob McCormack and wife, Shirley. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; stepfather, E.V. Creasy; her adopted mother, Edna Wheatley; sister, Madeline Emery; and niece, Cheryl Emery.
A memorial has been established with Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 190, Ponca City, OK 74602, to be distributed to Trinity Episcopal Church in Arkansas City and Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City. Arrangements are under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home, Ponca City.

Harold E. Koch

Harold E. Koch, 81, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Mr. Steve Grimes will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Harold was born July 5, 1926, in Arkansas City, to Guy Koch and Esther Pearl (Johnson) Koch. He lived in Arkansas City his entire life. Harold was a master plumber, serving the public all of his working years. He was well known for his honesty, work ethic and random acts of kindness. Harold was an avid golfer and loved to be on the course with his two brothers. He loved the Navy and the ocean, serving during World War II. Harold was a yeoman on the supply ship, Virgo, in the Pacific. He spent both years of his service on the water until his honorable discharge in June 1946. Harold then met his wife to be, Jean Broyles, on a blind date arranged by her sister, Lucille. On Aug. 16, 1946, the couple were married in Arkansas City, and they had a daughter, Edwina. Retiring in 1988, Jean and Harold loved to travel the United States and spend time planting flowers in the yard. "Working together" was their motto. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Church of Christ in Arkansas City. Survivors include his wife, Jean Koch, of the home; daughter, Edwina Broadhead and husband, Don, of Wichita; grandson, Jeret L. Schisler and wife, Valery, of Wichita; two brothers, Alan Koch and wife, Lucille, and Loyd Koch and wife, Charlene, all of Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orin Koch, Richard Koch; and three sisters.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Dustin Ray Cook

Dustin Ray Cook, 29, of Geuda Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at the Via Christi Medical Center - St. Francis Campus in Wichita. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Gale Rider will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Dustin was born March 22, 1978, in Arkansas City, to James Darrel Cook and Debra Jean (Richards) Cook At the age of 3, Steve Dowler became a father to Dustin, following his marriage to Dustin's mother, Debra. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1996. On Dec. 19, 1998, he married Ame Elkins and the couple had a son, Gage. Dustin worked at Stellex Aerostructures in Wellington, Kan Pak and Creative Community Living. Survivors include his son, Gage Cook, of Hutchinson; parents, Steve and Debra Dowler, of Geuda Springs; brother, Nathan Cook and wife, Tricia, of Geuda Springs; grandparents, Dean and Bea Richards, of Geuda Springs, and Ruth Dowler, of Nashville, Tenn.; great-grandmother, Margaret Blevins, of Wichita. Dustin was preceded in death by grandparents, J.L. Dowler, Ivan D. Cook and Esther C. Johnson.
The Dustin Ray Cook Memorial Fund has been established. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Glen H. Martin Sr.

Glen H. Martin Sr., 84, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at the Bible Christian Church. The Rev. H. Dean LaVelle officiated. Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Glen was born April 22, 1923, in Wichita, to Archie G. and Arinda M. (Reed) Martin. He was reared and educated in Wichita. In March of 1943, Glen entered the Army. He served his country for three years as a wrecker operator and also served in WWII. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946. Before Glen went to the Army he married Dora Zoedean Bay on Feb. 12, 1943. The couple made their home in Wichita before moving to Arkansas City in 1967. Dora preceded Glen in death in March of 1987. He later married Bonnie Sanders Crow on June 14, 1987, in Arkansas City, where the couple made their home. Glen worked as a mechanic for KG&E for 30 years until his retirement. Glen was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of the Bible Christian Church where he volunteered many hours mowing the lawn and working on the new building. Glen also loved to build race engines, go to the car races, and spend time with his family at the lake. He had many friends. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of the home; one son, Glen H. Martin Jr. and his wife, Lynn, of Stillwater, Okla.; grandchildren, Regina Collins and her husband, Kevin, of Tulsa; Debra Gauger and her husband, Bryan, of Stillwater; Glen Martin III "Trey" and his wife, Tricia, of Arlington, Tenn.; Raechal Martin, of Wichita; Phillip Martin, of Winfield; stepdaughter-in-law, Vicki Crow, of Altoona, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dora; two sons, David Martin and John Martin; two sisters, Esther Bergeron; and Vera Harder; and one stepson, Keith Crow.
A memorial has been established with the Bible Christian Church Building Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Pauline Mae Goulden

Pauline Mae Goulden, 97, longtime Newkirk resident, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at the Newkirk Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, in the First Christian Church of Newkirk with the Rev. James Hollifield, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk, and the Rev. Kerney Graham Jr., officiating. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Born Sept. 18, 1910, near Blackwell, she was the daughter of Nathaniel "Nate" and Anna Rosetta (Suman) Shupe. In 1984 she moved into Newkirk where she has since resided. She, along with her husband, was involved with farming and ranching. For 14 years she was employed by the 106 school district as lunchroom manager and cook. She had served as superintendent of the Consolidated 106 Community Sunday School for over 20 years Survivors include two daughters, Beatrice Paul, of Enid, and Arlene Sellers, of Duncan, Okla.; one brother, Ralph Shupe, of Arkansas City; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Leslie, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Arthur, Robert, Albert, Orville and Melvin; and two sisters, Opal and Lucille.
A memorial fund has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk to help with rebuilding. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Shupe's name through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468. Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Arthur L. Booth

Arthur L. Booth, 71, Eustace, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at the Hospice of East Texas Home Place, Tyler, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow in Cambridge Cemetery. Born March 11, 1936, in Dexter, he was the son of Oran and Flora (Hankins) Booth. He worked in oil fields of west Texas and New Mexico. He worked for Chevron Oil Company in Monahans and Midland, Texas, Supron Oil Company in Dallas, Texas, Double Eagle Drilling Company in Dallas, as well as an independent consultant in Dallas. Survivors include his wife, Jo Alice Booth, Eustace, Texas; daughters, Kelly Booth of Malakoff, Texas, Jennifer Horn, of Kaufman, Texas, Keri Booth of Sanger, Texas; sister, Arlene Thompson, of Otis; brothers, Richard Booth, Clearwater; Jim Booth, New Strawn, Kan., and three grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of East Texas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Jack L. Wall

Jack L. Wall, 70, Sedan, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Sedan with the Rev. J. Dean McNamara officiating. Interment was in the Cedar Vale Cemetery. He was born Jan. 28, 1937, near Elgin, Kan., to Samuel Lewis Wall and Alice Marie (Niblack) Wall. He attended Elgin Elementary and graduated from Sedan High School. He served in the military with the United States Army. He lived most of his life in Chautauqua County. He worked several years for Cedar Vale Co-op Exchange and also for Chautauqua County for the Solid Waste Department. He was also a truck driver for Chautauqua County Road and Bridge. On Jan. 8, 1959, he married Nadine Seaman in Sedan. She survives of the home in Sedan. In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Billy Wall and wife, Debbie, of Cedar Vale, and Scott Wall, of Winfield; two grandsons, Matthew Wall, and his wife, Stefanie, of Springfield, Va., and Taggert Wall, of Winfield; one granddaughter, Charissa Wall, of Winfield; and one stepgranddaughter, Chantiel Barron, of Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home, the First Baptist Church of Sedan or Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, Sedan.

Mary Lucille Neumann

Mary Lucille Neumann, 91, former longtime Arkansas City resident and recent Ponca City resident, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2007, in Ponca City.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home, Ponca City.

Martha E. Walker

Martha E. Walker, 95, Winfield, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Cumbernauld Village.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the First Christian Church in Winfield. Arrangements were under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Winfield.

Aaron Mark Eiden

Aaron Mark Eiden, 2-year--old son of Matt and Beth Eiden, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident on Sunday, Dec. 31. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Richard Arndt officiated. Interment was in the Lake Fremont Cemetery at Dunnell, Minn., at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Aaron was born July 14, 2004, in Cherokee, Iowa, to Matthew and Beth Rickords Eiden. He was baptized on Aug. 22, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Survivors include his parents, Matt and Beth Eiden, of Cherokee, Iowa; his three brothers, Noah, Caleb and Elijah Eiden, of the home; his grandparents, Dennis and Jean Rickords, of Copan, Okla., Peter and Karen Eiden, of Omaha, Neb.; great-grandparents, Lindel and Mildred Rickords, of Arkansas City, and Martin and Lois Ziemer of Dunnell, Minn., William Casey of Eugene, Ore; many aunts and uncles and cousins.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa.

J.R. Morgan

J.R. Morgan, 68, of Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at his home. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Highland Cemetery with the Rev. John Horton officiating. Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, is in charge of arrangements. He was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Jay, Okla., to Archie F. and Alta M. (Lackey) Morgan. He joined the Navy in 1959 and was discharged in 1962. Mr. Morgan was a self-employed painter, real-estate investor, and especially enjoyed renovating his properties. He owned and managed Kings Point Fishing Resort from 1977 until 1981. He was a member of both the local VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his son, Justin R. Morgan and wife, Michelle, of Arkansas City; brothers, Billy Joe Morgan and wife, Eula, and Marvin Morgan; sister, Treva Harrod and husband, Rod; granddaughter, Haley Morgan; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Artherton.

James M. (Jim) Miller

James M. (Jim) Miller, 71, Arkansas City resident, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Ponca City Medical Center.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home and Crematory, Ponca City.

James W. Barker

James W. Barker, 73, Arkansas City, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, in the Maple City Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. James was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Maple City to Walter W. and Lodema G. (Bradley) Barker. He was reared and educated in Maple City, then Parker Country School, and then graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1951. He joined the United States Air Force in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He stayed in the USAF Reserves until 1963. He married Josephine Brooks, they had three children and were then divorced in 1983. He later married Wanda (Ball) Swopes and gained three more children from Wanda's first marriage. James was in sales most of his life and retired as a bread route salesman in 1985. He and Wanda traveled about for 10 years working on and off in the resort industry. They moved back to Arkansas City in 1995, where they have lived since. James was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 VFW and the Shelton Beatty Post 18 American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home; a daughter, Dawn and her husband, David Baired, of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Collin, of Arkansas City, and Blane, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepsons, Monte and his wife, Tresh Swopes, of Arkansas City, and Darren and his wife, Kim Swopes of Newkirk, Okla.; a sister, Kathy Osburn, of Newkirk; five grandsons, Justin and his wife, Jennifer Decker, Jason and James Decker, Josh Baired, and Garrett Swopes; four granddaughters, Tori Anstine, Amanda Swopes, Brittany Swopes and Kelsey Baired. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a stepdaughter, Tammie Swopes.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
