CAROL A. KIRTLEY died October 22, 2011 at Mercy Health Center College Ave, Manhattan, KS at the age of 88. Carol was born on February 23, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the daughter of Albert and Myrtle (Myklebust) Hibbard.
Carol was raised in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area, graduating from Washburn High School. She attended Augsburg College, Hamlin University and then attended Asbury Nursing School. Carol married
Rev. Frank Kirtley on June 25, 1943 and he preceded her in death on March 2, 1992. The couple served Methodist Churches in Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Kansas before retiring and moving to Clay Center in 1988.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center, Kansas.
Officiating the service will be Pastor Larry Myers.
Graveside services will be at 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26, 2011 the Lowry City Cemetery, Lowry City, MO.
Visitation will be held on will be held fro 3-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home and the family will greet friends from 5-6 PM.
Memorials can be made to may be made to the Clay Center United Methodist Church and can be sent in care of the funeral home.
Harold Worley
(Died October 25, 2011)
HAROLD WORLEY died October 25, 2011 at Medicalodge, Clay Center, KS at the age of 86. He was born on May 30, 1925 in Clay County, KS the son of Joseph and Florence (Heuson) Worley. Harold was raised and lived in the Clay Center area his entire life. He worked as a Ford auto mechanic for many years. Harold is preceded in death by 2 sisters, 3 brothers and his long time companion, Gertrude Cowing.

Leon Colp

LEON CHARLES COLP died 110611 at Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center, KS at the age of 74. He was born on May 7, 1937 in Albuquerque, NM the son of Amel and Mary (Hazen) Colp. Leon was raised in Clay Center and graduated from CCCHS in 1955. He married
Donna Koerner on July 3, 1963. He worked for Sears & Roebuck, COOP and drove a truck for Girton Propane until his retirement in 2002. He is preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Hadway and a sister, Irene Lenhart.

Michael Wernette

CHARLES MICHAEL WERNETTE, 61 died November 8, 2011 at the Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center, KS. He was born on September 23, 1950, the son of Charles F. and Vera (Gibbs) Wernette. Mike graduated from Clay Center Community High School, and earned a B.S. in Political Science-Pre Law at Washburn University. After graduation, Mike was appointed as Assistant Director of Admissions on the staff of Benedictine College. In 1977, Mike started his business 'American Sealants' Company, which he successfully built and expanded over the years. Mike was proud of his business and emphasized, here is a non-agriculture business, that did not have a start-up grant, that exports across Kansas, nationally, and internationally; the Company did not ask for any tax breaks nor economic grants. The company's tire sealant product has become increasingly popular in both the domestic and overseas' markets including China, Belgium, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, Brazil and South Africa among other countries. The 'American Sealants' Company will observe its' 34th year of operation in December, 2011. Mike thoroughly enjoyed his business, business colleagues, and was a we-respected businessman. The 'Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development' at Kansas State University, honored Mike with their Leader of the Year award for entrepreneurship, in March 2000. Mike was presented with the Economic Development Achievement award, in May 2000, spot-lighting outstanding achievement by an area business. Mike absolutely loved the outdoor life - camping, hunting, boating and fishing with family and friends. In his youth, Mike participated in little league baseball, Cub Scouts, Junior Golf, High School basketball and cross-country. Mike was always interested in politics and thoroughly enjoyed an engaging political discussion; he was involved in local and national politics his entire life. He found great relaxation in helping his Dad and family in the orchard and vegetable gardening. Mike enjoyed traveling the globe for his business, watching old western and classic movies, and the memorable jazz and blues music of the all time greatest artists. Mike realized great pleasures in the simple things of life. Mike was an active member of St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church throughout is life, from serving as an altar boy, to participating on the Church Council. He was always available if someone needed a hand, a shoulder, a loan, or a fund raiser. Mike was a unique provider; examples include supporting a Social, sponsoring little league baseball, supporting children's education at the St. Joseph Indian School. The Good Shepherd Hospice House, Boys Town, UNICEF, USO, Flint Hills Christian School at Green, Light House for Christ and the Catholic Community. Mike is survived by his parents Charles and Vera Wernette of Clay Center; his sisters, Monica Wernette of Manhattan and Jean Wernette of Wichita; his brother Jon and wife Darlene of Clay Center; nieces Cathi Girton, Carla Crutcher both of Clay Center, Carrie Roeser of Riley, Cyndi Tuschinski of Newark, Delaware, Chris Nolte of Wamego and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and great nephews and friends across the world. Mike is preceded by his youngest brother Guy Kevin; his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Minnie Gibbs; his paternal grandparents, Jon and Mary Wernette; his uncles Gene, John, Glenn, Larry, Earl, and Bob; his aunts Florence Sissy, Lois, Lucy, Annie, Dorothy and Verna. His family will remember Mike each and every day. Mike was the best brother, son, uncle and friend. Mike will always be remember for his generosity, great sense of humor and his selflessness. He is loved and he is already missed. Mike never had a bad word to say, and he never complained...even at the end of his life, confused by stroke complications, Mike wouldn't accept your help or your assistance without whispering a very heartfelt thank you. And we too, “thank you, Mike”.

Edwin Butterfield

Edwin L. Butterfield, 93, Clay Center, KS passed away on November 7, 2011 at the Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center. He was born to Bernard and Lila (Walker) Butterfield on December 29, 1917 on the family farm north of Overbrook, KS. He was graduated from Overbrook Rural High School in 1936 and from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia in 1940. He was a teacher in the high schools of Tonganoxie, Burlington, and Junction City and an administrator in the schools of Herington and Clay Center, retiring in 1983 after 40 years of service. Ed served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked in Naval recruitment in Philadelphia, PA, and was then assigned to the submarine tender, Clytie, in the Pacific theatre and was stationed in Perth, Australia. On September 2, 1944, he was married
to Ruth Ruhlen in Philadelphia, PA. She survives of the home. Ed is also survived by four children: Edwin, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Portland, OR; Ann Burkett and husband Joe of Fort Collins, CO; Susan Butterfield and partner Diana, of Lawrence, KS; and Bradley and wife Lori of Centennial, CO. Survivors also include seven grandchildren – Todd Butterfield, Jason, Nicholas and Brea Burkett, and Bradley, Jenna and Austin Butterfield; five great grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Brown of Overbrook, and one brother, Marion (Sam) Butterfield of Hutchinson, KS. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Clara Arlene, and brothers Harold, Duane, and Lloyd. Ed was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Clerk of the Session for many years. He had been a member of the Herington and Clay Center Rotary Clubs where he had achieved 35 years of perfect attendance. He and Ruth chaired the Clay Center Red Cross Bloodmobile program for nearly 30 years. Ed served as the chair of the Clay County Republican Party for many years.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 10th from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Clay Center at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11th, with graveside services to follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Overbrook, KS cemetery, Overbrook, KS.
Memorials can be made to the Edwin L. Butterfield Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, to be designated at a later date.
Bonnie Gibbs Steffen
(October 16, 1922 - November 8, 2011)
BONNIE GIBBS-STEFFEN died November 8, 2011 at Clay County Medical Center, Clay Center, KS at the age of 89. Bonnie was born on October 6, 1922 in Industry, Kansas the daughter of Jacob and Priscilla (Nuss) Gibbs.
Bonnie grew up in the Industry, Kansas area and attended school in Industry. She worked at Gibbs Groceries in Industry and farmed in the Industry area most of her life before moving to Clay Center in 2005. She married
Ivan Steffen on September 7, 1971 and he preceded her on November 28, 2000. She was a member of the Bethany Church in Dickinson County, Kansas. She is also preceded by 3 brothers, 1 sister and 1 son-in-law.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 1:30 PM at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Chapel in Clay Center, Kansas.
Officiating the service will be Pastor Cheryl Mickey and Pastor Ken Stout.
Burial will be at the Greenridge Cemetery, Dickinson County, Kansas.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 3-8pm with family greeting friends from 3:30-5pm at the funeral home.

Nola Logan

ALICE NOLA LOGAN died November 10, 2011 at Medicalodge, Clay Center, KS at the age of 90. She was born on September 23, 1921 in Clay Center Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Auchard) Nyberg.
Nola was raised in Clay Center and graduated from CCCHS in 1939. She attended Huff's Business College. Nola married
William Bill Logan on October 16, 1943 in LaJolla, CA. She worked for several banks in Missouri and California before they returned to Clay Center. Bill preceded her in death on May 19, 2009. Nola was a member of the United Methodist Church, Coleen's, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary and Lioness Club.
