Oran Sullivan
Oran L. Sullivan, age 76, retired Sullivan & Associates Tax Service accountant, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014. Service was at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 25, at First Baptist Church. Committal service was 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven-Sunset Memorial Park in Ponca City, Okla.
Oran was born and raised in the Tulsa area. He graduated from Tulsa Central High in 1955. He was a member of Kansas Gas & Oil Organization. Oran served in the military, both in the Army Reserves and as a Marine until he retired from the military in the early 1990s.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Pansy (Millsaps) Sullivan; and brother and sister-in-law, Barney and Greta Sullivan. Survivors include his wife, Normae; children, Rebecca Sullivan of Charlotte, N.C., Patrick Sullivan of Fredonia, Jennifer (Brandon) Gurley of Charlotte, N.C., Kellie (Jeffrey) Hand of Moore, Okla., Mark (Samarn) Stephenson of Stafford, Va., and Chris (Brenda) Stephenson of Ponca City; grandchildren, Matthew Sullivan, Nicole and Rachel Gurley, Allen and Faith Hand, Charles Stephenson, Windyl, and Mary Butler, and Arnnop Sangapol; and four great-grandchildren.

Calvin Zerener
Calvin G. Zerener, 78, of Conway Springs, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs. where he had been a resident since March 17, 2014.
He was born April 26, 1935, on a farm northwest of Conway Springs, to Emil Herman Carl Zerener and Marie Anna (Uppendahl) Zerener. Calvin moved with his family in 1947 to the Zerener farm southwest of Conway Springs at the age of 12. He grew up in the Conway Springs community and attended Conway Springs public schools. He graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1953 and began working at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita.
Calvin enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 in order to beat the draft. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
Following his discharge, Calvin began farming with his dad and working at the Wichita Stockyard. While employed at the stockyard, a co-worker introduced Calvin to Betty Ann (Meador) Doll, who worked in the business office. The couple was united in marriage on Feb. 12, 1965. They and Betty’s son, Mark, made their first home on 12th Street in Conway Springs. In 1966, they moved back to the Zerener farm, where they raised their children and it was home to Calvin until his death.
In addition to farming, Calvin drove a school bus for USD #356 Conway Springs for 31 years, retiring in May 2000.
Calvin was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, Argonia. He attended and was active in the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs, where he was a committeeman and had served the church in many capacities. Calvin was past member of the Conway Springs Arena Club, was a past USD #356 Board of Education member and served many years on the Springdale Township Board.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Fisher.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Julie Vancuren and husband Chris of Conway Springs; Susan Floyd and husband Mike of Kingman; his stepson, Mark Doll of Eugene, Ore.; two brothers, Kent Wendell Zerener of Cheney; and John Zerener of Winfield; one sister, Kathleen Zerener of Creede, Colo.; five grandchildren; Clinton, Brent, Brian, Kristen and Brant; and a number of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs, with the Rev. Michael W. Roberts officiating. Interment was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Conway Springs. Arrangements were by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs.
Memorials have been established to the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs Friendship Meals or the Spring Hill cemetery Memorial Fund.
Gilvin Walker
Gilvin Lee Walker, 78, retired service station owner, passed away March 6, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born on Dec. 22, 1935, to Harold and Thelma Walker in Alva, Okla. Soon after Gilvin’s birth, Thelma passed away and Gilvin was welcomed into his grandparent’s home to live until the age of two when Harold married
his second wife, Reba. Harold and Reba raised Gilvin together along with their children Howard, Ruth and Cecil.
Gilvin attended school in Oklahoma before moving to Kansas and graduating from Milton High School in 1953. He attended Friends University for one semester before entering the military. He served proudly in the Navy before his honorable discharge in 1959.
In 1956, while home on leave from the Navy, Gilvin’s sister, Ruth, brought her friend Karen home after church. Karen noticed the handsome sailor in his uniform and obliged him with a date soon after. Gilvin proposed to Karen at Christmas time the following year and the two were married
in 1958. Karen was the love of his life, the apple of his eye, and his sweetheart through all the highs and lows of their lives. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Gilvin’s purpose in life was to make Karen, who he nicknamed “Twinkles,” happy.
The couple was blessed with four children – Debby, Brenda, Steve and Cate who they raised in Argonia. Gilvin was a hard-working man who spent many years as the owner of the Texaco filling station in Argonia. He was well known to the many farmers in the area for his ability to “bust tractor tires” and repair them quickly. He taught his son, Steve, the trade and even as a young boy, Steve was working side by side with his dad.
Gilvin took great pride in providing for his family. Even in the lean times, two things were very important to him…summer vacations and Christmas. There were many memories made in the mountains of Colorado and on other trips, the six of them packed in the car towing their Cameo camper. And Christmas mornings at the Walker house were full of joy. Somehow there were always piles of presents under the tree for the four kids, even when money was tight.
Gilvin was a man of many interests and hobbies. At Argonia High School, Gilvin drove a school bus, ran the clock and scoreboard at the high school basketball games and even served on the school board. He had an impressive collection of barbed wire, taught himself photography and even set up his own darkroom in the family’s bathroom. He sang bass in the Wichita barbershop chorus and enjoyed having his son join him in singing.
In 1980, Gilvin took over the Standard filling station in Harper and moved the family to their current home. He and Steve again worked side by side and the Walkers became established members of the community. Gilvin became quite well known for the pool parties in his backyard. Friends enjoyed them immensely but nobody enjoyed them more than Gilvin. He also loved having his family and especially his grandchildren come and enjoy the pool. Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends were spent at Walker’s pool and often there were so many people that swimming became secondary to the fun of just being together.
In later years, Gilvin became extremely interested in his family’s genealogy picking up where his own father had left off in researching the roots of the Walker family. He also was a keen Civil War and history buff and spent many hours reading, learning and researching. That love of history led him to become active with the Harper County Genealogical and Historical Society. Gilvin also loved music and in particular, bluegrass. One of his favorite things to do was travel with Karen to Jerusalem Ridge in Rozine, Ky., to enjoy the bluegrass festival there. His friend, Lonnie, shared his love of this music. He and his wife, Arley, made this trip with Gilvin and Karen more than once. Gilvin was also a sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their activities as well as watching football, basketball, Nascar and golf on television. He and Karen enjoyed golfing together in their retirement.
Gilvin also had a great love for dogs and the family was never without at least one four-legged member. In recent years, he became partial to basset hounds. His beloved basset, Otis, was his faithful friend and is now entrusted to be Karen’s companion.
Gilvin was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Thelma; step-mother, Reba Walker; sisters-in-law, Patty Walker and Marilyn Walker; and brother-in-law Melvin Pohlenz.
Gilvin’s legacy is in how he taught by example the value of a hard day’s work, being a man of his word, and being loyal to those he loved until the end. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Karen of the home; son, Steve Walker and his wife Tami of Anthony; daughters, Debby McElroy and husband Joe of Wichita, Brenda Bratt and her husband Jim of Wichita, and Cate (Cathy) Eighmey and her husband Curt of Olathe, Kan. He also is survived by his brothers, Howard Walker and his wife Jenny of Shawnee, Kan., and Cecil Walker of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Ruth Achelpohl and her husband Clark of Kansas City, Mo; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church in Harper, with Pastor Alan Stuckey and Mr. Ben Staley officiating. Recorded music played was “His Promised Land” by Rhonda Vincent; the congregation sang “Amazing Grace,” and Dick and Diana Busby sang “How Great Thou Art” accompanied by Karen Aldis on the organ. Casket bearers were Tevin Walker, Tanor Walker, J.J. Bratt, Taylor Armstrong, Andy Curtis, and Rob Heatherington. Military honors were provided by the United States Naval Honors Team. Cremation is taking place and a private family graveside will take place at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Harper Mission Mart in Gilvin’s name and sent in care of the funeral home.

Kathleen Courtney
Kathleen C. Courtney of Haysville, 72, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014. She was born June 11, 1941 to William and Ruby Alice (Honaker) Courtney in Wichita. Kathleen retired from Bartlett Grain and had a zest for life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Clevenger; and brothers-in-law, Loren Clevenger and Ronald Sigwing. Kathleen is survived by her sister, Mary Sigwing of Cheney; honorary-sister, Kathleen Sutherland of Wichita; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. Thursday at Smith Mortuary, 7031 S. Broadway St., Haysville. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 20, and funeral at 10 a.m., Friday, March 21, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 1912 W. Grand Ave., Haysville. Interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Pete Genemaras
Pete N. Genemaras, former resident of Conway Springs, passed away on Jan. 4, 2014, at his home in San Bernardino, Calif., with his loving family by his side.
Pete was born Jan. 11, 1922, and graduated from Conway Springs High School in 1938 with his brother, Bill. Pete served in the U.S. Navy and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 6, 1940.
He is survived by his wife, Ramona; his son, Nick Genegaras of California; his daughter, Cynthia Neamy of San Bernardino; his sister, Mary, of California; his brother, Allen G. Darnel (Chauncey Genemaras) of Kentucky; and many grandchildren.
Pete was preceded in death by his brother, Bill, and his sister, Pauline.
Bernice Davis
Bernice Pauline Davis entered heaven on Feb. 22, 2014 at the age of 85. Born March 21, 1928 in Garden City, Kan., Pauline was raised on a farm near Pierceville, Kan., and graduated from Pierceville High School.
She was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Sherman Horton and Ethel Mae (Bishop) Horton, and husband William H. Davis, Jr.; sisters, Jessie Lightner, Claradella Widows, both of Garden City; brothers, Robert Lee Horton and Joe Horton.
Survivors include her brother, Harvey (Emma) Horton, of Kendall, Kan.; three sons, William Lee (Cheryl) Davis of Goddard, Dave (Shelly) Davis of Lawrence and Tim (Maria) Davis of Plano, Texas.
Pauline Davis was the proud grandmother to Brian Davis, Melissa Davis, Greg Davis, Miranda Davis, Ian Davis and Max Davis. She also was the very proud great-grandmother to Colton Davis, Case Davis and Kinsley Davis. There are also many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends the family wishes to express their thanks to.
The service was at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26 at the Goddard United Methodist Church. A noon lunch at the church preceded the service. Burial was at the Goddard Cemetery.

Joann Williams
Joann I. Williams, age 82, died Monday, March 10, 2014. Visitation was 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater. Rosary was at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, with funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 13, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Haysville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dave Williams; parents, Ivan and Mary Dennis; and brother, John Clifton. She is survived by her children, Rita Thompson, Dave (Betty) Williams, and Nina Williams, all of Haysville, and Phillip (Kelly) Williams of Wichita; brother-in-law, Robert Williams of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Henry Homer
Henry W. Homer, 95, retired oil production superintendent after 33 years working for Maurice L. Brown Oil, Co., went to be with the Lord on Feb. 27, 2014. Born April 23, 1918, he was raised on a farm in Greenwood County.
In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and entered WWII. As a member of the 8th Army Air Force, 97th Bomb Group, 341 Squadron, he survived the crash of his B-17 and seven other aircraft on the icecap of Greenland. Following his rescue and return to the states, he was assigned to the 13th Air Force, 14th Airdrome Squadron and fought in the Pacific Theater.
He was among the armed forces that conducted battle campaigns in New Guinea, the Northern Solomon Islands and Bismarck Archipelago. Before being discharged in October of 1945, he was injured and received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Middle Eastern Medal and the American Service Medal.
He married
Marie Elizabeth Staples of Presque Isle, Maine on Sept. 18, 1942 and for 41 years following the end of the war, they made their home in Cheney.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Bessie (Condit) Henry; sister, Treva (Kenneth) Tharp; sister, Juva (Wayne) Chamberlain. Survivors include his wife, Marie; sons, Don (Karla) Henry and Steve (Lana) Henry; grandchildren, Matthew (Genevieve) Henry, Katherine (Scott) Wilson, Meredith (Michael) DiPasquale, Lindsay (Andrew) Yockey, Micah (Sharon) Henry and Andrew Henry along with seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Sunday, March 2 at Wulf-Ast Mortuary. Funeral service was Monday, March 3, at Trinity United Christian Church, Cheney. Memorial contributions may be sent to Trinity United Christian Church in Cheney.
Sandra Rink
Sandra Sue (Stuart) Rink, age 63, homemaker, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28 at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary in Clearwater.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Stuart and Anita (Wentworth) Metzger. She is survived by her sons, Travis (Jill) Rink of Goddard, Brad (Trish) Rink of Viola; grandchildren, Nathon Miller, Madolynn Rink, Ethan Rink, Gabrielle Rink, Reagan Rink, and Brooke Rink; sister, Wendy Layton of Clearwater; brother, Craig Stuart of Wichita; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stuart of Wichita.

Jim Frischenmeyer
James D. “Jim” Frischenmeyer of Clearwater, age 60, former Boeing manager and Lean Management consultant, died Thursday, November 13, 2014. Service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary. Interment was at Clearwater Cemetery.
He was preceded by parents, Anthony and Mary (Cooke) Frischenmeyer, and siblings Rosalie Bressler, Tony, Steve, and Bob Frischenmeyer, and Trudy Davis. Survivors include his siblings, Ronald (Diana) Frischenmeyer of Wichita, Theresa (Harold) Huff of Anson, Carl Frischenmeyer of Hutchinson, Michael Frischenmeyer of Wichita, Maureen (Dan) Kile of Clearwater, Roger (Jackie) Frischenmeyer of Clearwater, Betty (Ron) Callaway of Wichita, and Pauline (Sherri) Frischenmeyer of Clearwater.
