Ruby LaVon Fishback
It is with great sorrow that I announce the death of my mother, Ruby LaVon Fishback, on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2013, at 10:35 a.m., at St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., but it is with joy that I celebrate her life and the love and light that she brought to me (her daughter) and her friends.
Thanks to the Internet and a stray memory, I found my mom’s birthplace from the 1940 Census. She was 3 years old at the time, having been born on Jan. 21, 1937, at Dennis, in Osage Township, Labette, Kan.
Mom did not have an easy life during her growing up years but you would never know it. She always said that she never felt like she accomplished a lot in her life, but I think she just had no idea the lives that she touched. While this is not unusual as many of us have no idea the joy and support we bring to others, this week has made me aware more than ever the many, many people who remember her fondly and what a neat lady she was.
When my stepfather, James, was alive, those two made quite a pair. I am sure that many of you in Argonia can tell some tales. Mom always worked hard and put in 100 percent to anything that she did.
She took her life jobs seriously while she lived in Argonia. She drove the school bus for over 20 years. She worked at “Bob and Johns” for quite a few years, and she made a lot of people happy doing short order cooking at the café.
I know that a lot of you missed her when she came to live with me in 1999. I know that Mom really missed Argonia. Mom and I had a lot of amazing times together as we crossed the country three times in moves with U-Haul over the years but Argonia was always home.
Mom was till looking out for me and taking care of me up until the day that she passed away. That was just the way Mom was. She always maintained her connections to Argonia and loved the town and all of you.
Thank you all for being such good friends and a family for my mom. I know she appreciated and cherished all of you.
Sincerely,
Kandi Hudson, a grateful daughter to have her for 57 years. I will love her forever.
