She was soon joined by two sisters, Leanna Loy (Waln) Harrison now of Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Verla Jane (Waln) Saunders now of Simpsonville, S.C. Clarene attended the country school in Canton along with many cousins, prior to the family moving to McPherson where she attended and graduated High School in 1945. While attending a USO dance at the Smokey Hill Air Force Base, she met her future husband – Carlton F. “Joe” Weaver who hailed from Baltimore, Md. The couple was married
at the First Christian Church of McPherson on Sept. 26, 1948 (exactly 2 years from the date they first met). This year, they were happy to celebrate a rare 65 years of marriage.
After the wedding, Clarene and Joe lived in Baltimore for a few years where their first child was born, daughter, A. Denise (Weaver) Morehead. In May of 1950, Joe graduated from the Maryland Art Institute and the couple headed back to Kansas where Joe found good work and Clarene was closer to her family. Throughout the next several years, a few more children were born: son, Jon Carlton Weaver; son, Leonard Ross Weaver; and daughter, Katherine E. “Kit” (Weaver) Slater. Clarene was active in the kids’ schools, scouting, church, and the ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha) Sorority which she had previously joined in 1946.
In 1972, Clarene and Joe moved to Clearwater when they purchased the Clearwater Greens Golf Course along with daughter Denise and son-in-law, Gary Morehead. Clarene and her family worked long, hard hours at this business and took great joy in watching it grow over the years. She enjoyed golfing, bridge, and spending time with her growing family – both her immediate family swelling to nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, as well as with the many customers that had become good family friends.
Clarene began another adventure when she and Joe “retired” from the golf course in 1987 and began traveling extensively.
