A celebration was held at West Side Christian Church, Friday, March 25, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to The Lord’s Diner or Fellowship Class at Westside Christian Church.
Ray grew up on a farm six miles northwest of Emporia. He was born to Will and Ovoilette Phillips on Dec. 7, 1920.
He was the oldest of seven – four girls and three boys. When he was six years old, he was riding on the hay buck with his grandpa when they were sticking hay and broke his leg, so he didn’t start school until he was seven. The Phillips kids, as they each got old enough, walked the half-mile to the country school they attended through the eighth grade. Ray was his dad’s “right hand man” as he grew, especially running the thrashing machine, filling silos, and helping milk the cows, and when he was in high school he delivered the milk to a dairy on his way to school. The country kids that drove to high school kind of banded together and Ray became best friends with Johnnie Brown, who had a sister, Ruth Joy. The three of them graduated from Emporia High School in 1939.
Ray went on to learn welding and worked in a hardware store. Ray and Ruth Joy were married
on a rainy Easter Sunday at the minister’s house with their parents with them on April 13, 1941.
On Dec. 7, 1941, Ray’s 21st birthday, Pearl Harbor was bombed. It was Feb. 23, 1942, when Ray left on the train for Ft. Leavenworth and the Army, leaving behind Ruth and their 10-day-old baby son, Roy Richard. and our families. Ray was assigned to the 149th Engineers Special Brigade. They went to Mississippi for five months of basic training, then to Fort Pierce, Fla., for amphibious training. From there ,they went up the coast to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, and sailed for England on Dec. 23, 1943. One of his most memorable times that he has talked about was the North Atlantic storm they went through on their way to England. There was a complete blackout in England.
The 149th lived in private homes and continued training leading up to the D-Day Invasion of Europe in Normandy, France, on June 5, 1944. The combat engineers were let off of landing craft to make their way on to Omaha Beach on that historic day. He was transferred to the 6th Engineers Special Brigade, sent back to England, then to the states, where he arrived in January of 1945. He was given 30 days to go by train from New York to Fort Lewis, Washington, for the South Pacific in February. He was on the ship for 45 days. Then they got off the ship into the invasion of Okinawa in mid-April. After Japan surrendered in August, he did Occupation Duty in Inchon Korea until he sailed for the states. He received his discharge from the Army in December 1945 in Fort Logan, Colorado. After seeing much of the world, he came home without a scratch.
After a few weeks at home in Wichita he was offered a job at Screw Machine Products. He was associated with this company for the next 45 years. Along the way we built a house. This was a family project including the five kids. The house was barely livable when the family moved into it on Nov. 1, 1957. With Ray’s abilities it progressed into a very nice house that has been well lived in for 54 years.
In retirement, Ray and Ruth got to do some traveling, mostly by car and some with the travel trailer. Then Ray spent several years recycling. He went to Lake Afton every Monday morning, gathering the cans and whatever else he found that he could use or give away. It was a sad day when he could no longer gather cans or work in his garage.
