Dixie Ray Kalivoda
Dixie Ray Kalivoda passed away June 18, 2001, at age 61, after battling a brain tumor for seven years.
Born November 2, 1939 in Milan, Kansas, she is survived by her husband of 27 years, Grant Kalivoda; her son, Nicholas Kalivoda; sister, Billie June Whaley of Perth, Kansas; brother, Max Ray of Gallup, N.M.; sister, Joyce Jones of Cheney, Kansas; brother, Roger Ray of Milan, Kansas; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Dixie graduated from Milan High School in 1956, attending one year of college at Southwestern in Winfield, Kansas going on to graduate and getting a Masters Degree from Kansas University. She then joined the Peace Corps where she taught at a teacher training college in Malawi, Africa, after which she traveled in the Middle East and India for a year. Upon returning to the U.S., she taught art in Gary, IN, for three years before traveling with her husband through Mexico and Central America for two years.
She returned to teach in Gary, IN for another year before going to teach in Thermopolis, WY. She moved to Santa Fe in 1975 and started teaching in the Santa Fe Public Schools shortly thereafter. Before she retired due to her illness in 2000 she had taught in the Enrichment Program at E.J. Martinez Elmentary for 15 years. During that time she was instrumental in getting students involved with an international creative problem solving competition called Odessey of the Mind (now called Destination Imagination.) Students from this program have gone on to numerous state competitions, and a team containing a number of her former students, won a world championship a few years ago.
Memorial services were held in the courtyard of E.J. Martinez Elementary School on Thursday, June 28, 2001 and again at the Milan cemetery July 8, 2001.
Betty L. (Means) Otten
Betty L. (Means) Otten, retired City of Wichita account clerk, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001.
Visitation with family was 7-9 p.m. on Friday, July 13 at Resthaven Mortuary. Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14 at Goddard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Bill H. II and Charlotte Otten, Derby; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Jon Milliken, Houston, Toni and Bill Wenger, Goddard; brothers, Charles Means, Wichita, Bob Means, Goddard; sisters, Naomi Jo Hanchett, Dorothy Tyson, Dolly Poteet, all of Wichita, Sue Henderson, Goddard; 5 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.
Memorials established with American Lung Association of Kansas and Goddard United Methodist Church.
Fonzy Robertson
Fonzy L. Robertson, Sr., 74, of Viola, retired Boeing employee, died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs, Kansas.
Services were Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church, Conway Springs with Pastor Roger Charles of the First Baptist Church, Peabody, officiating. Interment will be in Viola Cemetery.
Survivors include wife, Sally Robertson of the home; two sons, Fonzy Robertson, Jr. and David Robertson; three daughters Diana Robertson, Jeanie Patterson and Tina Welch, all of Viola; one brother, Mack Robertson of Jones Mill, Arkansas; three sisters, Bob Ruth Gueinwich of Little Rock, Eloise Chandler and Tommie Jean Cooper, both of Glenrose, Arkansas; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial is with the First Baptist Church Building Fund, Viola, Kansas. Arrangements by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs.
Larry Grinsell
Larry Grinsell, 43, of Lakewood, Calif., passed away August 20, 2001. He is survived by his loving family; daughters, Charlene Marie of Cheney, Jamie Lee of Cheney, Jessica Rose of Everett, Wa.; mother, Mrs. Jamie Grinsell of Lakewood, Calif.; sisters, Laura Grinsell and Kathleena Fallington. Services were held on Saturday, September 1, 2001 in Long Beach, Calif.
Kevin Beach
Kevin Wayne Beach, 47, a construction worker, died April 16, 2006 in Seattle, Wash. He was born November 5, 1958 in Long Beach, Calif. Survivors include father, Bud Beach of Seattle, Wash, mother, Beverly Reavis of Woodward, Okla., son Joshua Beach of Tacoma, Wash, and brother, Mark Beach of Linnwood, Wash.
A graveside service was held Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Pioneer cemetery in Cheney, officiated by Rev. Kenton Van. Interment was at Pioneer Cemetery. Memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Twilla Cook
Twilla G. (Black) Cook, 87, homemaker, passed away April 22, 2006 at Kingman, Kan. She was born August 25, 1918, in Cheney, Kan., the daughter of Elmo Black and Elsie Cater Black. On July 26, 1934, she was united in marriage to Henry Cook in Viola, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Cook, brother, Chester Black and grandson, Kevin Beach. Survivors include sons Charles Cook of Kingman, Melvin Cook of Liberal, Raymond Cook of Midland, Texas; daughters Beverly Reavis of Woodward, Okla., Debra Avila of Kingman, 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
Graveside service was held April 25, 2006 at Pioneer Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Karen Ault. Interment was at Pioneer cemetery in Cheney. Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain, was in charge of arrangements.
Joan Kanarr
Joan H. (Harding) Kannarr, retired college professor, of San Diego, Calif., died April 22, 2006, in La Jolla, Calif. She was born October 1933 in Cheney. A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. May 2 at Point Loma United Methodist Church in San Diego.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Goldie (True) & M.C. Harding, and sister Maxine Harding. She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Galen and Beryl Kannarr of Texas, and Tracy Kannarr of California; daughter Tina Kannarr of California; sisters Betty Jean Robinson of Perham, Minn., and Darlene Hanson of Annapolis, Md.; brother Richard Harding of Cheney, Kan.; and grandchildren Alisha and Travis Kannarr of Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Point Loma United Methodist Church, Kansas State University, or The Guatemala Project, P.O. Box 953, National City, CA 91951-0953.
Mamie Cherokee Staats
Mamie Cherokee Staats of Wichita, 86, retired USD 259 teacher, died April 23, 2006. She was born Jan. 16, 1920 in Afton, Okla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Resthaven Chapel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilford and Pansy Carver; husband Lewis A. Staats, Sr.; brother Buster Carver’ and sister Juanita Cottam.
She is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Allen and Cheryl Staats of Clearwater, and Craig Staats of Goddard; daughter and son-in-law Cheryle and David Olson of Wichita; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
Resthaven was in charge of arrangements.
Lonie Ashurst
Lonie B. Ashurst, Derby, 60, retired Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp. Engineer, died after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on May 1, 2006. He was born Jan. 23, 1946 in Springfield, Mo. He was a member of the Derby R/C Club and Chisholm Trail R/C Club, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Derby.
Visitation will be 8:45-9:45 a.m. Friday. Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2006, both at Calvary Baptist Church, 7600 E. 63rd St. So.
Ashurst was preceded in death by parents, Leonidas and Wilma (Teague) Ashurst. Survivors include wife, Myrna; daughters and son-in-law, Jill and Todd Loomis, and Sara Ashurst, all of Derby; son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Lindsay Ashurst of Emporia; grandchild, Elizabeth; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Barbara Ashurst of Springfield, Mo.

Viola Bates
Viola M. (Love) Bates, age 90, of Clearwater, farmer’s wife, passed away Monday, May 1, 2006.
Viola Marjorie Love Bates was born March 11, 1916 in Millerton, Kan. She was one of seven children born to her parents, Orie and Fayrah Haines Love. Viola was united in marriage to Kay L. Bates on July 30, 1936 in Gueda Springs, Kan. She was a farmer’s wife all of her married
life.
She was a member of Clearwater United Methodist Church, a Ninnescah Valley 4-H Club leader, and Past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge. She received recognition for 60 years of membership of Silver Creek F.C. E.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, with family present 6-8 p.m. at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2006, at Clearwater United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kay, on November 3, 1977, and son, Karl, on March 3, 1999; parents, Orie and Fayrah; sisters, Doris Carter, Virginia Lawrenz; brothers, William Love, and Orie Love.
Survivors include sister, Leila Anderson of Clearwater; brother, Ernie Love of Haysville; grandchildren and spouses, Trava and Rick Hoover of Viola, Kelly and Janet Bates, Matt and Kimberly Bates, all of Clearwater, Karla and Craig Carson of Springfield, Mo., Grant and Amy Bates of Hutchinson; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established in her name with Ninnescah Valley 4-H Club, c/o Elizabeth Koch, 10143 S. Meridian, Peck, KS 67120.

Jack Goss
Jack Goss, 52, of Perryton, Texas passed away Friday, April 28, 2006 at the Ochiltree General Hospital in Perryton.
Jack Lynn Goss was born Dec. 5, 1953 in Berkley, California, the son of John Newton and Dortha Nell Johnston Goss, Jr. The family moved to Hardesty, Oklahoma where Jack went to school to the fifth grade. They then moved to Springer N.M. and then to Booker, Texas, where he graduated from high school with the Class of 1972. He continued his education at Friends University receiving his B.S. in Education. He began teaching in Cheney, Kan. and taught there for 16 years.
He served as sponsor of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and sponsored many kids to Washington, D.C.
On July 22, 1977 in Cheney, Jack was united in marriage to Linda Hillman. They moved from Cheney to Perryton, Texas where they lived for three years and then to Augusta, Kan., for one year. They then returned to Perryton, Texas. Jack taught at Balko Public Schools for eight years and taught Social Studies, History and Government.
Jack coached girls basketball, helped with football and was a school bus driver. He refereed many sports for the past five years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Perryton, Texas, was a deacon, taught Sunday school in junior high and high school, was a church greeter and sang in the church choir; he worked with the Gideon’s. Jack loved to fly and received his private pilot’s license in 1976 and was a member of AOPA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Linda of the home; three sisters, Debbie Ivy and her husband Ron of Aurora, Colo., Donna Landes and her husband David of Amarillo, Texas and Dorla Harris and her husband Keith of Perryton, Texas; his aunt and uncle, Kay and Jim McPherson of Gilbert, Ariz.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Perryton, Texas, with Pastor Rev. Richard Laberty and Rev. Toby Taylor officiating. Interment was in the Union Center cemetery east of Adams, Okla., directed by the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker, Okla.
Memorials may be given to the Gideon’s or the American Cancer Society and may be left at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., P.O. Box 745, Hooker, Oklahoma 73945.
Elsie G. Rhodes
Elsie G. (Kimle) Rhodes, 88, of Marion, Kan., died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at Select Specialty Care Hospital, located at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Survivors include her son Paul Rhodes and his wife Amy Crouch of Goddard, Kan.
She was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Campbell, Neb., the daughter of Fred Jacob Kimle and Mary Sophia Lutkemeier. She grew up on a farm near Campbell, attended rural schools as a child and graduated from Campbell High School.
After high school, she graduated from Hastings Business College in Hastings, Neb., and then worked in the accounting department of the Hastings Daily Tribune.
On Sept. 18, 1955, Elsie married
William G. “Bill” Rhodes in First Presbyterian Church of Campbell. They made their home in Gaylord, Kan., where Bill worked for the local lumber yard and later had a long career as a custodian with the local school district.
The couple had two sons, Paul and Bruce Rhodes. Bruce Rhodes and his wife Brenda, of Marion, Kan., also survive.
Elsie was a dedicated homemaker and mother, and later joined her husband on the school custodial staff, where she was employed part-time for many years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting, ceramics, and traveling to Colorado with her family. She also enjoyed women’s club activities in the community.
She was a long-time member of Gaylord Community Church, where she was active with various church groups. After her husband’s death on Aug. 11, 1997, she moved to Marion, Kan., where she had lived for the past eight years.
In Marion, she was active with the Senior Citizens Center, and with groups at Hilltop Apartments, where she had resided in recent years.
She was preceded in death by her sister Edna Eckhardt, and brother Paul Kimle.
Other survivors include her sister Erma Meyer of Great Bend, Kan.; brother Phil Kimle of Thermopolis, Wyo.; grandchildren Abby Rhodes of Columbia, Mo., Matt and Molly Rhodes of Marion, Kan., and Bill and Katie Rhodes of Goddard, Kan.; and one great-grandchild, Noah Rhodes.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 3, at Gaylord Community Church in Gaylord, Kan. Burial was in Gaylord Cemetery.
