Vernie N. Shanklin, 88, of Easton, Kansas formerly of Kansas City, KS. died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the Country Care Convalescent Home where she had been a resident since December of 1998. Funeral Services will be 1:30 P.M. Thursday, March 22 at Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave. Kansas City, KS 66102. Burial Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 - 1:30 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Catholic Charities Hospice and/or Central Baptist Theological Seminary. Mrs. Shanklin was born January 8, 1913, in Bagnell, Missouri. Vernie was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Charles B. Shanklin of Kansas City, KS. His career with Sinclair, Arco, BP. and Standard of Ohio, moved them to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Chicago, IL, and Atlanta, Georgia before retirement and their returning home to Kansas City, KS. Vernie was a long time member of First Baptist Church, 2900 Minnesota Ave. Kansas City, KS. where she was a member of the Win-One Class and Missionary Circles and a charter member and volunteer for the Shepherd's Center of Kansas City, KS. Survivors include her two sons Charles E. Shanklin and wife Barbara, Carlsbad, CA, Robert E. Shanklin and wife Trish, Leavenworth, KS, five grandchildren Jo Farren and husband Dan, Long Beach, CA, Scott Shanklin and wife Karen, Killeen, TX, Kirstin Hadel and husband Richard, Overland Park, KS, MaKaela Carter and husband Dan, Houston, TX, Kent Shanklin and wife Melissa, Houston, TX; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Weston Carter of Houston, TX. She was a 1933 graduate of Bishop Ward High School and attended Sarachon-Hooley Business School. She had been a legal secretary for 30 yrs, retiring in 1968. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, its Altar Society & the Wyco Solos. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Keating, Jr. in 1982, a brother, John Ronan and a sister, Kathleen Ronan. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Klaczak and her husband, Frank, Bedford, TX, 3 sons, Terry Keating & Timothy Keating, K.C.KS, Patrick Keating and his wife, Sharon, Overland Park, KS, a brother,Thomas Ronan, Independence, MO, a sister, Rita Yoksh, Overland Park, KS. and numerous nieces and nephews. Dean was a Navy Veteran of WWII, a member of the Stephens United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maisie, and three sisters.
