Jayna Faith Barnhart was born
December 3, 2011, daughter of Julie Jeffery and Jason Barnhart. God took Jayna to heaven on February 12, 2012. She is survived by her parents, her brothers and sisters Alexis and Logan Barnhart, Breanna Trout, McKenna George, and Kaden and MJ Jeffery. Jayna was loved and will be missed by maternal grandparents Selma Ganley, Moe Merriott, James and Mary Ganley, paternal grandparents Victor and Diane Smith, plus many aunts, uncles and cousins. July 13, 1930, in Horton, Kan., to John and Hazel Baxter. He graduated Salutatorian from DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Kan., in 1948. John was drafted into the Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War until December, 1953. He continued in the Reserves until his Honorable Discharge January, 1960. John married
Martha Ruth Saler on June 22, 1952, in Eudora, Kan. He worked as a theater projectionist, restaurant manager, in manufacturing, and then sold insurance until his retirement in 2003. He is survived by his wife, Martha; sister, Delores Lycan; his children, Kathy Baxter, Dee Dickerson, Marjorie and Daniel Vance, Jackie Baxter, and John Baxter; grandchildren, Tracy and Jerzy Boczkowski, Brad and Brandie Baxter, and Dylan Schoon; and great-grandsons, Trevor and Trey Boczkowski; along with an extended group who considered him family. June 9, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., and lived here all his life. He was a partner in the law firm of Slagle, Bernard and Gorman, P.C., and practiced law with the same firm and its predecessors continuously from 1948 until his retirement in 2010. He attended school in Kansas City, graduating from Westport High School. He graduated from the University of Kansas with an A.B. and an L.L.B. He also did postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School. His scholastic honors included Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif. He served in the United States Army during World War II as Chief Warrant Officer. He has been active in various professional organizations, including: Lawyers Association of Kansas City, Kansas City Bar Association, Estate Planning Council of Kansas City, (past president), American Bar Association, and American College of Trusts and Estates Counsels (ACTEC). He lectured on estate planning and mentored numerous lawyers throughout his years in the practice of law. He was active in other civic organizations, including: Sigma Nu Fraternity at the University of Kansas and University of Pennsylvania; Chairman, Personnel Board of Kansas City; Trustee and Counsel for The College of the Ozarks, for 21 years; President and a founding director, R.A. Long Foundation and the Estelle S. and Robert A. Long Ellis Foundation, Kansas City; Chairman, Clearinghouse for Midcontinent Foundations; Vice President and Director, Ozanam Home for Boys; President of Phi Beta Kappa of Kansas City; a founding director of Camping Connection (now Camps for Kids); Advisor and counsel, Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City; Director and officer, University Club; Society of Fellows, Nelson-Atkins Museum; Director Elmwood Cemetery Association; officer and director of the Walnuts Association; and a Director of the Kansas City Symphony. Jim was an Elder and officer of Second Presbyterian Church, Kansas City, and active in the Heartland Presbytery and the Synod of Mid-America. His wife of 66 years, Marjorie K. Bernard, predeceased him. He is survived by his son, James H. Bernard, Jr., and his two sons, Jamie and Charlie; daughter, Susan B. Lawrence, husband Richard, and their three sons, Matt and wife Karen, Brad and Joe. ELNA MURIEL DERRY
Elna Muriel Derry, 89, peacefully and quickly passed from this life March 7, 2012, at the North Kansas City Hospital. A resident of Kansas City North, Mo., Elna and Russell had previously been lifelong residents of Mercer County, Mo. Elna was born
April 22, 1922, to Hugh and Inez (Overton) Craig in Mercer County. She attended the Wilds School with her mother, "Miss Inez," the teacher. In 1939, she graduated from Princeton High School and Parsons Beauty Academy, St. Joseph, Mo. On July 4, 1940, Elna and Russell Derry, son of Abe and Maggie Derry, were married
at the Wesley Methodist Church, Trenton, Mo. The wedding date was moved from October when Russ, a professional baseball player for the Kansas City Blues, was reassigned to the Binghamton, NY, Triplets. During the next 19 years, Elna accompanied Russ as his baseball career took them to places such as New York City; Havana, Cuba; Philadelphia, Pa.; and Rochester, NY. At the end of each baseball season, they always came home to their Mercer County farm. After Russell retired from baseball, they farmed full- time raising Hereford cattle and row crops. Elna maintained a large vegetable and beautiful flower garden. Elna worked hard, without complaint, keeping a cheerful demeanor. She loved life, appreciated kindness, and was friendly, generous, and supportive in return. Elna enjoyed embroidery, flower arranging, and reading. She was very pleased when their farm was declared a Century Farm. Elna was very proud of Russ's posthumous induction into the International League Hall of Fame. Elna is survived by their daughter, Judy, her husband Wesley Mahoney, Kansas City, Mo., and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents, Elna was preceded in death by Russell on Oct. 26, 2004, her husband of over 64 years. Elna was the descendant of several Mercer County pioneers including Andrew Craig, Moses Overton, Archibald Lindsey, Adoniram Lusk, John Ristine, William S. Cordle, and Calvin Brummett. She was a member of the DAR Lovely Purchase Chapter, Order of Eastern Stars, and the Baptist Church. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Home, 305 N. Judy M. Ellis, 75, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, passed away March 15, 2012. She was born
to John and Velma Fontanini in Des Moines, Iowa on April 1, 1936, the second of five siblings. Judy graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines. She was married
to Bruce L. Ellis for 57 years, and has three children Bruce (Kim) Ellis, Maria (Jorg) Will, Lisa (David) Brown, all living in the greater KC area. Before settling in Lee's Summit, they moved around the country during Bruce's 20 years in the Marine Corps. Judy worked at Hickman Mills Clinic for 25 years retiring in 1995. She loved spending time with and attending the activities of her eight grandchildren Bob, Lauren, Natalie, Andrew, Alex, Kate, Sydney and Jake. Judy loved the beach, traveling, and having family over on Sundays and holidays (she was well- known for her famous spaghetti and meatballs). She was an avid reader who enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends. In addition to those mentioned above, Judy is survived by her sisters, brothers and their families, three great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. JOHN B. (JACK) FERGUSON
John B. (Jack) Ferguson, 83, died suddenly at home March 11, 2012, one day after his 61st wedding anniversary. Jack was born
in Oklahoma City, Okla., on May 10, 1928, to W. H. and Marjorie Ferguson. The family moved to Wichita, Kan., in December, 1934 where he enjoyed tormenting his older sister with a bull whip. After graduating from Wichita East High, Jack's "love of learning" took him to KU where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Graduating with a degree in Business, he was proud to be part of the first class to walk down "the Hill" in 1950. While at KU, Jack met Patricia Hancock. They married
in Biloxi, Miss., in 1951 while Jack was stationed there as a member of the U.S.A.F. Patty and Jack were stationed throughout the U.S. and settled back in Wichita upon his discharge in 1953. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1957 where Jack worked for Townley Metal & Hardware until retiring as Vice-President in 1985. Jack held various offices in the Hardware Group Association and was a long time member of Mission Hills Country Club and the Jolly Timers. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved spending time at "the farm" securing the periphery, clearing brush and gardening. His prized tomatoes will be missed by many. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Frances Lygrisse; aunt, Bonnie Ferguson and uncle, Owen Looney. He is survived by his wife, Patty, their children, John (Therese), Robb (Pam), Chipp (Bill) and Jennie (Laura), brother, Bill, sister, Ann and nine grandchildren. Jack's family and friends will miss his quick wit and great sense of humor, his generosity, patience and unconditional love. on November 11, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a proud graduate of Roger Bacon High School in 1952 and Xavier University in 1959. He married
Mary V. Kelly on April 7, 1956. He worked for Interstate Brands for 37 years beginning as a dockworker and retiring as Executive Vice-President. After retirement, he joined the non- profit, Uplift Organization, and served as the volunteer President for over 20 years. Frank was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #11661. Frank received the Catholic Charities Bishop Sullivan Award for Communications and Community Outreach in 2005. He was awarded a Symbols of Caregiving award from WDAF-TV Channel 4 and D.W. Newcomer's Sons in 1994. He was part of the Father Finn Society and 1831 Society from Xavier University. In 1998, Frank received Honorable Mention as a Kindest Kansas Citian. He also received recognition as a Bishop Miege "Soft Hart." As well as volunteering his time to the community, Frank enjoyed jazz music, playing golf, attending sporting events, and watching movies. He was happiest surrounded by the laughter and love of his family. Frank is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his twin brother Joe, his sister Maria (Dennis) Carver, his children Andrew, Peter (DeAnne), Thomas (Jo Anne), Philip, Anne, James (Debbie), and Matthew (Leona); his grandchildren Geremie (Allisia), Annette, Jessica, Natalie, Amanda, Marco, Luke, Paul, James, Brianna and Kaeden; one great-granddaughter Gianna, and many nieces and nephews. Sam D. Gay, 94, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Olathe. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan for their care and compassion over the last two years. Sam was born
in Garfield, Ga., on Sept. 14, 1917, the sixth of 11 children, to Dan and Rosa Gay. He graduated from Portal (Ga.) High School, and served in the US Army Air Force during World War II as an air traffic controller. In 1945 he married
Helen N. Johnson of Macksville, Kan. He was a manager at A&P grocery stores in Georgia until he and Helen moved to Pawnee County, Kan., in 1949 to help her parents on their wheat farm. In 1951 they moved to Mission, Kan., in order to be near medical treatment for a sick child. Sam started selling Watkins Products in 1959 and headed the number one distributorship in the country for many years. He finally retired at the age of 87. Sam worked hard all his life and gave generously to his churches, as well as to individuals. He enjoyed playing ball with his children and grandchildren, and often took them to baseball games, first to the KC A's and then to the Royals. Sam is preceded in death by his parents, 10 siblings, and a son, Steven Charles Gay. Sam is survived by his wife, Helen of 66 years, his children, Jane Dolbeare, Overland Park, Kan., Tim Gay (Jane), Bella Vista, Ark., and Debbie Morris (Gene), Olathe, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Judith Ann Goodin, 73, Leavenworth, Kansas passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, surrounded by her husband, children and family. Judith Ann Clark was born
May 19, 1938 in Leavenworth, Kansas the daughter of James L. Clark, Jr. and Helen L. Emery Clark. Judith graduated from Leavenworth High School, attended St. Mary's University and later received her Bachelors of Arts in Interior Design. Judith married
Robert D. Goodin, Sr. on January 19, 1955 in Leavenworth, they had four children, Judith owned and operated J. Goodin Interiors for 15 years, to include a dealership of Benjamin and Moore paint, she was also president of a local contracting company. Judith was an avid dog lover, pursuing her American Kennel Club Judges license in the early 1960's. Her judging assignments led her extensively throughout the United States, including numerous assignments abroad in China, Japan, Europe, Australia and Argentina. Judith was founding member and President of the Leavenworth Kennel Club; the King Charles Cavalier Club of Greater Kansas City; three term president of the American Pointer Club and Show Chairman of the Heart of American Kennel Club. Judith had the honor to Judge Westminster Kennel Club on several occasions. Judith was also President and Director of the American Red Cross Local chapter. She was a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Leavenworth, Kansas. Judith is survived by her husband, Robert D. Goodin, Sr. of the home; her four children, Robert D. Goodin, Jr.; Becky A. Goodin (Donnelson); James W. Goodin and Julie Goodin (Litwhiler); 11 grandchildren; a sister; niece, nephew and many friends.
