Earl N. Vulgamore

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Earl N. Vulgamore, 80, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Community Christian Church, Scott City, with Jeff Arnold and the Rev. Martin Gauby officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Vulgamore died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Scott County, the son of Charles Martin and Chelsea Luton Vulgamore. In 1940, he graduated from Shallow Water High School and then attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson.

A lifetime resident of Scott County, he was a farmer and stockman. He belonged to Community Christian Church and was a former board member of USD 466, both at Scott City, was a past board member of Shallow Water School Board, and belonged to the Shallow Water Pitch Club, National Cattleman Beef Association, Kansas Livestock Association and the 94th Infantry Division Association.

Mr. Vulgamore was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from December 1942 until December 1945 in the European Theater, 94th Division, 3rd Army, with the rank of first sergeant. Honors received during his service included the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, four Bronze Service Stars and a Silver Star Medal.

On April 10, 1946, he married Clara Nonnamaker at Scott City. She died May 13, 2002, at Scott City. He also was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and one daughter.

Survivors include a son, Larry Vulgamore of Scott City; two daughters, Diana Gonzales of Roswell, N.M., and Linda Illgner of San Antonio; a sister, Ermalea Wagner of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital or Scott County Historical Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Bertha 'Bert' Stary

A combined VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary service for Bertha M. "Bert" Stary, 78, of Hays, will begin at 6 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Mrs. Stary died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 18, 1924, at Schoenchen, the daughter of Alex and Josephine Werth Schmidt.

A homemaker, she belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary, all at Hays.

She married Adolph Linenberger. He died Aug. 28, 1967. On May 2, 1970, she married Alfred F. "Al" Stary at Denver. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Leonard Stary of Garden City; five daughters, Katherine Brendel and Donna Duran, both of Denver, Linda Stary of Garden City, Sandy Kreutzer and Paula Ruth, both of Hays; four brothers, John, Aloysius and Melvin Schmidt, all of Hays, and Francis Schmidt of Longmont, Colo.; two sisters, Josephine Haselhorst of Longmont, and Delores VanOudenhoven of Neenah, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas or the Area Agency on Aging, both in care of the funeral home, 20th and Pine, Hays, KS 67601.

Wilma B. Barnum

Wilma B. Barnum, 91, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born May 6, 1912, at Leoti, the daughter of D'Owen and Mamie L. Clark Parish. She attended school in Leoti and graduated from high school in 1931 at Winfield.

A Garden City resident since 1981, moving from Leoti, Mrs. Barnum was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a life member of Order of the Eastern Star, and belonged to Sequoyah EHU and the United Methodist Women Church Circle, all at Garden City.

On Aug. 17, 1946, she married William "Mike" Barnum at Garden City. He died Nov. 18, 1991, at Garden City. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian James; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Barnum.

Survivors include two sons, W. Dean Barnum of Salina, and Dale L. Barnum of Topeka; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wichita County Cemetery, Leoti, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home in Garden City, 620 N. Main St.

Marvin L. Harlow

SATANTA - Marvin L. Harlow, 87, of Satanta, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

He was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Seward County, the son of Robert Young and Ella Lenora Chapman Harlow.

A lifetime resident of Satanta, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and visiting with people.

Survivors include three brothers, Austin Harlow of Wichita, and Henry and Oliver Harlow, both of Satanta; three sisters, Inez Burling of Arlington, Faye Foster of Lamar, Colo., and Fern Williams of Kingman; and several uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alice McIver; and two brothers, Floyd and Sherman Harlow.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with the Rev. Ray Tweed officiating.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Satanta Happy Agers and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Judith G. Binns

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Judith G. Binns, 62, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Binns died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Greeley County Hospital, Tribune, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born July 31, 1940, at Phillipsburg, the daughter of Gene and Mary Louise Cost Henderson.

A Scott City resident since 1975, moving from Prairie Village, she was a registered nurse and had served as administrator of the Scott County Health Department until her retirement in January 2003.

Mrs. Binns was a member of the United Methodist Church and PEO, both at Scott City, and the Kansas Nursing Association.

On Feb. 26, 1961, she married Hubert Binns at Scott City. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Mike Binns of Simi Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Marci Patton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Merilee Epler of Scott City; a grandson; and three granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Health Department, in care of the funeral home.

Justin T. Martin

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Justin T. Martin, 33, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Martin died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Liberal.

He was born March 31, 1970, at Hays, the son of Lester D. Martin and Cheryl K. France.

Mr. Martin was a Scott City resident from 1971 until his graduation from Scott Community High School in 1988. He then moved to Clarendon, Texas to attend Clarendon College. In 1989, he finished the ranch and feedlot operation degree from Clarendon and then transferred to Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla., where he graduated in 1993. He was employed as a salesman at Kenworth in Liberal.

He was a member of First Christian Church, 4-H Club and Little Britches Rodeo, all at Scott City, and also belonged to Future Farmers of America, the Kansas Junior Quarter Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.

He is survived by his parents, Les Martin of Scott City, and Cheryl and Leon France, also of Scott City; a brother, Dallas Martin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his grandparents, Eldon and Anna Mae Martin of Attica, and Arthur Huseman of Scott City. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Catherine Huseman and Velma Huseman.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Arena or First Christian Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Herbert 'Herb' Leiker

Parish vigil service for Herbert L. "Herb" Leiker, 71, of Hays, will be 6 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:30 p.m. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Munjor.

Mr. Leiker died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Oct. 29, 1931, at Hays, the son of Leo A. and Angela Klaus Leiker. He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in 1949.

Mr. Leiker was an oilfield worker and a truck driver. He belonged to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 10044 of the church. Prior to moving to Hays in 1999, he was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hill City for more than 30 years.

On June 3, 1952, he married Bernetha "Bea" Boos. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Michael J. Leiker of Omaha, Neb., Timothy Leiker of Elkhart, and Steven Leiker of Hays; two daughters, Sue Ellen Trimble of Garden City, and Barbara Jean Mendoza of Winfield; five brothers, Erwin and LaVern Leiker, both of Great Bend, Reinhold and Art Leiker, both of Hays, and Kenneth Leiker of Council Grove; two sisters, Erma Dinges of Schoenchen, and Norine Leiker of Victoria; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the chapel.
