Melvin 'Mickey' Rupp
SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for Melvin J. "Mickey" Rupp, 79, will be 7 tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Inurnment will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Rupp died Monday, May 12, 2003, at his home in Scott City.
He was born Sept. 1, 1923, at Hays, the son of Jacob and Mary Graff Rupp.
A Scott City resident since 1933, moving from Hays, he was a retired postal worker. He belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of World War II, with the rank of first lieutenant.
On Nov. 7, 1943, he married Margie Norman at Wichita. She died April 1, 1981, at Denver. He also was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Marc Eric Rupp.
He is survived by three sons, Marc Rupp of Denver, Michael Rupp of Glendale, Ariz., and Mitchell Rupp of Hays; four daughters, Michelle Bauck, Margo Miller and Mari Rupp, all of Hutchinson, and Marja Driver of Denver; 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials to the Melvin J. Rupp Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Vivien E. Coerber
DEERFIELD - Funeral for Vivien E. Coerber, 84, of Deerfield, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Coerber died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born Sept. 21, 1918, at North English, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Aura and Blanche Ellen Netser Humphrey. When she was young, her family moved to Deerfield where she attended schools, graduating from Deerfield High School in 1936. She then attended Dodge City Business College.
A homemaker, Mrs. Coerber also worked as a bookkeeper for Santa Fe Motor Co. in Deerfield. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lakin, Lutheran Women's Fellowship, T.O.P.S. Club No. KS278 and the Kearny County Historical Society, was a 4-H leader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
On May 28, 1939, she married Alvin L. "Tuffy" Coerber at Deerfield. He died July 20, 1992. She also was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Arnold D. Humphrey; a sister, Norma J. Shaul; and a half brother, Mace Humphrey.
She is survived by a daughter, Carmen C. Vansteenburgh of Wichita; her mother, Lakin; a sister, Leila R. Hagler of Bella Vista, Ark.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Deerfield Alumni Association, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Edward W. Jerden
Former Garden City resident Edward W. "Ed" Jerden, 74, of Amarillo, Texas, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Amarillo.
Born April 7, 1929, at Abilene, Texas, he was adopted by Jay and Sallie Jerden and was raised in Jayton, Texas.
Mr. Jerden joined the Marine Corps in 1947 at age 17, and traveled the world. He later became a lifelong salesman.
He is survived by his wife, Joy, and a daughter, Susan Clemann, both of Amarillo; two sons, Mike Jerden of Kansas City, Kan., and Scott Jerden of Amarillo; a sister, Marie Pace of Amarillo; four grandsons; two great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.
Arrangements are pending under the direction of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Amarillo.
In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family suggests that donations be made to the Ed Jerden Memorial Fund, in care of Amarillo National Bank, Plaza One, Amarillo, TX 79102.
David Lewis Ringwalt
David Lewis Ringwalt, 82, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at the Wellness Center of Fairhaven in Sykesville, Md.
He was born July 3, 1920, at Kirksville, Mo., the son of Dr. Levi and Ethel Ringwalt. He graduated from school at Oakley in 1938, and later graduated from Northwestern University and did his graduate degree work at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Ringwalt served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked at the Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, D.C., until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Wahnaton Felts Ringwalt; a sister, Ardella Frantz of Garden City; four children, David L. Ringwalt Jr., Karen A. Highley, Janet E. Collins and Elle Ringwalt Bruner, and their mother, Sue Ringwalt; and two grandsons.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. May 27 at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Lamb Center, 3220 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22030.
Sydney J. Hampton
He was born Jan. 31, 1961, at Ulysses, the son of Asa and Phyllis Main Hampton.
A former resident of Ulysses, he worked as a cementer in the oil field industry.
Survivors include his parents of Henderson; two daughters, Krista Renee Morris of Clarksville, Tenn., and Haley Ellen Hampton of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Shelley Brown of Ulysses; his grandmother, Cleta Main of Jasper, Texas; two aunts; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating.
Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, is in charge of arrangements.
Marvin Eugene Drescher
Marvin Eugene Drescher, 46, of Fayetteville, Ark., died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at a hospital in the Fayetteville area.
He was born Oct. 29, 1956, at Lamar, Colo., the son of Theodore Wilbur and Annabelle Garman Drescher.
Mr. Drescher worked as a truck driver for many years. He belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed attending county and state fairs with his nieces.
He is survived by his mother, Annabelle Schwab of Lincoln, Ark.; three brothers, Virgil Drescher of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., Junior Moyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jerry Moyer of Lincoln; three nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, two sisters and one brother.
A memorial service was 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fayetteville Rehab nursing home. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Paul Gifford officiating.
Memorial Funeral Home of Springdale, Ark., was in charge of arrangements. Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of the burial.
Jessie Swink Harris
HUGOTON - Jessie Faye Swink Harris, 80, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.
She was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Seward County, the daughter of Frank and Ida Burchard Swink. A Hugoton resident since 1924, her family moved from the Swink homestead in Seward County when she was 2.
On Oct. 1, 1950, she married Merle Harris at Hugoton. They owned and operated the Rusada Movie Theatre in Hugoton until his death. She also was employed by Republic Gas Co., Barnes Implement and the City of Hugoton, where she worked as a bookkeeper/secretary.
Mrs. Harris was a member of Hugoton United Methodist Church, and a former member of Order of the Eastern Star and the Professional Business Women's Association. Her special interests included knitting, needlepoint, crocheting and flower gardening.
In addition to her husband, who died June 4, 1962, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Yarbrough and Wilma Brown-Clark; and two brothers, Neil and Guy Swink.
She is survived by a stepson, Richard "Dick" Harris of Rolla; two nieces; two great-nieces; four nephews; three great-nephews; one great-grandson; and several great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hugoton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donald J. Koehn officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, Stevens County Home Health Department or Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, all in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Charles C. Bosley
DIGHTON - Charles C. Bosley, 83, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.
He was born Sept. 14, 1919, at Springfield, Colo., the son of Charles F. and Pearl R. Calhoun Bosley. He attended Healy Grade School and Dighton High School, graduating in 1938.
Mr. Bosley served in the U.S. Army during World War II, assigned to the 14th Calvary at Camp Funston and to the 9th Armored Division helping to form the 711 Tank Battalion and serving as a tank driver for Company C. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and received the Purple Heart medal.
After his discharge, he returned to Lane County and was a lifelong farmer-stockman. His special interests were World War II history, participating in his military reunions, and the afternoon cribbage games at Dighton Bowl.
Mr. Bosley was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, American Legion Post No. 190, Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279 and Scott City Shrine Lodge, and had served as Dighton city councilman for the past eight years.
On Jan. 19, 1947, he married Mary Alice Durr at Dighton. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Dennis Bosley of Topeka; two daughters, Barbara Bosley of Denver, and Joan Bosley of Garden City; a son-in-law; his mother, Pearl Bosley of Scott City; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Susan Osborne; and a brother, Lewis Earl Bosley Sr.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Lane County Historical Society, both in care of the funeral home.
