Howard Lenard Zuroff
Sublette - Funeral services for Howard Lenard Zuroff, 51, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the First Baptist Church, Liberal, with Rev. David Bagwell and Rev. Dan Pearce presiding. Burial will be in the Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Mr. Zuroff died Friday, May 23, 2003 at Satanta District Hospital, Satanta.
He was born Nov. 9, 1951 at Bismarck, N.D., the son of Henry Dee and Mildred Evelyn (Hanson) Zuroff. He lived in Baker, Okla., Moscow, Liberal and Sublette for several years.
He loved his family and enjoyed being with them. He enjoyed taking his grandkids on combine rides, and visiting. An avid golfer who liked to fish, Mr. Zuroff never met a stranger.
He was a diesel mechanic for Sublette Farm Equipment, Sublette, and a member of the First Baptist Church, Liberal.
On June 1, 2002, he married Connie Coker, at Sublette. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Troy Zuroff, Liberal, and Clay Chaney, Wewoka, Okla.; four daughters, Jennifer Turpin, Devin Rodriquez and Dana Nelson, all of Liberal, and Crystal Dunkerson, Guymon, Okla.; four brothers Dennis Zuroff, Ada, S.C., Donnie Zuroff, Frenchtown, Mont., Ronnie Zuroff and Dean Zuroff, both of Bismark, N.D; one sister Dorothy Young, of Cleveland, Tenn.; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold Zuroff.
Visitation hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family and may be mailed to the funeral home at Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Zachary Joe Talavera-Garcia
Vigil service for Zachary Joe Talavera-Garcia, 13, will be at 8 p.m.. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Zachary died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at St. Catherine Hospital.
He was born June 9, 1989 in Garden City, the son of Elias Chanes and Diolselina (Garcia) Talavera.
He was a seventh-grade student at Abe Hubert Middle School. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed listening to music and spending time with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
He is survived by his parents, of the home; three brothers, Martin Lee Garcia, of the home, Jose Guadalupe Talavera and Francisco Javier Talavera, both Garden City; several aunts and uncles and many cousins.
Visitation hours are from 12 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are to Zachary Talavera-Garcia memorial fund in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
William G. 'Bill' Burkhart
Rosary for William G. "Bill" Burkhart, 85, will be 4 p.m. today at St. John Church, Spearville, followed by vigil service at 7 tonight. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Robert Schremmer officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Spearville.
Mr. Burkhart died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at his home in Spearville.
He was born Feb. 5, 1918, at Burdett, the son of George P. and Rose Burgardt Burkhart.
A lifetime resident of the Spearville area, Mr. Burkhart was a farmer and mechanic. He belonged to St. John Church at Spearville and was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 2955 at Dodge City.
On Aug. 12, 1941, he married Martina M. Hertel at Offerle. She died April 20, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wilfred.
Survivors include seven sons, Donald Burkhart of Goddard, Gary Lee Burkhart of Jetmore, Allen Burkhart of Wright, Norman Burkhart of Langdon, Thomas Burkhart of Cimarron, Roger and Mark Burkhart, both of Spearville; four daughters, Patricia Jane Grasser of Garden City, Elaine Gerber of Garden Plain, Connie Lou Burgardt of Pratt, and Linda Strecker of Spearville; his fiancee, Irene Helms of Spearville; two brothers, Clarence and Harold Burkhart, both of Kinsley; three sisters, Louise Werner of Kinsley, Irene Taylor of Liberal, and Mary Taylor of McCracken; 34 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

Victor Landeros-Jimenez
Funeral Mass for Victor Emilio Landeros-Jimenez, 17, was to be 2 p.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Victor died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born Dec. 26, 1985, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Emilio and Aracely Jimenez Landeros.
A Garden City resident since 1994, moving from Chihuahua, he had just completed his sophomore year at Garden City High School.
Victor had worked as a waiter at Golden Corral Restaurant for the past year and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. His hobbies were track, listening to music, and spending time with his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Raul, Roberto and Ricardo Landeros, all of the home; three sisters, Mireya Becerril of Garden City, Zuleima and Veronica Landeros, both of the home; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joe 'Joey' Pena
Vigil service for Joe "Joey" Pena, 5-year-old son of Alonso E. Sr. and Maria R. Rivas Pena of Garden City, will be 7 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Joey died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, from injuries he suffered after being struck by a car.
Born March 4, 1998, at Garden City, he enjoyed playing Power Rangers and playing with his dog, "Best Buddy." He belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Juan and Jason Pineda, both of Garden City, and Alonso Pena Jr., of the home; a sister, Amanda Pineda, of the home; his grandmother, Socorro Estrada of Chihuahua, Mexico; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Al Lindsten
Funeral for Al Lindsten, 82, of Goodland, will be 10:30 a.m. MT Saturday at Koons Chapel, Goodland, with the Rev. Loren Strait officiating. Burial will follow at Goodland Cemetery.
Mr. Lindsten died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 27, 1921, at St. Francis, the son of John Weaver and Mattie Maria Price Lindsten. He graduated from Highland Country School, St. Francis High School and Grand Island (Neb.) Business College.
A longtime Goodland resident, his paternal grandparents came from Sweden and homesteaded in Cheyenne County, as did his maternal grandparents, who came from Iowa.
After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in October 1945, he moved to Goodland to build a home and start farming. Later, he worked for Hilty Irrigation in Goodland, first as a mechanic and later as a manager, and then helped his son, Rod Lindsten, with the farming.
Mr. Lindsten was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Goodland Elks Lodge 1528, a former member of Goodland Masonic Bodies, and a founding member of the Goodland Gun Club for which he served as an officer for many years.
On April 26, 1942, he married Rosetta Jensen at Washington, D.C. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Rodney Lindsten of Goodland; a daughter, Karen Nickel of Johnson City; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Leibbrandt of Falls Church, Va., and Darlene Orchard of Kanorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John Weaver Lindsten.
Visitation hours are until 7 MT tonight and from 8 a.m. MT until the service Saturday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Goodland Gun Club, in care of the funeral home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735.
Thomas L. Schremmer
Vigil service for Thomas L. Schremmer, 54, of Claflin, was Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral was Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin, with the Rev. John J. Maes officiating. Burial followed at Claflin Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Mr. Schremmer died Friday, May 16, 2003, at his home.
He was born Oct. 29, 1948, at Great Bend, the son of Frank Jr. and Irene Driscoll Schremmer.
A Claflin resident since 1972, Mr. Schremmer owned and operated Schremmers Plumbing, worked at S & H Lumber and was a custodian at the Claflin schools. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council No. 1500, past Commander and Quarter Master of VFW Post No. 8668, all at Claflin, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
On June 7, 1969, he married Jane A. Hekele at Claflin. She survives. He also is survived by a son, James Schremmer of Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Kristi Greene of Garden City; five brothers, Wayne Schremmer of Wichita, Marvin Schremmer of Great Bend, Leonard Schremmer of Aurora, Colo., Melvin Schremmer of Phillipsburg, and Dick Schremmer of Derby; a sister, Dee Volpert of Great Bend; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and a brother, Alvin Schremmer.
