Edward Eugene Erickson

Edward Eugene Erickson, 66, of Kinsley, died Monday, May 26, 2003 in Kinsley.

Born to George and Erma Erickson, he was a handyman.

He married Patricia J. Berger on Nov. 17, 1962 and divorced her on Jan. 28, 1995.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Survivors include one son, Edward Eugene Erickson Jr. of Burlington, Colo.; three daughters, Barbara McGrew of Houston, Texas, Debera Ann Erickson of Shawnee, and Patricia Ann Cruz of Garden City; one brother, Kenneth Erickson of Dodge City, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Hillside Cemetery 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Hillside Cemetery in Kinsley, with the Rev. Aaron Kirkwood presiding.

Donations may be sent to the Kansas Cancer Institute, in care of McKillip Memorial Funeral Home, 623 Marsh Ave., KS 67547.

Joe A. Archuleta Jr.

Joe A. Archuleta Jr., 67, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Dec. 18, 1936, at Clayton, N.M., the son of Joe and Pauline Ortero Archuleta.

A Garden City resident for many years, he had worked for the city of Garden City and later at IBP in Holcomb. He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Garden City and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, June (Johnson) Archuleta; two sons, Leonard Archuleta of Dallas, and Joey Archuleta of Lubbock, Texas; three daughters, Patricia Lucero and Roberta Archuleta, both of Garden City, and Melody Archuleta of Lubbock; three brothers, Tellis and Freddie Archuleta, both of Hugoton, and Joe Archuleta of Rolla; a sister, Angie Archuleta of Seattle; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Archuleta.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Garden Valley Retirement Village, with the Revs. Richmond Graham and Jose Gloria officiating. Inurnment was in Hugoton Cemetery.

Memorials to the Joe Archuleta Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Viola Evelyn Wadel

Funeral for Viola Evelyn Becker Wadel, 81, was scheduled for today at Bethany Mennonite Church in Rich Hill, Mo. Lance Dirks and Myron Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Bethany Mennonite Cemetery, Rich Hill.

Mrs. Wadel died Monday, May 26, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

She was born Sept. 17, 1921, the daughter of Cornelius and Lena Becker, and grew up in Kansas and Missouri. When she was 7, her father died. In her early teen-age years, she worked and lived with other families.

On Sept. 7, 1941, she married Lester D. Wadel at McPherson. They spent the early years of their marriage in Greensburg and later moved to Missouri. He died Sept. 10, 1995. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a great-grandchild, a brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Wadel worked on her farm, enjoyed spending time in her garden and tending her flowers, loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed inviting guests for meals and fellowship. She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite when she was 13.

She is survived by four sons, William Wadel of Farmington, Ky., Walter Wadel of Garden City, David and Jim Wadel, both of Foster, Mo.; two daughters, Sharon Huston of Foster, and Linda McDaniel of Rich Hill; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin and Ben Becker; and three sisters-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to Bethany Mennonite Church.

Lela Martin

Lela Elizabeth Zook Martin, 94, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at her home in Garden City.

The daughter of Daniel B. and Mary Melinda Umberger Zook, she was born Dec. 16, 1908, in her parent's home in Pawnee County. She graduated from Hesston Academy in 1927, and attended Kansas State Teachers College of Hays and Goshen College in Goshen, Ind.

Mrs. Martin taught one year at Antelope School in southeast Hamilton County and taught several years in the grade schools of Zook and Larned. She maintained a relationship with many of her former students.

On June 15, 1938, she married Ora V. Martin at Larned. In 1940, they moved to the Menno community in southwest Kearny County, where they farmed for 50 years. They lived in Garden City from 1949 to 1962 and returned in 1990.

A homemaker, she was PTA president for Alta Brown School in Garden City and a founder of Wheat Hearts, a women's auxiliary of the Kansas Wheat Growers Association. She helped promote wheat products by attending the International Wheat Agreement Conference in 1959 in Geneva, Switzerland. She was a member of the Kansas Civil Rights Commission from 1963 to 1965, and her family was host for an AFS student from Norway. Her hobbies included genealogy, baking, quilting and china painting.

Mrs. Martin's early years were shaped by the tradition of the Mennonite Church. As an adult, she joined the United Methodist Church. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Garden City, and was an active participant in the United Methodist Women in Syracuse and Garden City for more than 50 years.

She is survived by a son, Carl E. Martin of Wichita; a daughter, Leora K. Kline of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Jon Winston.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Garden City or Southwestern College at Winfield, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Georgia Nannarone

Requiem Eucharist for Georgia Nannarone, 75, will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Larry Steadman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Nannarone died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 9, 1927, at Garden City, the daughter of Louis and Anna Angeles. She attended Garden City schools and was a 1945 graduate of Garden City High School.

A lifetime Garden City resident, she was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. She enjoyed gardening, painting, drawing, sewing, crocheting and traveling to Las Vegas.

On Jan. 3, 1945, she married Al Nannarone at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by a son, David Nannarone of Garden City; a brother, Chris Angeles of Garden City; two sisters, Katie Crump of Yuma, La., and Maurine Huber of Garden City; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Elsie A. Klemp

Funeral for Elsie A. Klemp, 97, of Scottsbluff, Neb., and formerly of Garden City, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel, Scottsbluff, with the Rev. Sheila Taylor officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Memorial Park in St. Joseph, Mo.

Mrs. Klemp died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Beverly Health Care Center in Scottsbluff.

She was born Jan. 29, 1906, at Leavenworth, the daughter of Alfred and Pearl Bish.

On March 17, 1928, she married O. Reid Klemp. They moved to St. Joseph in 1929. In 1995, they moved to Garden City, where she lived until moving to Scottsbluff in 2002 to be near her daughters.

Mrs. Klemp taught school in Missouri and Garden City for many years. After retiring, she and her husband traveled and were active rockhounds. She had many hobbies, including walking, reading, knitting and volunteering for numerous organizations. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Fees of Apache Junction, Ariz., and June Landers of Mitchell, Neb.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Memorials have been established to the Alzheimer's Association.

Curtis Marvin Herron

MANTER - Funeral for Curtis Marvin Herron, 49, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Johnson, with the Rev. Bob Warner officiating. Burial will follow at Elkhart Cemetery.

Mr. Herron died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at his home in Manter.

He was born Jan. 12, 1954, the son of Marvin T. and Ilene Ballinger Herron. He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1972 and was a graduate of the diesel mechanics program at Liberal Area Vocational School.

A lifetime resident of Morton County, he was a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed being with his family, hunting, fishing, and raising and training his Belgian Draft horses, Jim and Lady.

On Nov. 9, 1974, he married Debra K. Bezona at Manter. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Chad Herron, two daughters, Jammi and Leslie Herron, and his parents, all of Manter; three sisters, Barbara Hammond of Goodwell, Okla., Judy O'Bryan of Johnson, and Linda Hammond of Garden City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father- and mother-in-law; a brother-in-law; and a nephew.

Memorials to the Curtis Marvin Herron Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
