Ellender R. Strickert
SCOTT CITY - Ellender R. Strickert, 78, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born July 12, 1924, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Milo R. and Gertrude Mae Rainey Huffman. She graduated from Scott Community High School in 1943.
A retired school bus driver and a homemaker, Mrs. Strickert had been a lifetime resident of Scott City. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, was a Lutheran Ladies aide, and belonged to Willing Workers EHU and Scott County Hospital Auxiliary.
On April 24, 1949, she married J.R. Strickert at Scott City. He died June 10, 1996, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, George and Lee Huffman.
Survivors include two sons, Robert W. Strickert of Denver, and Ronald L. Strickert of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Loleta M. Strickert of Salina; three brothers, James B. Huffman of Phoenix, Darrell Huffman of Nickerson, and Ronald Huffman of Pleasonton; two sisters, Vada Mae Timken of Orange, Calif., and Nadine Henson of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Robert Roberts and Marvin Zorn officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Scott County Hospital Auxiliary or the Lutheran Hour, both in care of the funeral home.
Kent L. Hutchins
SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Kent L. Hutchins, 62, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating.
Mr. Hutchins died Friday, April 11, 2003, in Scott County.
He was born Oct. 19, 1940, at Dodge City, the son of Marion and Grace Everett Hutchins. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 1959 and attended Kansas State University where he graduated cum laude in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in ag economics. While there, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity and a Gamma Sigma Delta scholastic honorary.
A lifelong resident of Scott County, Mr. Hutchins was a farmer.
On Aug. 10, 1963, he married Dorothy Johnson at Stafford. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Doug Hutchins of Denver; a daughter, Andrea Hutchins of Mesa, Ariz.; his father, Scott City; and a brother, Dan Hutchins of Scott City. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or the Ministerial Alliance Bread Basket, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Alice A. Linenberger
Vigil service for Alice A. Linenberger, 79, will be 7 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Miss Linenberger died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born March 16, 1924, at Marienthal, the daughter of Joe and Susanah Quint Linenberger. When she was young, the family moved to Colorado. In 1932, they moved to Garden City where she graduated from Garden City High School in 1942. She then graduated from St. Catherine School of Nursing in Garden City.
Miss Linenberger worked for about six years as a registered nurse before attending the University of Houston in Texas for two years. She then worked as a medical record librarian as a civilian at Air Force bases throughout the southern part of the United States, first in Houston, then at Alexandria, La., for 10 years, at Chattanooga, Tenn., for 10 years, and at Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center in Biloxi, Miss., for 10 years. After retiring in 1989, she returned to Garden City.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and the Federal Retiree Organization, a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and volunteered at the Adult Learning Center in Garden City. She enjoyed reading and listening to music.
She is survived by two brothers, Norbert and Jack Linenberger, both of Garden City; and two sisters, Isabel Frick of Garden City, and Sister Celeste Linenberger of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Terry J. 'Duke' Harris
HUGOTON - Terry J. "Duke" Harris, 64, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Sept. 30, 1938, at Hugoton, the son of Glen and Beatrice Clark Harris. His early years were spent at Hugoton, where he attended schools before moving to Farmington, N.M., with his family in 1953. After graduating from high school in Farmington in 1954, he attended Highlands University at Farmington for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1958. He earned the rank of sergeant paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, and was honorably discharged in 1962.
Mr. Harris worked as a carpenter, in the oilfield, and as a police dispatcher for the Stevens County Sheriff's Department. A member of the Kansas Watercolor Society, he was well-known as a talented professional artist. His special interests included his art work, trivial games, collecting handguns and gardening.
On May 13, 1989, he married Jan Begnoche at Hugoton. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Shawn Harris of Austin, Texas, Danny and David Arnold, both of Hugoton; two daughters, Shannon Crane of Tulsa, Okla., and Anita Talbert of Hugoton; his mother, Manhattan; two brothers, Kent Harris of Gardenville, Nev., and Dennis Harris of Wichita; a sister, Joann Lamberson of Manhattan; an uncle; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Assembly of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Helen T. Dreiling
Helen T. Dreiling, 71, a registered nurse, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at her home in Centennial, Colo., after a long illness.
A former Garden City resident, she is survived by John, her husband of 49 years; four sons, James, Richard, John Jr. and Robert; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial service will be noon Monday at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, Littleton, Colo.

Brannon Chayston Stevens
He was born Feb. 24, 1978, at Scott City, the son of Rick C. Stevens and Janet L. (Turley) King. He graduated from Scott City High School in 1996 and attended Fort Hays State University.
Mr. Stevens had been a Scott City resident until moving in July 2001 to Greeley, Colo., where he was employed with Sharp Brothers Seed Co. He was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City.
On July 11, 1998, he married Dustie Smith at Scott City. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Hunter Stevens of Greeley; his parents, Jan and Jim King, and Rick Stevens, all of Scott City; three brothers, Chandler Stevens of Madison, Ala., Corbin Stevens of Scott City, and Curtis Stevens of Salina; a sister, Cristalyn Kirchhoff of Gaylord; his stepfather, Mark Kuhlman of Scott City; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Turley, Margie Stevens and Herb Stevens, all of Scott City.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Chayston Stevens Memorial Scholarship Fund for Hunter Stevens, in care of the funeral home.
Marie Ellen Harris
LAKIN - Vigil service for Marie Ellen Harris, 64, will be 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Harris died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born June 15, 1938, at Norwich, Norfolk, England, the daughter of Sydney and May Warr Batch. She graduated from Heigham House School in Norwich in 1953.
On Jan. 26, 1956, she married Charles Irvin Harris at Norwich. They came to the United States on Jan. 8, 1958, and made their home in Lakin.
A homemaker, Mrs. Harris enjoyed her family and friends, crocheting, knitting, playing bingo, opera, gardening, and writing letters to her friends across America and throughout the world. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Lakin.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Anthoney Harris of Garden City and Michael Harris of Lakin; three daughters, Jackelyne Strout of Woodland Park, Colo., Michelle Ratzlaff of Red Cloud, Neb., and Jeanine Bailor of Holcomb; two sisters, Dorreen Nunn of Ipswich, England, and Ann George of Norwich; 12 grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Thomas, Sydney, Stanley and Peter; three sisters, Winifred, Joan and Christine; and a grandson, Jeremy James Wedel.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Bruce J. Laveirge
SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Bruce J. Laveirge, 49, of Scott City, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. David Waters officiating.
Mr. Laveirge died Monday, April 7, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 6, 1953, in Frankfurt, Germany, the son of Stephen W. and Jeanne M. Snyder Laveirge.
A Scott City resident for 25 years, moving from Colorado Springs, Colo., he was an independent contractor.
On Feb. 24, 2003, he married Glenda Gough in Colorado Springs. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Melissa Laveirge of Colorado Springs; two stepsons, Michael Marcy of Ottawa, and Nathaniel Gough of Garden City; a stepdaughter, Amanda Allen of Falcon, Colo.; his mother, Colorado Springs; four sisters, Bonnie Mariani and Marion Bradley, both of Colorado Springs, Karen Waters of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Marcy Chadwell of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho; two brothers, Steve Laveirge of Pueblo, Colo., and Gary Laveirge of Colorado Springs; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his father.
