Ernestine Crockett
Funeral for Ernestine Crockett, 79, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Crockett died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Ted and Faye Muck Cossman. She grew up west of Jetmore, attended rural schools in Hodgeman County and went to high school in Jetmore for one year before the family moved to Burdett where she graduated from high school in 1942. After high school, she moved to Wichita where she worked at Cessna Aircraft during World War II.
On May 14, 1944, she married Elvin "Davy" Crockett at Burdett. After World War II, she and her husband lived in Burdett, Manhattan, Ness City and Dighton before moving to Garden City in 1958.
Mrs. Crockett was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Church Circle, and was a former board member of the Southwest Kansas Community Concert Association and had served as membership director for the group for several years. She was crusade chairman of the American Cancer Society for seven years and served as treasurer of the group for 25 years, volunteered in the "Reach to Recovery" program through the American Cancer Society and St. Catherine Hospital, and was a volunteer at the Gift Nook at St. Catherine Hospital. She also was involved in delivering "Meals on Wheels" in Garden City and in Sweet Adelines. A homemaker, she enjoyed flower gardening and her volunteer work.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Max Crockett of Holcomb; two daughters, Janice Wagner and Susan Mustain, both of Garden City; two sisters, Teddy Tull of Jetmore, and LaZora Daughenbaugh of Aurora, Colo.; an aunt; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Alan Crockett; a brother, Keith Cossman; and a grandson, Peter Wagner.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Ray Ernest Johnson
COPELAND - Ray Ernest Johnson, 96, of Dodge City and formerly of Copeland, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Home in Dodge City.
He was born July 27, 1906, in Montgomery County, the son of Clarence Madison and Nellie Bessie Goff Johnson. The family moved from Minneola to Gray County in August 1916.
Mr. Johnson worked as a custodian for USD 476 at Copeland Grade School for 28 1/2 years and was a farmer for many years. He belonged to the United Methodist Church of Copeland, and served as Sunday School superintendent and as assistant Sunday School superintendent at the church for several years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his work and being with people.
On June 26, 1927, he married Rachael Alice Thirsk at Winfield. She died June 4, 1993. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ray Ernest Johnson Jr.; and two sisters, Vada Wilson and Verna Lucille Johnson.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Gene Johnson of Aubrey, Texas; four daughters, Phyllis Raydene Ford of Fruita, Colo., Catherine Dalton of Barling, Ark., Shirley Anne Richardson of Dodge City, and Janice Joanne Zechner of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Mary Marcella Sheperd of Overland Park; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Copeland, with the Rev. Warren Cico officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the church or Copeland Cemetery, and may be left at Dunham Drilling in Copeland or mailed to the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
John Floyd Smith
John Floyd Smith, 77, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at NHC Nursing Home in Maryland Heights, Mo.
He was born Nov. 17, 1926, at Lilbourn, Mo., the son of George Elvie and Ella May Hart Smith.
A Maryland Heights resident since the 1940s, moving from Lilbourn, he was a long haul truck driver.
He is survived by a son, Steven W. Smith of Springfield, Mo.; and a sister, Wanda Pendegrass of Garden City.
A memorial service is planned for later in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the John Floyd Smith Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
Orlan P. Johnson
ULYSSES - Orlan P. Johnson, 80, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Nov. 24, 1922, in Wilson County, the son of Robert Oxley and Minnie Florence Preston Johnson.
On July 26, 1943, he married Marjorie Jean Metcalf at Ulysses. She died Oct. 20, 1998. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Mahmand, Harry and Kenneth Johnson; and two sisters, Vergie Adams and Lucy McCready.
Mr. Johnson had worked for Koss Construction Co., Topeka, as a maintenance supervisor on road construction for 38 years before retiring in 1988. He was a former member of the VFW and American Legion, and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Shamrock Bay Aircraft Carrier during World War II. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and his family, and shared the love of cats with his wife.
He is survived by three sisters, Pauline Alford of Ulysses, Nora Dack of Van Orme, Texas, and Jesse Kline of Big Lake, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis H. Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Post No. 79.

William J. 'Bill' Coerber
LAKIN - William Joseph "Bill" Coerber, 54, died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Tunica County, Miss.
He was born Jan. 15, 1949, at Lakin, the son of Bernard and Lydia Witman Coerber.
A Lakin resident for most of his life, he moved to Grove, Okla., in 2001.
Mr. Coerber worked at the Kearny County Sheriff's Department in the mid-1970s, serving as undersheriff for about two years. He then began working as a slaughter engineer at IBP in Holcomb before moving on to become plant engineer at Monfort Packing Plant in Garden City. Upon retirement in 1993, he enjoyed spending time fishing, boating on Grand Lake in Oklahoma, feeding and watching his birds, working in his woodshop, sports, NASCAR races and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the VFW in Garden City and had served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Infantry during the Vietnam War. While in the service, he received the Purple Heart.
On Feb. 14, 1978, he married Linda Cox at Lakin. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Bernard "Bernie" Coerber of Fayetteville, Ark.; three sisters, Berneda Miller, Leatha Carmichael and Patty Roberts, all of Garden City; and his stepfather, Harvey Coen of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakin Cemetery, with Paul Horwat and Jim Coppedge officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Barbara Janice Taylor
Barbara Janice Taylor, 65, of Mount Ada, Ark., died Sunday, March 2, 2003, after a long-term battle with diabetes.
She and her husband, George Byron Taylor, had owned the Kirby Vacuum Company in Garden City at one time.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kala Renee Cramer of Texarkana, Texas; two sons, Brian Greg Taylor of Van Buren, Ark., and Bradley Gene Taylor of Little Rock, Ark.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel in the Montgomery County Nursing Center in Mount Ida.
Thornton Funeral Home, Mount Ida, is in charge of arrangements.
Rogena Wilson
Rogena Wilson, 65, of Wichita, died Monday, March 3, 2003.
A retired housekeeper, she had been employed by Fidelity Management & Satellite Cleaning.
Survivors include four daughters, Debbie Rojas of Garden City, Janice Wilson and Nicole Branch, both of Wichita, and Lisa Collins of Chicago; a son, Mondre Wilson of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, Robert Koehn of Kansas City, Kan., and Larry Koehn of Montezuma; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel, Wichita.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
James C. 'Jim' Owens
James C. "Jim" Owens, 72, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 17, 1930, at Aztec, N.M., the son of James C. and Connie Conder Owens.
A Garden City resident since 1956, moving from Leoti, he had been the manager for the Garden City gas plant, later known as Sunflower Electric. He retired in 1993.
Mr. Owens was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Tyrian Masonic Lodge, both at Garden City, belonged to the Scottish Rite of Salina, and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Juno during the Korean conflict.
On Aug. 6, 1956, he married Louvae O. Krenzel at Clovis, N.M. She survives. He also is survived by four daughters, Rikki Gilbert of Knoxville, Tenn., Joya Piland of Grand Junction, Colo., Stacy Reyes of Garden City, and Joni Kreutzer of Ulysses; a sister, Susie Oberheim of Garden City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Spohn Owens.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
