Nettie Wiebe
Nettie Wiebe, 78, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at her home in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Einlage, Zaporozhye, Ukraine, the daughter of Johann and Helene Siemens Rempel.
A homemaker, she worked as a licensed practical nurse in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and attended Mennonite Brethren Bible College for two years in Winnipeg. She also did secretarial work and translation for 10 years at Mennonite Brethren Missions Services in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Wiebe was a member of Garden Valley Church and served as a Sunday School teacher and Awana leader. She enjoyed reading, walking, and spending time with her family and friends.
On Aug. 21, 1971, she married Ted J. Wiebe at Hillsboro. He survives. She also is survived by a daughter, Lisa Wiebe, of the home; a brother, John Remple of British Columbia, Canada; three sisters, Helene Frohlich of Heimerzheim, Germany, Elisabeth Schneider of Andernach, Germany, and Kathe Derr of Waldbrol, Germany; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Lori Lynn Wiebe.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Garden Valley Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Tim Davis and Steve Prieb officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Church or Gideons International, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Debra J. Kirk
SCOTT CITY - Debra J. Kirk, 51, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, in Garden City.
She was born Jan. 4, 1952, at Beaver, Okla., the daughter of Eugene Wesley and Wilma Shinnault Sherrill. She graduated from Meade High School in 1970 and from St. Mary's of the Plains College in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in history.
A Scott City resident since 1981, moving from Liberal, she was the blood donor recruiter for the American Red Cross in Garden City. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scott City, belonged to Boot Hill Toastmasters and Great Plains Foundation, both at Dodge City, and was a past director of the Scott City Chamber of Commerce.
On Nov. 25, 1983, she married Chuck Kirk at Scott City.
Survivors include two sons, Patrick and Andrew Kirk, both of Scott City; and her father, of Beaver. She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Barbara.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Forgan (Okla.) Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Great Plains Foundation, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Rita Townsend
Rita Jean Hineman Townsend, 77, died Sunday, March 23, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 21, 1925, at Dighton, the daughter of George W. and Nancy Esther Hutchins Hineman. She grew up in Dighton and attended school there, graduating from Dighton High School in 1943. She then attended Colorado Women's College in Denver, where she met Robert E. "Bob" Townsend. They were married Feb. 2, 1945, at Denver.
After World War II, she and her husband lived in North Carolina for about a year before moving to Garden City. They had lived in Finney County and Garden City for 54 years.
A longtime piano teacher, Mrs. Townsend founded the Piano Teacher's League in Garden City. She enjoyed genealogy, had many books published and received the Jacobus Award for her genealogy book written about her own family. She also enjoyed reading, playing the violin, judging piano contests, and traveling to Finland, Israel, Great Britain and Hong Kong, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. Townsend was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Keystone and Builders Sunday School classes. She was a member of the Baha'i faith, Kansas Genealogical Society and the Finney County Genealogical Society.
Her husband died Dec. 1, 2001. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dick Hineman; and a sister, Rachel Hineman.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Townsend of Redlands, Calif., Steve Townsend of Evanston, Ill., and Mark Townsend of Dunkirk, Ind.; a daughter, Nancy Lynn Bell of Garden City; two brothers, Kalo and Herb Hineman, both of Dighton; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Eunice Mae Gatlin
Funeral for Eunice Mae Gatlin, 70, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Gatlin died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 29, 1932, at Garden City, the daughter of George and Juanita Chaffey Kauffman. She grew up and attended school in Garden City.
A Garden City resident since returning from Goodland in 2002, she had previously lived in Lakin and Hays. A homemaker, she also worked as a licensed practical nurse in Wichita and as a house cleaner at the Holiday Inn in Hays. She enjoyed puzzles, painting, traveling and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
In the mid-1950s, she married Thomas Clinkingbeard at Garden City. He died in the early 1960s. On June 1, 1964, she married John D. Gatlin at Garden City. He died Nov. 17, 1995. She also was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and one sister.
Survivors include three sons, Tommy Clinkingbeard of Wichita, Douglas Gatlin of Goodland, and Robert Gatlin of Garden City; a daughter, Connie Force of Wichita; a brother, Harold "Toby" Kauffman of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Thelma Eichman of Liberal; and two grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Eunice Gatlin Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Russell James Birkle
Funeral for Russell James Birkle, 66, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Word of Life Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Monte Birkle and Gary Don Newman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Mr. Birkle died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at his home in Garden City.
He was born Nov. 9, 1936, at Gate, Okla., the son of Jone and Lillie Meier Birkle. The family moved to Gove County when he was young and later moved to Garden City where he graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College. He later graduated with an art degree from the University of Kansas. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After the service, he returned to Garden City and worked as a self-employed painter. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his niece and nephew, and also enjoyed animals, his work, yard work and sketching.
He is survived by a daughter, Rocky Hines of Las Vegas; five brothers, Jerry and Greg Birkle, both of Garden City, Douglas Birkle of Maple Grove, Wash., Gary Birkle of Denver, and the Rev. Monte Birkle of Anacortes, Wash.; a sister, Beverly Birkle of Garden City; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Word of Life Church, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Josephine A. Salinas
Josephine A. Salinas, 77, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, following a long illness with diabetes.
She was born April 27, 1925, at Garden City, the daughter of Jose and Mary Guadalupe Acosta Robles.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, she had been a nurse's aide at St. Catherine Hospital. After her retirement, she was a caregiver for the elderly.
Mrs. Salinas was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City and was a church volunteer. She enjoyed traveling, reading, spending time with her grandchildren and cooking for her family.
On Oct. 15, 1949, she married Esteban G. Salinas at Casa Grande, Ariz. He survives. She also is survived by four sons, Gerard E. Salinas of Addison, Texas, Fred J. Salinas of El Campo, Texas, Steven P. Salinas of Rockwall, Texas, and Robert J. Salinas of Garden City; a brother, Manuel Robles of Garden City; two sisters, Susan Mujica of Garden City, and Connie Garcia of Borger, Texas; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Genaro, Frank and John; and five sisters, Eleanor Salas, Maria Gonzalez, Jessie Avila, Olivia Delgado and Kathleen Saiz.
Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by the rosary. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the St. Dominic Catholic Church Building Fund, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.
Vivian L. Nickerson
ULYSSES - Vivian L. Nickerson, 81, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.
She was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Bent County, Colo., the daughter of Edward and Ollie May Mynatt Zimmerman.
A Ulysses resident since 1949, she was a homemaker and belonged to Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, Prairie Star EHU and the Happy Hour Club, all at Ulysses.
On July 25, 1938, she married Merle E. Nickerson at Raton, N.M. He died Dec. 24, 1985. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Woodruff; and a great-grandson, Nathan.
Survivors include a son, Merle Nickerson Jr., Ulysses; two granddaughters; a brother, Bert Zimmerman of Phoenix; two sisters, Gladys Turner and Marjorie Wilson, both of Las Animas, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren.
Private family graveside service will be in Ulysses Cemetery, with Helen Durham officiating.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Grant County Senior Center Nursing Care, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
John Thomas Gillespie
John Thomas Gillespie, 78, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove, Wis.
He was born Oct. 15, 1924, at Marshall, Mo., the son of Thomas A. and Louis Benedick Gillespie.
He is survived by Dorothy Ugalde of Soldiers Grove; two sons, John T. Gillespie Jr. and Jeff Gillespie, both of Garden City; a granddaughter; and a sister, Marg McDaniels of Marshall.
No services are planned. Following cremation, his remains will be buried in Marshall at a later date.
