Julie Ann 'Judy' Conway

Julie Ann "Judy" Conway, 72, of Grove, Okla., died from ocular melanoma Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Grove Nursing Center.

She was born March 10, 1930, near Sterling in Comanche County, Okla., the daughter of John and Ida Doebel Fehring. She grew up in that area, attending Sterling schools and graduating from high school in 1948.

On Oct. 1, 1949, she married Alvin Conway at Sterling. For the next 45 years, she lived on a farm near Oakley, where she helped her husband with the farm and the Grade A dairy they had for years. In 1994, they retired and moved to Grove.

Mrs. Conway was a member of St. Elizabeth Church and Altar Society in Grove, and belonged to St. Joseph's Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all at Oakley.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children, Ron Conway of Holcomb, Don Conway of Dodge City, Jeanne Janzen of Krebs, Okla., Kenny Conway of St. Mary's, Dennis Conway of Garden City, and Patricia "Pat" Waldman of Grinnell; a brother, Richard Fehring of Hastings, Okla.; four sisters, Mary Ann Conway and Evelyn Jacobi, both of Duncan, Okla., Catherine Schettler of Elgin, Okla., and Alice Baldon of Denver; and several grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; her parents; and a brother, Bernard.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Grove, with the Rev. Alex Kennedy officiating. Rosary will be 6 p.m. Sunday at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove.

A second funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley, with the Rev. Roger Meitl officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Oakley.

Visitation hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley. Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Hospice, in care of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home in Grove, or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Oakley, in care of Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home in Oakley.

Donna Marie Hartman

Donna Marie Hartman, 71, of Burlington, Iowa, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Mission Hospital in Mission, Texas.

She was born Sept. 23, 1931, at Columbus, Neb., the daughter of Harold R. and Marie C. Harris.

On Sept. 15, 1956, she married Norman G. Hartman at Burlington.

Mrs. Hartman was a retired real estate agent and a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church in Burlington. A seamstress, she also was an arts and crafts designer, enjoyed cooking and traveling, and spent the winters in Texas.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Ross S. Hartman of Burlington; a daughter, Beth A. Delaney of Garden City; a sister, Brenda Jo Liles of Burlington; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Cremation has taken place. An informal memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at Central Christian Church in McAllen, Texas. A formal memorial service is being planned in April at First Christian Church in Burlington, with the time to be determined later.

Memorials are suggested to the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation, 1413 Lynnwood Drive, Burlington, IA 52601.

Virgil Wilson Mortuary of Mission was in charge of arrangements.

Charles W. Woodring

He was born Feb. 7, 1930, in Waynesboro, Pa., to Jacob and Ada Woodring.

He worked with Gene Lozar doing roofing and enjoyed playing cards, games and music.

He married Bertha Gonzales April 8, 1959, in Guymon, Okla.

He is survived by his wife; four sons Garry McCaughtry of Amarillo, Texas, Raymond Woodring of Topeka, Charles Woodring Jr. of Topeka, and Luiz Woodring of Guymon, Okla.; nine daughters Georgietta McCaughtry of Dodge City, Suzann Chavez of Great Bend, Charlotte Otero of Plainview, Texas; Darlene Lopez and Luella Rodriguez, both of Amarillo, Marylynn Woodring of Dodge City, Ada Delores Woodring of Dodge City, Marcelina Perez of Plainview, Texas; and Guadaupe Mesta of Plainview; two brothers, Dan Woodring of Sacramento, Calif., and Robert Woodring of Waynesboro; one sister, Josephine Shindledecker of Waynesboro; forty-eight grandchildren; and thirty great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Funeral is 10 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses. Darlene Lopez is presiding.

Burial with military graveside rites by Charles B. Hart Post 79 will be in Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.

Friends may call 2 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

William Clark Post

ULYSSES - Funeral for William Clark Post, 84, of Smith Center and formerly of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Simmons Mortuary, Smith Center. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.

Mr. Post, a retired farmer and heavy equipment operator, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003.

He was born Aug. 11, 1918, at Bellaire.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille (Swank) Post of Ulysses; a son, Phillip Post of Ulysses; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association or the donor's choice, both in care of the mortuary, 116. W. First St., Smith Center, KS 66967.

W.K. 'Rusty' Houser

ULYSSES - Funeral for W.K. "Rusty" Houser, 91, will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Barry Durkee officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. CST Monday at Colorado City Cemetery in Colorado City, Colo.

Mr. Houser died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 22, 1911, at Royal, Ark., the son of Charlie and Roxie Rosella Echols Houser.

A longtime Ulysses resident, he was a pipeline foreman for Cities Service Gas Co., working at various locations in Kansas until his retirement in 1976, when he moved to Colorado City. He was a member and ordained deacon of First Baptist Church of Ulysses, and a member of the Masonic Lodge at Colorado City. He enjoyed church work, playing golf, and spending time with his family and friends.

On June 24, 1933, he married Willie Fore Streater at Wewoka, Okla. She died April 13, 1993. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Joyce Graber; a son-in-law; five brothers, Lesley Houser, Roy Houser, Luther Keys, Milton Keys and Pete Keys; and two sisters, Mayda Factor and Lois Sullivan.

On April 24, 1994, he married Nora Virginia McGlohon at Colorado City. She survives. He also is survived by four daughters, Lynda Fagan of Sharps, Fla., Dinah Baker, Jennifer Hawkins and Michelle Lamberson, all of Ulysses; a brother, Clifton Houser of Wewoka; a sister, Ernestine Payne of Shawnee, Okla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Western Prairie Care Home, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Millie Ida Nelson

SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Millie Ida Nelson, 91, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Church Of The Nazarene, Scott City, with the Rev. Loren Edwards officiating. Due to her lifelong battle with polio from the age of 4, she willed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center for research. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Nelson died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Nov. 20, 1911, at Cedardale, Okla., the daughter of Millard Oliver and Minnie Mae Allen Randolph. She graduated in 1932 from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Mo.

A Scott City resident since 1962, moving from Topeka, she was a medical laboratory technician at the Scott City Clinic and the hospital in Scott City from 1964 until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Church Of The Nazarene and belonged to the church's Missionary Society.

On Feb. 10, 1940, she married John M. Nelson at Emporia. He survives. She also is survived by two daughters, Karen Sue Heinrich of Lake George, Colo., and Linda Lue Phelps of Gladstone, Mo.; a son, John M. Nelson of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Everett Randolph.

Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Veda Maude Farmer

CIMARRON - Veda Maude Farmer, 81, of Cimarron, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 28, 1921, at Wellington, the daughter of Arthur R. and Veda E. Swan Curnutt. She attended schools in Wellington.

After living in Houston, she moved to Garden City in 1948. She worked in the laundry department of Western Towel & Uniform in Garden City. A Cimarron resident since 2001, she enjoyed watching sports, bowling, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

On Dec. 28, 1937, she married John P. Farmer at Winfield. He died Jan. 20, 1977. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Lila Ashley and Veda Farmer; two sons, Junious and Rudy; and a grandson, Robert Binns.

She is survived by three daughters, Johnetta Carr of Benbrook, Texas, Judy Renick of Cimarron, and Mary Holzhauser of Dodge City; three sons, Donald and Karl Farmer, both of San Diego, and John Farmer Jr., Sublette; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to The Shepherd's Center or Gray County Emergency Medical Services, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
