Bertha Mary Schultz

Johnson - Graveside service for Bertha Mary Schultz, 96, will be 2 p.m. CST Thursday at Windthorst Cemetery, with the Rev. Louis Trung Hoang as celebrant.

Mrs. Schultz died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.

She was born Aug. 25, 1906, at Windthorst, the daughter of George John and Emma Tasset Peppercorn. She attended high school at St. Mary's of the Plains in Dodge City, graduating in 1925, and was baptized at St. Mary's Church of Windthorst.

On Aug. 17, 1926, she married John Henry Schultz at Spearville. After their three sons were grown, she returned to college where she graduated as a licensed practical nurse. She and her husband lived in Spearville and Wright prior to moving to Phoenix in 1962. He died March 28, 1988. In 1990, she moved to Johnson to live with her son.

A homemaker, Mrs. Schultz enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, embroidery work, knitting, drawing, yoga, collecting plates, and working outside with her flowers and garden.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Robert Anthony Schultz and Franklin D. Schultz; three brothers, Tony, Johnny and George E. Peppercorn; a sister, Johanna Peppercorn; a grandson, Norman Joseph Schultz; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, John Richard "Jack" Schultz of Johnson; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 7 CST tonight at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Johnson, followed by the rosary and vigil service. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

John David Coulter

SYRACUSE - Funeral for John David Coulter, 87, of North Little Rock, Ark., will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Levy United Methodist Church in North Little Rock, with Dr. David Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Hills Mausoleum.

Mr. Coulter died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003.

He was born April 7, 1915, at Lockesburg, Ark., the son of David Burton and Maude Graves Coulter.

A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and served until the end of the war in 1945. He was stationed in Alaska during the Aleutian campaign where he served as a machine gunner on a B-24 bomber. He also worked as a radar operator on Tinian Island in the Marianna Islands.

On Dec. 23, 1945, he married Martha Theesen. Following his marriage, he lived in Ogden and Ashdown, Ark., until 1960. In Ashdown, he owned and operated Coulter Radio and TV Sales and Repair. In early 1960, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Agency at Adams Field in Little Rock, Ark., as an electronic maintenance technician. He worked for the FAA until his retirement.

Mr. Coulter was a former Rotarian, belonged to Levy United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men and was a long-time member of the Disciples Sunday School class. He enjoyed traveling, photography, working in his yard, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by a son, Anthony J. Coulter of Burlington, Ky.; two daughters, Shirley M. Barr of North Little Rock, and Marilyn A. Phillippy of Syracuse; a daughter-in-law; 11 grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Jo Johnson; a son, David B. Coulter; and a granddaughter.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Disciples Sunday School class, both in care of Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock, AR 72116.

Fredrick 'Fred' Greenwood

HOLCOMB - Funeral for Fredrick Santford "Fred" Greenwood, 76, of Eureka and formerly of Holcomb, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka, with the Rev. Larry Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Greenwood died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born May 2, 1926, west of Fall River in Greenwood County, the son of William Rola and Melissa Helen Wormington Greenwood. Growing up in the Severy/Fall River area, he attended Economy and Greenwood Rural School. After his schooling, he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at various jobs after his discharge from the service. In the early 1950s, he began working with Dr. John W. Smith in his veterinary clinic.

On Feb. 4, 1953, he married Kathryn Lewis at Eureka. They made their home in rural Eureka. In the mid-1970s, he began his career in the oil fields with the Maurice L. Brown Co. The job eventually caused the family to move to Holcomb. After his retirement in 1994, he and his wife returned to Eureka.

Mr. Greenwood was a member of Eureka Fidelity Lodge No. 106 A.F. & A.M. and Eureka VFW Post No. 2712 and attended Neal Evangelical Free Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Greenwood of Hamilton, and Larry Greenwood of Eureka; a daughter, Fredda Blakley, Eureka; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Greenwood of Eureka, and Lonnie Lorance of Olathe; and a sister, Wanda Girard of Conway Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are suggested to Neal Evangelical Free Church or Shriner's Children's Hospital, both in care of the funeral home, Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045.

Alan Ray Wilcox

Funeral for Alan Ray Wilcox, 59, a former Garden City resident, was 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Blair, Okla., with the Rev. Randy Mitchell officiating. Burial followed at Blair Cemetery.

Mr. Wilcox, of Blair, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.

He was born Aug. 4, 1943, at Borger, Texas, the son of William Witt and Bethel Elizabeth Wilcox. He attended school in Bovina, Texas, before graduating from Santa Barbara (Calif.) High School. He briefly served in the U.S. Army before receiving a medical discharge.

Mr. Wilcox owned a large trucking business for many years and attended First Baptist Church in Blair. He enjoyed fishing and playing dominos, especially with the boys in the Blair Domino Club. He also enjoyed cooking, traveling in his recreational vehicle, and frequenting various auctions and garage sales.

On June 16, 1978, he married Belinda Wheeler at Clovis, N.M. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Landon Wilcox, who is stationed at the U.S. Air Force Base in Buchel, Germany, and Tanner Wilcox of Blair; three sisters, Wilma June Houston of Montague, Calif., Willa Mae Walters of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Ruby McCormick of Clovis; three brothers, Ike Wilcox of Muleshoe, Texas, Wayne Wilcox of Cohoma, Texas, and Philip Wilcox of Sallisaw, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kincannon Funeral Home, Altus, Okla., was in charge of arrangements.

Mallari Genét Harmon

Johnson CITY - Funeral for Mallari Genét Harmon, 17, of Johnson City, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Mallari died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City.

She was born Jan. 26, 1986, at Ulysses, the daughter of Marc and Kim Beohler Harmon. A junior at Stanton County High School, she participated in various school activities and was involved with the First United Methodist Church Youth in Johnson City. She loved music, school, her friends and family.

She is survived by her father, Johnson City; her mother, Ulysses; three brothers, Cody Harmon and Todd Crow, both of Johnson City, and Chad Harmon of Ulysses; two sisters, Lori Beohler of Garden City, and Jami Harmon of Ulysses; her grandparents, Larry and Shirley Harmon of San Isabel, Colo., Beverly Beohler of Ulysses, and Lynn and Kati Elliott of Sun City, Ariz.; her great-grandparents, Lois Faulds of Ulysses, Bill and Valeda Elliott of Sun City, and William Hawkins of La Junta, Colo.; and two nieces.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials to the Mallari Genét Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

James L. 'Jim' Phoenix

SUBLETTE - Funeral for James L. "Jim" Phoenix, 49, of Sublette, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Revs. Keith Fink and David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Mr. Phoenix died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 8, 1953, at Sublette, the son of John Lester and Lillian May Kramer Phoenix.

A lifetime resident of Sublette, he was known in the community as "Big Jim." He enjoyed staying busy welding, helping those who needed a hand, spending time with his family, and he loved children. He also liked to hunt and enjoyed drag races and Indy/NASCAR races.

Mr. Phoenix had owned Shorty's Bar for nine years, was a farmer, and had worked in maintenance for the City of Sublette for five years. He was a member of the Christian Church and a former member of the Sublette Jaycees.

On Aug. 31, 1974, he married Barbara E. Faurot at Sublette. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Jason Robert and James Matthew Phoenix, both of Lawrence; two brothers, John and Larry Phoenix, both of Sublette; and two sisters, M. Darlene Ash of Afton, Okla., and Marsha D. Collins of Tahlequah, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Dean and Bill Gene Phoenix.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Jennie Lind Moore

Jennie Lind Moore, 98, of Manhattan, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

A former resident of Spearville and Garden City, she was born Nov. 11, 1904, at her parent's home near Spearville. She was the youngest daughter of Jesse and Adda Lopp Braddock, who had homesteaded land in that area several years earlier. She attended a country school in Ford County and later became a teacher in that same country school after earning her teacher's certificate at Fort Hays College.

On June 22, 1924, she married her high school sweetheart, Ora Moore, in Dodge City. They had seven children. Her life was devoted to the care of her husband and children. She also was the caregiver of her parents and her husband's aunt in their later years.

Mrs. Moore was a member of the Minerva Club and First Presbyterian Church in Spearville. After moving to Garden City, she enjoyed an active role in the First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women's Organization, P.E.O. and the Star Club. She enjoyed her family and friends and taking care of her yard.

She spent several years in the home of her youngest daughter, Jane, in Manhattan, and was in the Meadowlark Hills Retirement community in Manhattan for the last two years.

She is survived by her children, Oralee Jones of Gillette, Wyo., Bill Moore of Oklahoma City, Tom Moore of Edmond, Okla., Dick Moore of Marietta, Okla., Jeanette Taylor of Kansas City, Mo., and twins, Jim Moore of Artesia, N.M., and Jane Scoville of Manhattan; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 15, 1979; her parents; her brothers and sisters; and a daughter-in-law.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, with the Rev. R. Cam McConnell officiating. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, with the Rev. Mike Lake officiating.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan or the P.E.O. Sunflower Grant Project, both in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
