Joe Cruz Davila
LEOTI - Joe Cruz Davila, 74, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center at Ponca City, Okla.
He was born Aug. 8, 1928, at Hartland, the son of Miguel G. "Mike" and Helen Cruz Duenez Davila. He graduated from Wichita County High School and from Oklahoma Tech School in Okmulgee, Okla.
A resident of Ponca City since the early 1970s, he was an electrician. He belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church and the American Legion and was a life member of the VFW, all at Ponca City, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
On Jan. 11, 1958, he married Shirley Jackson at Bartlesville, Okla. She survives. He also is survived by four sisters, Carman Enriquez of Garden City, Mary Paredes of Fort Worth, Texas, Juanita Franks and Virginia Terrones, both of Crowley, Colo.; 16 nephews; and 15 nieces. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Cruz Davila and Rudy Cruz Davila.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marienthal, with full military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Joe Davila Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.
Ruth Krentzel
Funeral for Ruth Krentzel, 89, a former area resident, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Londeen Funeral Chapel in Chapman, with the Rev. Kenneth Trickle Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Indian Hill Cemetery
in Chapman.
Mrs. Krentzel died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Geary Community Hospital in Junction City.
She was born June 15, 1913, at Fort Supply, Okla., the daughter of Bert and Elizabeth Willinger Rice. The family moved to Kansas, where she attended rural grade school at Hudson.
On Sept. 21, 1930, she married John Ervin Krentzel at Great Bend. They lived on a farm in Barton County and also had resided at one time at Hudson, St. John, Ulysses and Garden City before moving to Chapman in April 1974. Her husband died July 27, 1974. She lived in Chapman until moving to Abilene in 1994.
Mrs. Krentzel was a lifelong member of the Eagles Auxiliary and also belonged to Church of Christ.
She is survived by a son, Marlin Krentzel of Kimberling City, Mo.; a daughter, Berneice Ashby of Abilene; a sister, Lillie Miller of Lyons; a brother, Albert Rice of Ellinwood; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Leonard; three grandsons; and one great-great-grandson.
Visitation hours are until service time Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association of Kansas, in care of the funeral chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.
Philip J. Powelson
HUGOTON - Philip J. Powelson, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Jan. 29, 1930, at Bucklin, the son of Ronald and Maurine Warner Powelson.
A longtime Hugoton resident, he spent his early years at Stafford, where he graduated from high school. After graduation, he began working for the Santa Fe Railroad. He then joined the U.S. Navy, serving four years during the Korean conflict. He served aboard troop transport, U.S.S. Breckenridge as a radio operator and was decorated as an atomic veteran.
On Nov. 22, 1952, he married Jeanine Hanlin at San Diego. After his time in the service, he and his wife moved to Springfield, Colo., where he resumed his career with the Santa Fe Railroad for nine years. In 1965, he and his family moved to Hugoton, where he began working for the City of Hugoton. He retired after 30 years, having served as the city's building inspector.
Mr. Powelson was active in Black Mesa Bible Camp for more than 13 years, belonged to Hugoton Church of Christ and VFW Post No. 5391 at Hugoton, and was a former board member of "Bible Chair" at Goodwell, Okla. His special interests included music and, most of all, his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Marshall Powelson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Andrea Adee of Boise City, Okla.; his mother, Maurine Harrison of Stafford; a sister, Patricia English of Wichita; two nephews; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; and his stepfather, Chester C. Harrison.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hugoton Church of Christ, with the Rev. Lee Skelton officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to Black Mesa Bible Camp of Boise City or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Patricia Jane Popejoy
Johnson CITY - Patricia Jane Popejoy, 56, of Johnson City, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born Sept. 19, 1946, at Syracuse, the daughter of Raymond Morris and Laura Fern Patton Royer. She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1964 and received a bachelor's degree in psychology from McPherson College in 1968.
On July 4, 1968, she married Jerald Raymond "Jerry" Popejoy at Syracuse.
Throughout her 32 years as a resident of Johnson City, she was a homemaker, Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, infant day care provider and elder caregiver. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Syracuse, collected kaleidoscopes and enjoyed reading the Bible and studying the book of Revelation.
She is survived by her husband of Johnson City; a daughter, Bethanie Fern Popejoy of Syracuse; her twin brother, William Morris Royer of Arcadia, Calif.; two cousins; a sister-in-law; two nieces; two nephews; three great-nieces; and one great-nephew. She was preceded in death by her mother and an aunt.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel officiating. Graveside committal service will follow at Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Tuesday and Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Connie R. Jackson
Funeral for Connie R. Jackson, 46, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Chaplain Michael Lake will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
Miss Jackson died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at her home in Garden City.
She was born March 21, 1946, at Garden City, the daughter of Floyd H. and Betty J. Goff Jackson. Born with Down Syndrome, she attended kindergarten at Holcomb Grade School and also attended Russell Child Development Center and Valentine School. She had been a client at Southwest Developmental Services Inc. for 20 years. Her interests included crafts and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed eating at Golden Corral Restaurant and the many friendships she made there.
Survivors include her mother, Garden City; three brothers, Gerry and Gregory Jackson, both of Garden City, and Donald Jackson of Marion, Iowa; and a sister, Jacalyn Nichols of Copeland. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Millard G. Jantz
CIMARRON - Millard G. Jantz, 82, of Cimarron, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.
He was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Gray County, the son of Reuben T. and Ella Koehn Jantz. He grew up in the Cimarron area, graduating from Cimarron High School in 1938.
Mr. Jantz was a farmer in Gray County for most of his life and also worked as a parts salesman and mechanic for R.L. Walker Sales. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Roberts-Rohrbaugh VFW Post No. 7828 and the Cimarron Golf Club, all at Cimarron, belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the 351st Bomb Group Association, and was a past board member for the USD 102 school district. He served as a radio operator/navigator in the 8th Air Force, 509th Bomb Squadron during World War II.
On March 23, 1943, he married Levon Herron at Cimarron. She died Sept. 18, 2000. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Jantz.
He is survived by two sons, Larry Jantz of Hays and Richard Jantz of Lawrence; two daughters, Anita Ewart and Pam Gleason, both of Cimarron; two brothers, Francis and Leo Jantz, both of Cimarron; a sister, Anna Mae Clark of Wichita; three granddaughters; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Howard Gotschall VFW Post No. 1714 of Dodge City.
Visitation hours are noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to The Shepherd's Center, the church or Cimarron Golf Club, all in care of the funeral home.
Gerald L. Nothdurft
Gerald L. Nothdurft, 72, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 20, 1930, in Cheyenne County, the son of John Henry and Elsie C. Gellerman Nothdurft.
A Garden City resident since 1987, moving from Burlington, Colo., he had been a truck driver, a farm laborer and a mill operator for Finney County Feeders. He was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
On June 5, 1960, he married Georgia L. Hoffman at Goodland.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley D. and Sherry D. Nothdurft, both of Garden City.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside honors presented by Fort Riley Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to First Christian Church or the Beef Empire Days Rodeo Committee, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Gladys Irene Miller
TRIBUNE - Gladys Irene Miller, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
She was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Logan County, the daughter of Charles C. and Lenora W. Marsh Gill.
A homemaker, she had been a Greeley County resident since 1931. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Tribune.
On March 13, 1931, she married Jesse James Miller at Goodland. He died Nov. 16, 1982, at Tribune. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Ann Crook, on Feb. 16, 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Harlan J. and Daryl E. Miller, both of Tribune; two daughters, Juanita J. Grubb of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bernice M. Kenneweg of Fredricksburg, Va.; two brothers, Orville Gill of Huntsville, Ark., and Howard Gill of Colorado Springs; a sister, Charlotte Rathbun of Florissant, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Tribune, with the Revs. Roland Emmonds and Richard Kingham officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.
