John Thomas Lightner

SYRACUSE - John Thomas Lightner, 41, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at his home in Mesquite, Nev., of natural causes.

He was born April 1, 1961, at Cedar City, Utah, the son of Jack Thomas and Bessie Louise Kerns Lightner. He attended schools in the area of Holly, Colo. An avid reader, he enjoyed going for walks, was a talented handyman, and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephew.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Bessie and Harvey Crist, Mesquite; a son, David Urdahl, Phoenix; a sister, Phyllis Cameron, Los Osos, Calif.; a brother, Ron Reitz, Eaton, Colo.; two nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. MST Tuesday in the chapel of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Inurnment will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Wilma Maude Anderson

SUBLETTE - Graveside service for Wilma Maude Anderson, 90, will be 8:30 a.m. Friday at Ulysses Cemetery. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.

Mrs. Anderson, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Satanta District Hospital.

She was born July 22, 1912, in Smith County, the daughter of Owen Earl and Elizabeth Mae Knott Carter.

A Sublette resident since the early 1940s, moving from Ulysses, she had been a resident of Satanta Long Term Care Unit.

On May 18, 1941, she married Alvie Riley Anderson at Clayton, N.M. He died Oct. 18, 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Esther Oneta Ray.

She is survived by a niece, Virgie Mae Logan, Greensburg; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Tommy Lee Bullock

ULYSSES - Tommy Lee Bullock, 61, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Nov. 4, 1941, at Satanta, the son of Thurman Hollis and Lousetta Hampton Bullock.

Mr. Bullock was a farm laborer and belonged to First Baptist Church of Ulysses. A resident of Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses, he enjoyed visiting with the other patients and liked to play bingo and dominoes.

He is survived by a brother, Roy E. Bullock, Syracuse; a sister, Janie Loper-Pierce, Longmont, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Barry Durkee officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. Sunday at Western Prairie Care Home, Ulysses.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Ulysses, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Thomas Roger Malleck

SYRACUSE - Rosary for Thomas Roger Malleck, 64, of Syracuse, will be 7 p.m. Friday at Carpenter Funeral Home in Indianola, Neb. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Nicholas Baker officiating. Burial will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery.

Mr. Malleck died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

He was born Sept. 30, 1938, at Indianola, the son of James John and Genevieve Elizabeth Powers Malleck. He attended Indianola Public Schools, where he graduated from high school in 1957.

In 1958, he married Ona Faye Larson. They had five children. In 2002, he married Sherri McKellips at Syracuse. They resided in Syracuse, where he worked for Dominion Exploration. He enjoyed golfing, most sports, and old cars.

Survivors include his wife, Syracuse; two daughters, Tammy Jo Brewster, Butte, Neb., and Kimberly Barnett, McCook, Neb.; three sons, Michael, Shawn and Brian Malleck, all of Indianola; his stepchildren, Roxie Lee Baker Jr., LePort, Texas, and Sasha Maestas, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Vonda Parrott and Jeannine Reed, both of Lincoln, Neb., Judy Keith and Jane Bahl, both of Indianola; three brothers, Dennis Malleck, Ness City, Lonnie Malleck, Syracuse, and Philip Malleck, Indianola; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Marvin Malleck.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Potter's House, 428 S. 38th St., Omaha, NE 66131-3817 or Lied Transplant Center (Lymphoma/Leukemia), 987680 Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198-7680.

Barbara Jean True

ULYSSES - Barbara Jean True, 66, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

Born Nov. 22, 1934, at Nebraska City, Neb., she was the daughter of Lee and Norma Bates.

She worked for a health care center in Nebraska before moving to Ulysses in 1979. She enjoyed being with her family, cooking, and raising a garden and canning the produce.

On Sept. 4, 1979, she married Sanford Dale True at Ulysses. He preceded her in death as did her parents and a sister, Judy Bates.

She is survived by her companion, Tony Carrillo, Ulysses; six sons, Darrel Ford of Malvern, Ark., Orville Ford of Lincoln, Neb., Gary Ford of Nehawka, Neb., Michael Ford of Galveston, Texas, Dale Ford of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Brian Ford, Lyons, Neb.; four daughters, Linda Wickenkamp of Ollie, Iowa, Barbie Hampton of Ulysses, Karen Smith of McCook, Neb., and Gail Hubbard, Indianola, Neb.; her mother, Helen Fox, Broken Bow, Neb.; five sisters, Norma Lee of Papilian, Neb., Shirley Babe of Truth Or Consequences, N.M., Nancy Hanes of Oklahoma City, Marcella Bauers of Kearney, Neb., and Patty Hicks, Wahoo, Neb.; four half brothers, Sonny Bates of Dunbar, Neb., Charles Bates of Talmage, Neb., Marshal Bates of Nebraska City, Neb., and Lynn Errecson of Lincoln; two half sisters, Julie Henderson of Nebraska City and June Martin of Denver; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses, with the Revs. Kenneth and Alma Lampp officiating.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Susan Irene Gilbert

Mass of Christian burial for Susan Irene Gilbert, 49, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., was to be today at Archdiocese of Denver Mortuary in Wheat Ridge, Colo. Recitation of the rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Mass of Christian burial is also planned at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz, with burial in St. Ann Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilbert, a former Garden City resident, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Iliff Care Center in Denver, after battling cancer.

She was born Aug. 14, 1953, at LaCrosse, the daughter of Lloyd and Irene Kittle Carter.

After graduating from high school at Otis in 1971, she graduated from nursing school at Dodge City. She then lived in Garden City until marrying Terry L. Gilbert on May 26, 1979, at Hugoton. From 1980 to 1988, they lived in Guymon, Okla., where Mrs. Gilbert worked at L & J Auto Parts. From 1988 to 1993, they lived in Flagstaff, Ariz. They lived in Houston from 1993 until moving to Highlands Ranch in 1997.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Matthew, of the home; and her father- and mother-in-law, Ralph and Mary Lou Gilbert of Guymon.

Benjamin Franklin Reynolds

HUGOTON - Benjamin Franklin Reynolds, 94, of Hugoton, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

He was born March 13, 1908, in Stevens County, the son of Levi "Lee" and Mary Etta Brower Reynolds.

A lifetime resident, he was retired from Stevens County Weed Department at Hugoton.

In 1930, he married Mary Louise Brown. She died in 1939. In 1957, he married Mabel Wilson at Clayton, N.M. She died in 1986. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Benny Lee and James Larry Reynolds; a stepdaughter, Loretta Floyd; five brothers, Glen, Harry, Art, Floyd and Marion "Babe" Reynolds; and a half sister, Mayme Patton.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Alice Zuk, Hutchinson; a daughter-in-law, Karen Reynolds, Hugoton; a stepson, Leonard Wilson, Worland, Wyo.; a brother, Don Reynolds, Hugoton; four sisters, Edythe Stuart and Ethyle Reese, both of Hugoton, Viola Quattlebaum, Lamar, Colo., and Zola Lynch, Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Revs. Jeff Aenk and Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the Hugoton Senior Center or Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, both in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Keith A. Appl

LEOTI - Vigil service for Keith A. Appl, 69, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Revs. Benjamin Martin and Michael Helm officiating. Private graveside service will take place later in Kansas City.

Mr. Appl died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.

He was born Dec. 3, 1933, at Leoti.

A lifetime resident of Wichita County, he was a farmer, stockman and businessman. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, a life member of the VFW, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

On Dec. 28, 1957, he married Marilyn Renner at Marienthal. She survives. He also is survived by four sons, Dr. Brad Appl, Prairie Village, Clay Appl, Wichita, Cory and Gunnar Appl, both of Kansas City; a daughter, Allison Stewart, Belle Plaine; a brother, Dale Appl, Leoti; a sister, Katherine Taylor, Scott City; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 5:30 p.m. today at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic Church or Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, both in care of the funeral home.
