Lawrence Smithson
Funeral for Lawrence Smithson, 106, a former area resident, will be Wednesday at Chilhowee (Mo.) United Methodist Church, with burial at Warrensburg, Mo.
Mr. Smithson died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg.
He was born Oct. 16, 1896, at Aurora, Ark., the son of Albert and Edith Taylor Smithson.
He moved from Oklahoma to the Pierceville community in 1916. A farmer and stockman, he raised registered cattle, was a lifelong Methodist and a World War I veteran.
In 1923, he married Bertha Nunn. They moved to Missouri in 1935. She died in 1969. In 1976, he married Hazel Snodgrass at Garden City. They maintained homes in Garden City and Chilhowee. She died in 1996. He also was preceded in death by a son, a brother and four sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Welch, Independence, Mo.; a daughter-in-law; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and two nieces.
Gladys Bond
Gladys Bond, 92, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Feb. 4, 1910, at Humansville, Mo., the daughter of Henry Logan and Dora Chapman Ball. The family moved to the Kalvesta area when she was young. She attended rural schools near Kalvesta, graduating from Cimarron High School in 1929.
On June 8, 1930, she married Otis Daniel Bond at Kalvesta. They lived in the Kalvesta area before moving to Garden City in 1975. A homemaker, Mrs. Bond enjoyed taking care of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene and the Senior Center of Finney County.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Richard Bond of Oklahoma City, and Larry Bond, Manhattan Beach, Calif.; four daughters, Arlene Snowbarger of Emporia, Donna Burns of Cimarron, Eleanor Hoover of Olivia, Texas, and Maxine Neufeld, Ingalls; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Vernon Ball; a sister, Leona Bond; two grandchildren, Marlene Snowbarger Bridgman and Kevin Neufeld; and a great-granddaughter, Jenae Wilson.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nazarene, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village or Church of the Nazarene, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Carl E. Metzger
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Carl E. Metzger, 87, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Metzger died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Aug. 1, 1915, at Springfield, Neb., the son of Benjamin G. and Emma Mae Ball Metzger.
A Scott City resident since 1951, moving from Great Bend, he was the owner and operator of Wheatbelt Implement in Scott City for 45 years and was a farmer and cattle stockman. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Scott City Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge and the Kansas Livestock Association, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On July 3, 1943, he married Irene Kasselman at Kansas City, Mo. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Ronald Metzger of Medford, Ore., and David Metzger, Scott City; a daughter, Joyce Baker, Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one nephew; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Scott County Health Care Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.
Thomas Anthony Gallardo
Vigil service for Thomas Anthony Gallardo, 18, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating, assisted by Martin Hermosillo, deacon. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Gallardo died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home in Kansas City, Kan., from injuries suffered while lifting weights.
He was born Jan. 8, 1985, at Garden City, the son of Pedro Juarez and Anna Marie Ramirez Gallardo. He grew up in Garden City, attended St. Mary School, Abe Hubert Middle School and Garden City High School, and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
On Nov. 26, 2002, he graduated with high honors with a high school diploma from Flint Hill Job Corp in Manhattan. He then moved to Kansas City, Kan., and was a certified nurse aide and home health nurse aide. His hobbies were weight lifting, listening to music, playing pool and being with his family and friends.
He is survived by his parents, Garden City; a brother, Adam Gallardo, Garden City; a niece; his grandparents, Manuel and Maria Elena Ramirez, Garden City; his great-grandmother, Josephine Willars, Marlin, Texas; and numerous uncles, aunts, great-uncles, great-aunts and cousins.

Edward D. Vermes
ULYSSES - Edward D. Vermes, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Dec. 6, 1917, at Sandoval, Ill., the son of Joseph and Lula Peters Vermes. He graduated from Blackburn College and the University of Illinois with two degrees in education.
After 24 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, he taught science at a private military high school in Virginia until his retirement in 1965. A Ulysses resident since 1989, he was a member of Ulysses Masonic Lodge No. 435, Ulysses Eastern Star No. 471 and Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79.
On Sept. 28, 1943, he married Marcella B. Burnham at Pleasant Hill, Ohio. She died Nov. 6, 2001. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Louise.
Survivors include two sons, Edward D. Vermes Jr. of La Crosse, Wis., and Joseph Robert Vermes, Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Martha Hamilton, Fort Pierce, Fla.; and a sister, Rena, Denver.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Hart Post No. 79.

Gertrude Sadler
DIGHTON - Funeral for Gertrude Sadler, 93, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Ben Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Sadler died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Dec. 18, 1909, at Kirby, Ark., the daughter of Walter D. and Margie E. Fricks Keen.
On Feb. 12, 1927, she married Charles L. Sadler at Anadarko, Okla. They lived in Illinois, later moved to Arkansas and then to Lane County in 1945. Her husband died Jan. 19, 1961. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marilyn Batterton; a grandson, Randy Son; two granddaughters, Ellen Bee Sadler and Carol Jean Bruner; two brothers, Guy Edward Keen and Emmett Dean Keen; and one sister, Floy Jean Terhune.
Mrs. Sadler worked as a dietary aide at Lane County Hospital and was a member of First Christian Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 190. Her special interests were playing cards, bingo, growing and sharing her flowers from her garden, and bird watching.
She is survived by a son, Earl Sadler, Macon, Ill.; six daughters, Margie Son of York, Neb., Helen Bruner of Healy, Pearl Hunt of Leoti, Betty Fullmer of Shields, Reba White of Scott City, and Ginny Kadyk of Shawnee; a sister, Reba Black, Scott City; 29 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Angel Marie Richman
Angel Marie Richman, the infant daughter of Michael and Lisa Shrimplin Richman of Overland Park, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, John and Kate Shrimplin, Sublette; her great-grandparents, Irene Richman, Buelah Clayton, and Arthur and Lois Shrimplin Davis, all of Garden City, and Evelyn and Donald Pike, Holcomb; and several aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kathy and Jesse Richman; and her great-grandparents, William Richman, Roy Clayton and Eldon Shrimplin.
Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fellowship Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Dan Pearce officiating.
Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements.
Pauline Faye Crowley
DIGHTON - Pauline Faye Crowley, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at the Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.
She was born Oct. 28, 1923, in Stafford County, the daughter of James Pleasant and Leah Elizabeth Keesling Lofland. The family moved to a farm in Barton County when she was young. She attended school in Great Bend, graduating from Great Bend High School.
On Dec. 7, 1945, she married Elmer W. "Jiggs" Crowley at St. John. After their marriage, they lived in Great Bend before moving to Dighton in 1948. He died July 8, 2002. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Arthur Lofland; and a sister, Elsie Hiss.
While raising her own family, Mrs. Crowley baby-sat for many of the area children. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton and American Legion Post No. 190 Auxiliary. An active member in the community, she worked in the nursery each Sunday for more than 20 years at the United Methodist Church, took care of the auxiliary's thrift shop and cooked at Dighton High School. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, canning the produce she raised from her large garden each year, loved her chickens and enjoyed preparing meals for visiting family members.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris Lee Iarossi, Topeka; four sons, Ellsworth Crowley of Amarillo, Texas, W. Leon Crowley of Mobridge, S.D., Gary and Kim Crowley, both of Dighton; a brother, James Lofland, Great Bend; four sisters, Alice Biskeborn of Bremington, Wash., Letha Luther of Hays, Darlene Unruh of Liberal, and Mamie DuBois of Almeda; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
