Vernon Lee Armantrout

Funeral for Vernon Lee Armantrout, 80, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.

Mr. Armantrout died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 24, 1922, at Amy, the son of John H. and Katherine Gregor Armantrout.

After graduating from Dighton High School in 1943, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in Greenland and Cuba. After his discharge, he worked in the oil fields for many years. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator and had worked at Brookover Ranch Feedyard for the past 15 years.

Mr. Armantrout had lived in Garden City from 1947 until moving to Florence in 1966. He returned to Garden City in 1978. He was a member of the Baptist faith and enjoyed collecting keyrings and caps, painting, fishing, camping and his family activities.

On June 28, 1944, he married Leona Rich. On April 1, 1972, he married Emilie Schambron at Florence. She died Aug. 9, 1996. He also was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, two grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He is survived by four daughters, Verna Dreiling, Garden City, Sophia Hall, Beloit, JoAnn Beloite, Ulysses, and Emilie Ann Whitcomb, Shawmut, Mont.; three sons, Freddie Armantrout, Naples, Fla., Roy Hager and Warren Hager, both of Florence; a sister, Barbara Davalt, Denver; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Roberta Ann Gray

Roberta Ann Gray, 45, of Larned, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned.

She was born April 14, 1957, at Shawnee, Okla., the daughter of Robert Eugene and Abeliene Yott Gray.

A Larned resident since 2000, formerly of Hays, she was of the Christian faith and had been baptized at First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City.

She is survived by a daughter, Anna-Marie Gray, Hays; a son, Aron Gray, Larned; three sisters, Linda Ryan, San Angelo, Texas, Alice Sohrweid, Colorado City, Texas, and Juanita Lee, Hobbs, N.M.; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Dean Page.

A memorial service is planned for later in Garden City. Cremation is planned, with Morell Funeral Home of Larned in charge of arrangements.

Ronald D. Hambrick

Johnson CITY - Ronald D. Hambrick, 44, of Johnson, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson City.

He was born Oct. 27, 1958, at Hobbs, N.M., the son of Whit Windell and Alice Faye Caldwell Hambrick. He graduated from Stanton County High School in 1977, attended Pittsburgh State for two years, and earned a bachelor's degree in mortuary science from Central State University, Edmond, Okla., in 1983.

A funeral director and embalmer, Mr. Hambrick had worked at Phillips Mortuary in Ulysses and as manager of Runyan-Stevenson-Capitol Funeral Home in Denver, and was a member of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association. He served in Garden City and Liberal as a job placement specialist for KETCH, a major project of the Kansas Elks Association, finding jobs for people with disabilities.

He is survived by a son, Christopher Hambrick, stationed at Honolulu; his parents, Johnson; two brothers, Windell Laran Hambrick, Wichita, and Kenneth Hambrick, Verona, Ky.; his grandparents, Hubert Caldwell, Johnson, and Whit and Maggie Richardson Hambrick, Kirtland, N.M.; a nephew; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by a sister, DeLisa Hambrick, in 1982; and his grandmother, Thelma Caldwell, in 1986.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the church or KETCH, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

Rosalie S. St. John

LEOTI - Rosalie S. St. John, 85, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born March 20, 1917, in Lyon County, the daughter of Van Every and Itis Blackwell Spade.

A Leoti resident since 1946, moving from Ordway, Colo., she was a homemaker. She belonged to the Presbyterian Church and was a 49-year member of Rebekah Lodge, both at Leoti.

On March 6, 1936, she married Albert S. St. John at Council Grove. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Don St. John, Leoti; a daughter, Sherry Fry, Estes Park, Colo.; a brother, Erin Spade, Wichita; two sisters, Loy West, Emporia, and Vada Harmon, Ordway; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters.

Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Roland Emond officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Amusement Association or the Presbyterian Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Helen A. Kysar

LAKIN - Funeral for Helen A. Kysar, 96, will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Warren Hett officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Kysar died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born Aug. 29, 1906, at Salem, Ore., the daughter of John and Anna deVries Grusing. When she was young, the family moved to Kearny County. She attended Kearny County Country School (Eureka Grade School), graduated from Lakin High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

She taught school in Kearny County before marrying Preston A. Kysar on Feb. 9, 1930, in northern Kearny County. They moved to Ellis County, where they lived from 1930 to 1934. They then returned to the Lydia area in Kearny County and moved into Lakin in 1971.

A homemaker, Mrs. Kysar enjoyed growing flowers, doing crossword puzzles, quilting, sewing, playing the piano, rock hunting, cooking and writing poetry. She attended Lakin United Methodist Church since moving to Lakin, was a member of Lydia United Methodist Church in Kearny County, was a Sunday School teacher for many years, belonged to United Methodist Women and was a Bible School teacher. She was a 50-year member of the Home Demonstration Unit and had served as a 4-H leader for many years.

Her husband died Sept. 25, 1978. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marjorie Eskelund; six brothers, Dave Grusing, the Rev. Herman Grusing, Ed Grusing, Ben Grusing, Wes Grusing and the Rev. Henry Grusing; and two sisters, the Revs. Grace Grusing and Martha Brown.

She is survived by a son, Ken Kysar, Lakin; two daughters, Dorothy Jenks, Lakin, and Florence Boyd, Hurst, Texas; a brother, Louis Grusing, Denver; three sisters, Alice Geyer, WaKeeney, Clara Warrington, Kendall, and Edith Litton, Lakin; two sisters-in-law, Vandella Grusing, Leoti, and Mabel Grusing, Lakin; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Lydia United Methodist Church or Kearny County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Richard 'Raymond' Ehmke

Memorial service for Richard "Raymond" Ehmke, 85, of Coffeyville, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will take place later.

Mr. Ehmke died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born July 10, 1917, on the family farm at Amy, the son of Henry and Dorothea Schierenbeck Ehmke. He attended schools in Lane County.

On April 4, 1945, he married Eva Delilah Thomas at Denver. After their marriage, they moved to Dighton where he farmed with his brothers and was a Lane County champion shocker. They owned and operated the Chapel Lane Motel in Dighton for 35 years.

His wife died Dec. 18, 1988. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Phillip, in 2001; two brothers, Herman and August "Buster" Ehmke; and a sister, Alice Reifschneider.

Mr. Ehmke had been a resident of Windsor Place since moving to Coffeyville in 1998. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Dighton and St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Coffeyville.

He is survived by three daughters, Teresa Ehmke, Dighton, Joyce Baker and Christina Ehmke, both of Garden City; a brother, Charles Ehmke, Lake Charles, La.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.

Regina M. 'Peggy' Moore

Parish vigil service for Regina M. "Peggy" Moore, 88, of Hays, will be 5:30 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays, with the Rev. David Metz officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Mrs. Moore died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Hays Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident since October.

She was born May 8, 1914, at Yocemento, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Lang Rupp. She graduated from Girls Catholic High School in Hays in 1933.

Mrs. Moore had worked as a waitress at Al's Chickenette, Ted's Steakhouse and Mar's Restaurant prior to her retirement. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and was formerly active as a volunteer in the Boy Scouts program.

On Feb. 11, 1941, she married Richard Moore at Hays. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, Richard Moore Jr., Garden City, and Eldon J. Moore, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Marla J. Moore, Gilbert, Ariz.; a sister, Rose Augustine, Hays; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Ralph and Earl Rupp; and two sisters, Mary Ann Neely and Evelyn Karlin.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Building Fund or the donor's choice, both in care of the chapel, Box 86, Hays, KS 67601.

Juanita C. Propst

Juanita C. Propst, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 23, 1913, at Shawnee Town, Ill., the daughter of Elzie and Ella May Hart Smith.

A Garden City resident since 1998, moving from Westerville, Ohio, she had been an office manager for A.G.C. Contractors in St. Louis for many years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Garden City.

She married Andrew Propst in St. Louis. He died in 1973. She also was preceded in death by a son, Larry Propst.

Survivors include a sister, Wanda Pendegrass, Garden City; a brother, John Smith, St. Louis; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Kings Highway Baptist Church in St. Louis, with the Rev. Paul Powell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis.

Visitation hours are until 5 p.m. today at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Kings Highway Baptist Church of St. Louis, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
