Arthur M. Kjergaard
ELKHART - Funeral for Arthur M. Kjergaard, 74, will be 4 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart, with the Rev. Jim Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Elkhart Area Veterans Honor Guard Post No. 3162.
Mr. Kjergaard died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.
He was born June 16, 1928, at Bruce, Minn., the son of Albert and Gladys Johnson Kjergaard. He grew up in Bruce and at Rowena, S.D., where he graduated from high school. He then attended Tampa College in Florida, where he earned his associate's degree.
A retired U.S. Navy Corpman, he served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After his service in the military, he spent his time as a director of laboratories for various hospitals, including in Kansas, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. He actively volunteered for numerous school-related activities at St. Petersburgh, Fla., and also was active in foster-parenting in Florida, Missouri and Kansas.
Mr. Kjergaard was a member of D.A.V., the American Society of Medical Technologists, VFW of Elkhart and the Fleet Reserve Association. A strong believer in education and family, his special interests included bowling, fishing and being an avid collector.
On Sept. 16, 1955, he married Verna Lee Oliver in Great Lakes, Ill. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Mel Kjergaard, Denver; two daughters, Valerie Thrall and Krista Golay, both of Elkhart; two brothers, Hans and Marvin Kjergaard, both of South Dakota; and three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Elkhart Elementary School, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
Hester L. Kendall
INGALLS - Hester L. Kendall, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at The Shepherd's Center in Cimarron.
She was born Feb. 17, 1914, in a sod home in Gray County, the daughter of Wyman Phillip Henry and Mary Harris Kent.
A lifetime resident of Gray County, she was the librarian for the Ingalls Public Library for 25 years. She was a member of Ingalls Community Bible Church and the Gray County Museum Board and served on the Election Board at Ingalls.
On May 17, 1932, she married John O. Kendall at Garden City. He died Dec. 9, 1976. She also was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Estella Bergen.
She is survived by a son, Wayne Kendall, Ingalls; a brother, Edward Kent, Woodland, Wash.; three sisters, Clara Stanley, Castle Rock, Wash., Viola Dyer, Toledo, Wash., and Minnie Driscol, Kelso, Wash.; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Ingalls Community Bible Church, with the Rev. Mike Whalen officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 8:30 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice, both in care of Burkhart-Ziegler's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.
Eddie R. Blizzard
'Snowman'
Funeral for Eddie R. Blizzard, 48, of Pueblo, Colo., was Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Park Hill Christian Church in Pueblo.
Mr. Blizzard died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, after suffering a massive heart attack at his home. He had battled heart problems for 14 years.
Born April 11, 1954, in Colorado Springs, Colo., he grew up in Pueblo. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served one year in Germany.
After moving to Garden City in 1980, he met Ruth (Hahn) Bemis. After their marriage, they had a daughter, Erika Lynn, in 1981.
Mr. Blizzard, who was well known on the CB radio as "Snowman," was a long haul truck driver, did maintenance work at IBP and also had various other jobs. He enjoyed fishing, camping, barbecuing and his two poodles.
He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Erika Clark, Garden City; his parents, Betty and Ernest Looker, Pueblo; his fiancée, JoAnn Gunther, Pueblo; three brothers, Lee Blizzard, Denver, Ishmael "Barry" Benzakki of Georgia and Ernie Looker, Pueblo; four sisters, Debra Burtram of Arkansas, Beverly Snyder, Colorado Springs, Alicia Pacheco, Garden City, and Sue Nicholai, Olathe; three stepchildren, Ron Bemis, John Bemis and Melissa Garcia, all of Garden City; and seven stepgrandchildren of Garden City. His first grandchild is due in March 2003.

Betty J. Day
TRIBUNE - Betty J. Day, 64, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at her home in Dodge City.
She was born July 23, 1938, at Dodge City, the daughter of Everett Leslie Gaul and Mildred Elizabeth Marine. She graduated from Ford High School in 1956.
On Feb. 3, 1957, she married James R. "Bob" Day at Dillon, S.C. Since their marriage, they have lived in Dodge City and Hodgeman County. She worked with her husband and son in the family business, Bob Day Sandblasting, and also worked at Something Special in Dodge City.
A homemaker, Mrs. Day was a 40-year member of the Kansas Women's Bowling Association, belonged to the VFW Women's Auxiliary of Dodge City, and enjoyed bowling, antiques, playing bingo and spending time with her granddaughter.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Bruce Day, Dodge City; four sisters, Lois Crego, Wellington, Colo., Donna Hensley of Ford, Sharon Steele, Tribune, and Patty Dome, Dodge City; two brothers, Sonny Gaul, Newton, and Harold Gaul, Denver; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Vernon.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with Jeff Hiers officiating.
The register book may be signed 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie, in care of the funeral home.
Gene Roger Corn
Funeral for Gene Roger Corn, 80, of Salina, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, Salina. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina.
Mr. Corn died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002.
He was born April 29, 1922, at Marion.
He had owned Fast-One Hour Dry Cleaners until retiring in 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Oletha M. Corn; two sons, Gary G. Corn, Abilene, and Fred J. Corn, Salina; two daughters, Dana L. Schaich, Abilene, and Cynthia A. Hilt, Garden City; a brother, Ralph Corn, Andover; two sisters, Francis Hada, Tulsa, Okla., and Helen Shelton, St. Louis; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Roselawn Mortuary, Salina, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary, 1307 S. Santa Fe, Salina, KS 67401.
Natalie Dickerson
Natalie Dickerson, 74, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at her home in Garden City, following a long bout with cancer.
She was born Aug. 20, 1928, at Chicago, the daughter of Thomas and Sofia Popovich Spasovich. She graduated from Arlington Heights (Ill.) High School.
A Garden City resident since 1952, she worked as a legal secretary for Dale Corley, as secretary of the Garden City Country Club, as the first secretary of Southwind Country Club and later as a secretary at Plaza Medical Center. She was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church and Southwind Country Club, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing golf, traveling and playing cards.
On Aug. 20, 1950, she married John W. Dickerson at Chicago. He died July 4, 2001. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lou and Wally Spasovich.
She is survived by a daughter, Laurie Holmes, Dexter; a son, Michael Dickerson, Olathe; her mother-in-law; two brothers, Tom Spasovich, Chicago, and Al Spasovich, Capron, Ill.; two sisters, Rose Chuck, Chicago, and Ann Gossett, Capron; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Garden City Community College Endowment Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Harold A. 'Hal' Hedlund
MONTEZUMA - Funeral for Harold A. "Hal" Hedlund, 80, of Montezuma, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Montezuma United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.
Mr. Hedlund died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
He was born Sept. 12, 1922, at Jefferson, Iowa, the son of Albert Harold Hedlund and Elizabeth English. When he was young, he moved to Montezuma. He graduated from Montezuma High School and from Northwestern University of Chicago before entering the U.S. Air Corps, where he was a B26 bomber pilot. He then entered the entertainment business.
On Oct. 7, 1945, he married Zoa McReynolds at Montezuma. They returned to Montezuma in 1953, and he began working for Montezuma State Bank, working there for 49 years. He was the retired chief executive officer of the bank and was chairman emeritus at the time of his death.
Mr. Hedlund was a member of Montezuma United Methodist Church, Montezuma Lions Club, American Legion and various banking organizations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Chris Hedlund, Fountain Hills, Ariz., Kyle Hedlund, Gilbert, Ariz., Ty and Derk Hedlund, both of Montezuma; a sister, Edna Sammons, Larned; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one great-grandchild.

Rosie R. Schmidt
MONTEZUMA - Memorial service for Rosie R. Schmidt, 80, of Montezuma, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Community Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Lyn Hansen officiating. Private burial took place in Morningside Cemetery, Montezuma.
Mrs. Schmidt died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City, where she had been a resident.
She was born Dec. 27, 1921, at Lager Lechfeld, Augsburg, Germany, the daughter of John and Anna Penner Miller. She moved from Germany to Montezuma on Dec. 25, 1925.
A homemaker, she had worked for the Post Office in Montezuma for five years and at the Christian Bookhouse in Dodge City for five years. She was a member of Morningside Community Church, taught Sunday School for 40 years without missing a Sunday, and was active in child evangelism and Children's Bible Schools and camps.
On Aug. 4, 1940, she married Ervin Schmidt at Montezuma. He died Oct. 1, 1971. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Fred E. Schmidt, on July 21, 2002; two infant brothers and one infant sister in Russia; and a brother, Jacob Miller.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Buller, Montezuma, and Mary Fast, Seattle; a daughter-in-law; a brother, John Miller, Fort Pierce, Fla.; a sister, Sarah Kingston, Derby; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
