LeRoy Fast
Funeral for LeRoy Fast, 69, of Hooker, Okla., will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gospel of Grace Church, Hooker, with the Rev. Odie Nunley officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Iuka Cemetery, Iuka, with the Rev. Scott Buller officiating.
Mr. Fast died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Dec. 14, 1932, in rural Hooker, the son of Clarence and Nellie Loewen Fast. He attended school in Adams, Okla., graduating from Adams High School in 1951. He then attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Okla., graduating with a degree in 1955. He then entered the U.S. Air Force, serving for two years.
Mr. Fast operated as a fertilizer distributor for many years and later was a truck driver, driving for Spike's Trucking of Moscow.
He married Velma Spiegel. She preceded him in death. Feb. 14, 1970, he married Evelyn Marie DeRome at Adams. She died Dec. 17, 1996.
He is survived by two stepsons, Marvin Dow, Loganville, Ga., and Michael Dow, Laretto, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Rita Mead, Pratt; and a sister, Alberta Mouser, Garden City.
Memorials are suggested to any local animal shelter or humane society.

Catherine Jean Hicks
LIBERAL - Catherine Jean Hicks, 51, of Liberal, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at her home in Liberal.
She was born Jan. 21, 1951, in Garden City to Alfred A. and Louise Dreher.
She married Ralph Hicks on April 4, 1981, in Wichita. They moved from Phillipsburg to Liberal in 1988. A homemaker, she loved her family and enjoyed being with them. She had many hobbies including crocheting, needlework and making crafts.
Survivors include her husband, three sisters, Jackie Hoag, El Dorado, Nancy Gordon, Albuquerque, N.M., Teresa Kralachec, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, M.C. Hicks, El Dorado; a stepdaughter, Edi Logan, of El Dorado; a stepbrother, Harold Stout, Park City; three grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Alfred A. Dreher Jr.; and a stepson-in-law, David Logan.
Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Christian Heritage Church, 701 S. Pershing St., in Liberal, with Todd Barnett presiding.
Haskell County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Friends may sign the registrar 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Harold C. Rubendall
SUBLETTE - Harold C. Rubendall, 79, of Baldwin City died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at Baldwin City Care Center.
His funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Sublette, with the Rev. Keith Fink officiating.
He was born April 14, 1923, in Oberlin to George Merrell and Ruby Irene Rubendall.
He grew up in Oberlin, where he attended school through eighth grade. He moved with his family to Coldwater, where he graduated from high school and was a member of National Honor Society. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. In the service, he flew 25 missions and received a good conduct medal. He also was awarded the air medal with two oak leaf clusters and three battle stars.
He married Eva Mae Cronenberg March 21, 1945, in Pueblo, Colo. After his time in the military, they moved to Garden City, where they lived until 1955 before moving to Sublette. They lived there until moving to Baldwin City in 1998. He worked for Helmrick and Payne Gas Co. for 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, guns, coin collecting and bowling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Survivors include a son, Darold Rubendall, Shawnee Mission; two daughters, Shirley Messenger, Grove, Okla., Judy Dunn, Baldwin City; a brother, Donnie of Indiana; a sister, Phyllis Fisher of Alva, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Rodena "Dena" Schultz Pelnar
McPHERSON - Rodena "Dena" Schultz Pelnar, 67, of McPherson died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at the Via Christi St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
She was born Dec. 13, 1934, to Harry Schultz and Mae Margratha Voss.
She was married to George Pelnar March 6, 1955, in Wichita. She graduated from Billings High School in Billings, Okla.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, George and Mark, both of McPherson; two daughters, Barbara Walker of Cherryvale and Denise Pelnar of McPherson; six brothers, Harry Schultz of Ponca City, Okla., Cleo Schultz of Wagner, Okla., Roy Schultz of Lafayette, Ind., John Schultz, Ponca City, Okla., Steve Schultz, Red Rock, Okla., and Darrel Schultz, Ponca City, Okla.; three sisters, Kay Hudgens of Tulsa, Okla., Joyce Deboard, Blackwell, Okla., and Naomi Schultz, Ponca City, Okla.; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Crossroads Assembly of God in McPherson, with Pastor David Case officiating.

Julia Ann Wewer
Julia Ann Wewer, 63, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born May 17, 1939, in Beloit to Delbert and Mary Nelswanger Gentry.
She was a Garden City resident since 1987, moving from Salina. She worked at Wal-Mart and was involved in the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and Women of the Moose in Garden City.
Survivors include one son, Eugene Smith, Yuma, Ariz.; two daughters, Debra Rupke, Hays, and Dawn Weber, Scott City; one sister, Mary Wasmer, Salina; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Delbert and Bobby.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Scott City, with the Rev. Deanna Fluck officiating. A graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Mt. Allen Cemetery
in Hays.

Edgar E. Routon
Funeral for Edgar E. Routon will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home in Wichita.
Routon, 87, of Andover died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.
He was born May 16, 1915, in Texas, the son of Theophilus E. Routon and Florence (Doss) Routon. He was the owner of E.E. Routon Construction and a veteran of World War II from the U.S. Air Force's Flying Tigers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Edgar E. Routon, Jr.; and a grandson, Joshua E. Routon.
He is survived by his wife, Nina; a son, Tim Routon, Garden City; two daughters, Nina Schwerdtfeger, Andover, and Karen Libs, Lansing, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He will be interred in the Lakeview mausoleum, also in Wichita.
Roena S. Helmbold
TRIBUNE - Funeral for Roena S. Helmbold, 81, will be 10:30 a.m. MST Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Gary Gooding officiating. Graveside service will be 9 a.m. CST Saturday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bluff City, with the Rev. Peter Mac Kinney officiating.
Mrs. Helmbold died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
She was born June 8, 1921, at Freeport, the daughter of Thomas Grant and Swanhild Miller Roe.
Mrs. Helmbold had been a Greeley County resident since 1957. A farmer and rancher, she was the owner and operator of Helmbold's Store in Horace from 1975 to 1993. She was a homemaker and belonged to the First United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary No. 7521 and the Greeley County Historical Society, all at Tribune, and served on the board of directors of the Kuder Senior Center in Tribune.
On June 15, 1940, she married Merle Helmbold at Bluff City. He died Aug. 2, 1992, at Wichita. She also was preceded in death by an infant son and four brothers.
Survivors include a son, Ray Lee Helmbold, Tribune; a daughter, Trula Harris, New Cambria; and two grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to the Greeley County Emergency Medical Technicians, Greeley County Hospital or the Kuder Senior Center, all in care of the funeral home.
Rex K. Megaffin
Parish vigil service for Rex K. Megaffin, 32, of Plainville and formerly of Osborne, will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Plainville, with the Rev. Joseph Popelka officiating. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, Osborne, with the Revs. Popelka and Ron Yarnell officiating. Cremation is planned, with inurnment in Osborne Cemetery.
Mr. Megaffin died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at his home in Plainville.
He was born Oct. 2, 1970, at Osborne, the son of Scott and Mildred Pottberg Megaffin. He graduated from Osborne High School in 1989 and attended Fort Hays State University.
Mr. Megaffin was an assistant basketball coach for Osborne High School for two years and later coached his sons' baseball league in Plainville. He had farmed with his father in Osborne until accepting the position of purchasing agent for Wilkens Manufacturing in Stockton. An avid sports enthusiast, he enjoyed golfing, baseball, football and basketball, especially the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas State University.
On Jan. 8, 1994, he married Lisa Wilkens at Osborne. She survives. He also is survived by his sons, Kade Scott, Max Thomas and Trae Kelly Megaffin, all of the home; his parents of Osborne; a brother, Terry, Atwood; two sisters, Cheryl Schmale, Garden City, and Jodi Cockerham, Osborne; his grandfather and stepgrandmother, Kenneth and Mary Pottberg; and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two grandmothers and one grandfather.
Friends may sign the memorial book from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel in Plainville. Memorials are suggested to an education fund for his sons, in care of the funeral chapel, 409 S. Cochran, Plainville, KS 67663.
