Cleta Lorene Flora
Cleta Lorene Flora, 83, of Emporia, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.
She was born Jan. 15, 1919, at Norton, the daughter of Lansford Olaf and Inez Hager Lesh.
Mrs. Flora was retired after working for many years as a secretary for the Garden City public schools. She was a member of First Christian Church of Emporia.
On April 20, 1947, she married Howard Galen Flora at Hays. He survives. She also is survived by three sons, Jeffery H. Flora, Leawood, Douglas L. Flora, Kansas City, Mo., and Jonathan C. Flora, Northville, Mich.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald and Eldon Lesh; and a sister, Patsy Dye.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, with the Rev. Dale Pracht officiating. Cremation has taken place, with inurnment to be in Quinter Cemetery, Quinter.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hand In Hand Hospice, in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, 605 State St., Emporia, KS 66801.
Jimmie R. Robertson
Jimmie R. Robertson, 77, of Wilson, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Nov. 14, 1925, at Four Corners, Texas, the son of Elmer A. and Lavina J. "Dolly" Reed Robertson.
A Wilson resident since December 1992, moving from Garden City, he was an electrician. He was a member of the VFW and the Masonic Lodge and was a chief petty officer with the Navy Seabees during World War II.
On Aug. 25, 1953, he married Joanne Smith at DeQueen, Ark. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Samie D. Robertson, Henrietta, N.C.; a daughter, Jimmie Anne Owings, Garden City; a sister, Alene Copeland, Tomball, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott Lee Robertson; a sister, Etta L. Cummons; and a brother, Paul E. Robertson.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Al's Dining Area-West Side at Wilson. Inurnment will take place later.

Herbert N. 'Herb' Gillen
ULYSSES - Herbert N. "Herb" Gillen, 77, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at his home in Ulysses.
He was born Aug. 21, 1925, at Canon City, Colo., the son of Marion Timothy and Martha Viola Benson Gillen.
Mr. Gillen had a master's degree in music education. He taught at Bloom for four years, at Ford for four years, and at Ulysses from the fall of 1957 to the spring of 1985, when he retired as a band instructor. He was the owner and operator of Gillen Tax Service at Ulysses.
He was a member of Ulysses Mennonite Brethren Church and Cornerstone Bible Church, both at Ulysses, was an Adult Sunday School teacher for many years and conducted a Bible Study group at his home every week. He also belonged to the Kansas Music Educators Association, was a past Silver-Haired Legislator, branch manager of Southwest Government Employees Credit Union, past insurance adjuster for the Mennonite Property Aid Association, former choir director for the Christian Church, and former secretary-treasurer for the Ulysses Bowling League. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as an air traffic controller in the Pacific Theater, was a ham radio operator and enjoyed computers, model airplanes and bowling.
On Aug. 30, 1948, he married Lorina M. Witty at Adrian, Ore. She survives.
He also is survived by three sons, Bruce Gillen, Edgewood, N.M., Richard Gillen, Ontario, Ore., and John Gillen, Ulysses; four daughters, Barbara Moore, Farmington, N.M., Colleen Harms, Ulysses, Alice Borja, North Glenn, Colo., and Shari Howard, Las Cruces, N.M.; a brother, Jimmy Gillen, Longmont, Colo.; two sisters, June Gehringer, Chicago, and Alice Scheiding, San Jose, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Herbert Bruce Gillen; two brothers, Timothy "Tim" and William "Billy" Gillen; a sister, Margaret Jane Gillen; and a son-in-law.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ulysses Mennonite Brethren Church. Nathan Gift, Barry Durkee and David Kliewer, pastors, will officiate. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Herman O. Cooper
Herman O. Cooper, 80, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 13, 1922, at Cruce, Okla., the son of Herbert H. and Alva E. Pence Cooper.
A Garden City resident since 1996, moving from Billings, Okla., he was a retired oil and gas production foreman for Continental Oil Co. of Clearwater.
Mr. Cooper was a member of the Baptist faith, Masonic Lodge of St. John, and the American Legion of Garden City, a life member of the National Rifle Association, a former member of the Transportation Committee and the Finney County Committee on Aging, both at Garden City, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
On July 11, 1944, he married Marjorie J. Rush at Amarillo, Texas. She survives. He also is survived by two daughters, Sheryl J. Dick and Janis K. Cornett, both of Garden City; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Herschel J. Cooper.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Center of Finney County, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Erma F. Peterson
HUGOTON - Erma F. Peterson, 84, of Hugoton, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.
She was born Oct. 6, 1918, at Alva, Okla., the daughter of Alfred and Cecil Rose Hendricks. She graduated from Alva High School and Northwestern State College at Alva.
A homemaker, Mrs. Peterson had worked as a teacher and a secretary. She was a member of First Christian Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 5391, both at Hugoton, and enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and reading.
On Oct. 9, 1942, she married Leslie E. Peterson. He died Aug. 6, 1997. She also was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Survivors include a brother, Dean Hendricks, Edmond, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Jeff Aenk officiating. Burial will follow at Hugoton Cemetery.

Virginia Ann Howell
SYRACUSE - Virginia Ann Howell, 75, of Syracuse, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Jan. 3, 1927, at Nickerson, the daughter of Dan and Lucille Monson Dhonau. She graduated from Nickerson High School in 1945.
In 1946, she moved to Tyrone, Okla., where she married Charles W. Howell on Dec. 15, 1946. She had worked as a bookkeeper for her great-aunt at Compton Grain in Tyrone. In 1948, she and her husband moved to the family farm, 12 miles north of Syracuse, where they were wheat farmers and raised cattle. They enjoyed being landowners and farming.
Mrs. Howell was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Syracuse, where she was active in various areas, especially helping with funeral dinners. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her sons and grandchildren, walking, knitting and embroidery work. She also enjoyed traveling and had taken trips to Europe and the Middle East. She and her husband had been a host family for a German foreign exchange student, Andrea Schrader.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, William C. "Bill" Howell and John G. "Greg" Howell, both of Syracuse; two sisters, Helen Schneider, Fairview, Okla., and Darlene Johnson, Irving, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. William Fitzgerrel officiating. A graveside committal service will follow at Syracuse Cemetery.

Ida 'Tillie' Guthrie
Funeral for Ida "Tillie" Guthrie, 73, will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Steuhrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Guthrie died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 6, 1929, at Menno, S.D., the daughter of Mike and Olga Lagant Lipkie. Her parents died when she was young, and she then was raised by her foster parents, Julius and Rose Mutschelknaus. The family moved from Avon, S.D., to Garden City in 1942, and she graduated from Garden City High School.
A homemaker, she managed and owned the U & I Trailer Court from 1967 until 1984. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, cooking, traveling and gardening. In her later years, she enjoyed volunteering at Garden Valley Retirement Village.
On Feb. 15, 1949, she married Ralph M. Guthrie at Garden City. He died Oct. 8, 1994. She also was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents, four brothers and one sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia "Patt" McConnaughhay, Hastings, Neb., and Rebecca "Becky" Counterman, Garden City; and two granddaughters.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Garden Valley Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Vivian Marcella Gentry
TRIBUNE - Funeral for Vivian Marcella Gentry, 96, will be 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune, with the Rev. Michael Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.
Mrs. Gentry died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune.
She was born July 2, 1906, at Strout, Ill., the daughter of William Sherman and Carrie Virginia House Ford.
A Greeley County resident since 1922, she was a homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church and Rebekah Lodge, both at Tribune.
On Nov. 23, 1923, she married Oren Johnston Gentry at Tribune. He died in 1980 at Tribune. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, a grandson, a sister and two brothers.
She is survived by two sons, William C. Gentry and Robert O. Gentry, both of Tribune; two daughters, Ruth L. Sawyer, Willows, Calif., and Carol V. Houston, Tribune; a sister, Doris Ford, Roadhouse, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
