Clyde E. Beymer

LAKIN - Clyde E. Beymer, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at his home in Lakin.

He was born Aug. 12, 1920, at Hutchinson, the son of Clyde E. Sr. and Ethel M. Jones Beymer. The family moved to Lakin in 1924. He graduated from Lakin Rural High School in 1938 and from Fort Hays State University in 1942.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945 and was stationed in India and China. After his discharge, he returned to Lakin and became a partner in Beymer & Beymer, where he served as an abstractor, Realtor and insurance agent, and was active in the development of the oil and gas industry in Kearny County by leasing properties for exploration.

In 1955, he was a member of a group that purchased the controlling interest in the Kearny County Bank and he was active on the board of directors. At the time of his death, he was the president and chairman of the board of Kearny County Bank. He also remained active as a Realtor, managing his farm properties and managing his oil and gas interests and investments. He was an advisor to many Kearny County residents on oil and gas matters.

Mr. Beymer was instrumental in the construction of Loucks Park Municipal Golf Course in Lakin and was the principal benefactor of the newly constructed indoor swimming pool at the City of Lakin Aquatics Center. An avid golfer, he was a member of Lakin Country Club and Lakin Men's Golf Association. He loved traveling, having visited Russia, China, Germany and Spain, and also loved to attend Lakin athletic events, especially those in which his grandchildren participated.

He was a member of United Methodist Church of Lakin and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, a former member of Lakin Rural High School Board of Education and the Lakin City Council and served as a board member of Plains Petroleum Co. from 1985 to 1994.

On June 17, 1942, he married Barbara J. Campbell at Deerfield. She died Aug. 28, 1997. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, R.A. "Dick" Beymer and Gale B. Beymer.

He is survived by three sons, C. Easton Beymer, Bolder City, Nev., Gary C. Beymer and Robert K. Beymer, both of Lakin; a brother, J.E. Beymer, Lakin; a sister, Cledythe Brandon, Wichita; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the Clyde and Barbara Beymer Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home, Lakin.

Dorothy Anna Pruter

DIGHTON - Funeral for Dorothy Anna Pruter, 94, a longtime Natoma resident, was to be 2 p.m. today at Peace Lutheran Church, Natoma, with the Rev. Scott Watford officiating. Burial was to be in Natoma City Cemetery.

Mrs. Pruter died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Osborne.

Born Jan. 30, 1908, in rural Natoma, she was the daughter of Elfert and Anna Marie Gehle Reese.

She had lived in the Natoma area before moving from the family farm into Natoma in 1960. Since 1992, she had been a resident of Parkview Nursing Center at Osborne. A homemaker, she was a member of Peace Lutheran Church at Natoma.

On Aug. 31, 1927, she married Everett Pruter Sr. at LaCrosse. He died March 27, 1977. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Arvin and Leonard Pruter; a grandson; four brothers; and five sisters.

She is survived by four sons, Donald Pruter, Cheyenne, Wyo., Everett Pruter Jr. and Ronald Pruter, both of Natoma, and Roger Pruter, Leavenworth; three daughters, Betty Corwin, Osborne, Neola Cordick, San Antonio, and Elaine Lewis, Dighton; 39 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the donor's choice, both in care of Pohlman's Mortuary, 701 N. First St., Natoma, KS 67651.

L.D. Batie

HUGOTON - L.D. Batie, 78, of Hugoton and formerly of Keyes, Okla., died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, Hugoton, where he had been a resident.

He was born Nov. 8, 1923, at Jamestown, Tenn., the son of David William and Janie Brooks Batie, and grew up in the area of Perryton, Texas.

In 1950, he married Edith Gunter. After their marriage, they lived in the Griggs community before moving to Keyes in 1955. A farmer and rancher in the Keyes community, Mr. Batie was a member of the Baptist Church and the VFW and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He enjoyed country and western music, with Hank Williams Sr. as one of his favorite singers. He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and writing music, and had won a talent contest singing in high school. He also sang at the Guymon (Okla.) Fair Days.

Survivors include three sons, Tommy Nolen Batie, Seneca, Mo., Joe Allen Batie, Peoria, Okla., and Wendell Batie, Benton, Wis.; six daughters, Carol Fansher, New Mexico, Pam Hagman, Peggy Ann Boothby, Linda Burnett and Debbie Crawford, all of Hugoton, and Lila Jane Cerecero, Concordia; three sisters, Bessie Longcor, Perryton, Edith, of California, and Genevieve Hamby; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Raymond Dale Batie and Doug Batie; a brother, William David Batie; and a sister, Ruby Batie.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with Robert Storms, retired pastor, officiating. Military graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Willowbar Cemetery, Keyes, conducted by Boise City (Okla.) VFW.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruby G. Howell

Ruby G. Howell, 56, of Garden City, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.

She was born Jan. 15, 1946, at Garden City, the daughter of Dick Roy and Ruby Gwendolyn Toland Woods. She attended Garden City schools. After graduating from Garden City High School, she attended Sidney's Cosmetology School in Hutchinson. She returned to Garden City and worked for one year as a hairdresser at "Myrtle's." She then worked for 20 years as a sales clerk at "Purnell's."

A lifetime Garden City resident, Mrs. Howell was a member of Community Congregational Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, the computer and sewing.

On June 20, 1965, she married Ronald Howell at Garden City. He died Sept. 15, 1992. She also was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Kelly Forbes, Garden City, and Debby Howell-Moroney, Birmingham, Ala.; two brothers, Dick Woods II, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Forrest Woods, Garden City; two sisters, Gwen Reid, San Marcos, Texas, and Delores Moore, Garden City; and four grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community Congregational Church, Garden City, with Dr. R. Michael Lake officiating. Private family burial will take place later in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Ruby G. Howell Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ann Conard Prince

Ann Conard Prince, 70, of San Pedro, Calif., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, after battling lung cancer.

Born and raised in Garden City, she was the daughter of Martha and Herbert Conard and the granddaughter of local photographer Frank "Pop" Conard.

She attended Stephens College in Missouri and Kansas University, where she received her master's degree in elementary education. She taught elementary school in California for 30 years. In her retirement, she continued tutoring children in reading and math.

Survivors include a brother, Don; two sons, George and Stephen; and her daughter, Carolyn.

A memorial celebration in her honor is scheduled for November in California.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Ann C. Prince to the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County, Memorial Department, 5858 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 300, Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Hazel Scott

Mrs. Scott died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born Jan. 29, 1917, at Mountain View, Mo., the daughter of Fred and Minnie Essinger Leonard. She attended grade school in Missouri before moving to Lane County. She graduated from Dighton High School in 1936.

A longtime Dighton resident with the exception of living in Rozel from 1947 to 1950, she worked as a clerk at Egbert Drug Store for more than 40 years. She attended First Christian Church of Dighton, belonged to Twilight Rebekah Lodge No. 663, Bronco Campers and the J.O.Y. Center, and was a longtime volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed putting together family scrapbooks, quilting at the J.O.Y. Center, ceramics, playing in the J.O.Y. Band and attending the senior dances.

On Sept. 5, 1936, she married Richard Earl Scott at Dodge City. He died May 15, 1980. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Roy, William and Henry Leonard; and two sisters, Edith Leonard and Cleta McCutchen.

Survivors include two sons, Dean Scott, Ness City, and Alan Scott, Dighton; a sister, Esther House, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the J.O.Y. Center, in care of the funeral home.

John M. Novack

DEERFIELD - Vigil service for John M. Novack, 77, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Mike Helms and Austin Herrman as celebrants. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.

Mr. Novack died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at his home in Deerfield.

He was born Jan. 30, 1925, at Windhorst, the son of John Sr. and Anna Hain Novack.

After graduating from Windhorst High School, he started working as a mechanic in Spearville and with his brother in Offerle. He then moved to Dodge City and worked as a painter. In 1951, he moved to Holcomb and became a custom hay bailer and then worked for 23 years at Santa Fe Motors in Deerfield. While working at Santa Fe Motors, he started doing custom body repair work on the side and, in 1979, he established Novack Auto Sales in Deerfield.

Mr. Novack was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church of Deerfield, Eagles Lodge of Garden City, Deerfield Lions Club, Deerfield Spartans Booster Club, and Sportsman Lake and was a Deerfield volunteer fireman. He enjoyed his antique cars, bowling, dancing, hunting, fishing, horseshoe pitching and especially enjoyed following his grandchildren's activities.

On June 19, 1945, he married Kathleen Agnes Danler at North Offerle. She survives. He also is survived by five sons, Gary Novack, Kansas City, Mo., Danny and Dave Novack, both of Holcomb, Tim Novack, Lakin, and Kevin Novack, Deerfield; six daughters, Belinda Phillips, Salina, Pat Parker, Liberal, Cindy Rivers and Kim Leonard, both of Holcomb, Debbie Davis and Colleen Pruyser, both of Topeka; a brother, Henry Novack, Hutchinson; a sister, Anna Myers, Offerle; 59 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, John, Joseph and James; a brother, Edward; a grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

Visitation hours are until 5:30 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home.

George DeArmond Lieuallen

Johnson - George DeArmond Lieuallen, 76, of Johnson, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson.

He was born April 20, 1926, at South Greenfield, Mo., the son of Hubert O. and Hattie Preston Lieuallen.

Mr. Lieuallen had lived in San Bernardino, Calif., and Kingman, Ariz., before moving to Johnson in March 2000. He worked in construction as a cement contractor. While living in California, he owned the Trails End Ranch (Cottonwood Cove), which he donated to the Hesperia (Calif.) Parks and Recreation Department.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club at Hesperia and had received the Kiwanis of the Year Award. He was a deacon at Hebron Baptist Church in San Bernardino, where he taught Sunday School and was a song leader. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed horses, donkey hunting, dogs, chickens and children and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

On Oct. 4, 1947, he married Glendena Lay at Quartzite, Ariz. She survives. He also is survived by two daughters, Jeanette Dee Hildebrandt, Hesperia, and Deborah Sue Golub, Johnson; a brother, Orland Jay Lieuallen, Willard, Mo.; a sister, Huberta Monger, Greenfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Lee and Isabelle Lieuallen.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson, with military graveside rites conducted by VFW No. 3684.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.
