Thelma F. Deselms
ULYSSES - Thelma F. Deselms, 90, of Ulysses, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born April 27, 1912, in Seward County, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Wood.
A resident of southwest Kansas for most of her life, she had lived in Ulysses since the early 1940s. She worked as a postal clerk and rural mail carrier for nearly 30 years.
Mrs. Deselms was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ulysses, belonged to Extension Homemakers Unit, was active in the Grant County Senior Citizens Center and was a former member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, and also enjoyed raising a garden, doing yard work and traveling.
On Feb. 1, 1959, she married Ralph Deselms at Ulysses. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Marvin Shelite, Hugoton; a stepson, Tommy Deselms, Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Woodrow Wood, Alva, Okla.; two sisters, Hazel Flowers, Macon, Mo., and Bea Fiene of Newton; 12 grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Elvin Lee Shelite; three daughters, Loretta Herman, Lenora Howard and Joanna Alexander; three brothers, Glen, John and Charles Wood; and a granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Grant County Senior Citizens Center in Ulysses, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Carrie Unruh Dirks
MONTEZUMA - Carrie Unruh Dirks, 93, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.
She was born Aug. 31, 1909, at Tampa, the daughter of Cornelius and Effie Koehn Unruh.
On Dec. 1, 1928, she married Jake H. Dirks at Dodge City. They moved to Montezuma when he became ill with Alzheimer's and remained in Bethel Home. He died May 31, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers and a daughter, Phyllis.
A Christian, Mrs. Dirks was a Sunday School teacher and Bible teacher for 47 years at Asbury Methodist Church in Wichita. She reunited with the Mennonite church in 1986.
She is survived by two sons, Roland Dirks, Hutchinson, and Everett Dirks, Santa Rosa, Calif.; a son-in-law; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Ella Dirks and Della Schmidt, both of Montezuma; and a brother, William C. Unruh, Wichita.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Wilbur Koehn and Harold Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. or Gideons International, in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
B.W. 'Bud' Quance
DIGHTON - Funeral for B.W. "Bud" Quance, 90, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery
with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.
Mr. Quance died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.
He was born Oct. 31, 1911, at Scott City, the son of William L. and Grace Lenihan Quance. He grew up around Pence and farmed with his father after his schooling. He then worked in grocery stores in Scott City and Oakley, farmed in Tribune and managed a filling station in Modoc.
In 1942, he moved to Dighton to work in the Armatrout Grocery Store. Later that year, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Dighton and resumed working at the grocery store. He later opened his own grocery business, Quance Super Market, which he owned until 1967. He then drove a truck for Mumma Feed Yard of Dighton until his retirement.
Mr. Quance was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton and served as a deacon, and belonged to American Legion Post No. 190, Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 286 and Dighton Rotary Club. He was a former member of the Dighton City Council and the Chamber of Commerce. His special interests were fixing and cleaning cars, and keeping up with agricultural events.
On June 29, 1931, he married Sula Mae Green in Scott County. She survives. He also is survived by a son, C. Duane "Chet" Quance of Dighton. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Neva Rose and Vera Proudfoot.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Lane County Ambulance Fund or First Christian Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Fred A. Cary
LEOTI - Funeral for Fred A. Cary, 65, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Covenant Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Kyle Evans officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery.
Mr. Cary died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Scott County.
He was born July 8, 1937, at Hollis, Okla., the son of Roy D. and Louise A. Staton Cary.
A Wichita County resident since 1968, moving from Altus, Okla., he had been an aircraft flight instructor at Oklahoma State University in the late 1950s and later was a crop duster in Hollis, Okla., and in Leoti. He was a member of Christ Covenant Church, AOPA and the OSU Flying Aggie in Oklahoma.
On Nov. 1, 1968, he married Carol McAbee at Clarendon, Texas. She survives. He also is survived by six daughters, Paula Cleaton, Liberal, Carla Wikoff and Cindy Crays, both of Leoti, Janet Royal, Hydro, Okla., Robin Ward of Hollis, and Sheila Jones, Fredrick, Okla.; three sisters, Barbara Lewis and Rowena Brock, both of Choctaw, Okla., and Amy Goble, Chandler, Okla.; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert 'Guy' Smith
Memorial service for Robert "Guy" Smith, 60, of Garden City, will be 6 tonight at Holcomb Recreation Building in Holcomb.
Mr. Smith died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Aug. 11, 1942, at Garden City, the son of Elmer Joe and Muriel Wilma Hayes Smith. He graduated from Garden City High School.
A lifetime resident of Garden City, he was a self-employed home builder and most recently had been working in home construction for Casco Homes Inc. of Garden City. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. His special interests were art and painting.
He married Connie Joe Smith. They later divorced.
He is survived by four sons, Kristopher V. Smith, Garden City, Kurtland G. Smith, Holcomb, Kevin M. Smith, Castle Rock, Colo., and Kirk S. Smith, Norman, Okla.; a daughter, Kelley S. Hernandez, Castle Rock; four brothers, Perry Smith, LaGrande, Ore., Richard "Rusty" Smith, Emporia, Von Smith and Jeffery D. Smith, both of Garden City; two sisters, Brenda Hickey and Ann Hill, both of LaGrande; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Caroline C. Kemper
Graveside service for Caroline C. Kemper, 91, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Deacon Larry Steadman will officiate.
Mrs. Kemper died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 13, 1911, at Verona, Mo., the daughter of Lute and Rose Lechner Seitnater.
A Garden City resident since 1943, moving from Muskogee, Okla., she was a homemaker. She was involved with the Lincoln School PTA and various 4-H clubs in Garden City, and was a member of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining, arranging flowers, gardening and working with upholstery.
On Nov. 12, 1930, she married Carl L. Kemper at Hutchinson.
Survivors include two sons, Gib and Sam Kemper, both of Garden City; two daughters, Ruby Mulch, Garden City, and Kathy Scott, Lakin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and nine brothers and sisters.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
John K. Hughes
LEOTI - Vigil service for John K. Hughes, 80, was to be 8:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral Mass was to be 10 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial was to follow in Leoti Cemetery.
Mr. Hughes died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Wichita County Long Term Care Center in Leoti.
He was born July 3, 1922, at Kim, Colo., the son of Franklin and Golden Reed Hughes.
A Leoti resident since 1948, moving from Fredonia, he worked for the City of Leoti for more than 28 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lions Club and Leoti Little League.
On Aug. 23, 1951, he married Gloria A. Nodine at Lamar, Colo. She died Dec. 10, 2001, at Tribune. He also was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by two sons, Charles and Tim Hughes, both of Leoti; a daughter, Margaret Cain of Lyons; two sisters, Dorothy Van Alstine, Oklona, Miss., and Ruth Koehn, Delhi, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the Wichita County Long Term Care Center or Wichita County Fire Department, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.
Charlie R. Cruz
Vigil service for Charlie R. Cruz, 27, of Dodge City, will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Ted Skalsky officiating.
Mr. Cruz died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
He was born Aug. 31, 1975, at Garden City, the son of Lucas A. and Mary Kay McMahon Cruz. The family moved from Garden City to Dodge City in 1979 and he attended schools there.
Mr. Cruz was a grocery stocker for Wal-Mart Supercenter of Dodge City. He enjoyed fishing and playing pool.
He is survived by his parents, Dodge City; a son, Jordan Cruz, Emporia; two daughters, Destiny and Isabel Cruz, both of Dodge City; three brothers, Lucas A. Cruz Jr., Alonzo Cruz and Shawn Cruz, all of Dodge City; two sisters, Darlishia Cruz and Catina Cruz, both of Dodge City; and his grandparents, Tony and Veronica Cruz, Garden City. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo McMahon Sr. and Selma Delgado.
Cremation has taken place. Memorials to the Charlie R. Cruz Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.
