Moncerrate Gutierrez
Moncerrate Gutierrez, 72, of Garden City, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in Wichita.
A self-employed landscaper, he is survived by his wife, Juanita Gutierrez.
He also is survived by six sons, Nicolas Gutierrez, Luis Gutierrez, Benito Gutierrez and Antonio Gutierrez, all of Garden City, and Gonzalo Gutierrez and Reyes Gutierrez, both of Mexico; five daughters, Margarita Palomino and Vivana Pacheco, both of Garden City, Maria Marrufo, Dodge City, Imelda Gutierrez and Faviola Gutierrez, both of Mexico; two brothers, Roberto Gutierrez and Isais Gutierrez, both of Mexico; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita. He will be buried at a later date in Namiquipa, Mexico.
Virgil M. Stoll
SCOTT CITY - Virgil M. Stoll, 77, of Scott City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Kindred Hospital, Denver.
He was born June 14, 1925, at Lodge Pole, Neb., the son of Arthur Jacob and Amelia Johanna Miltner Stoll.
He was a resident of Scott City since 1959, moving from Modesto, Calif. He was a farmer and stockman.
Mr. Stoll was a member of the Anthem Masonic Lodge 284, the Scottish Rite, Scott County Shrine Club, and the Scott County Investment Club, all of Scott City; The Isis Shrine Club, of Salina; the Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge Aerie 1404, of Garden City; and the 12th Green Club, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
He married Lorraine Armstrong on Feb., 9, 1944, in Chappell, Neb. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Janell Anderson, Scott City, and Kimberly Sands, Denver; one brother, Marv Stoll, Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Florence Elliott and Bonnie Sutton, Sidney, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in the Scott County Cemetery.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church of Scott City, Scott County Hospital, or the Shriners Hospital, all in care of the funeral home.
Betty Jean Carr
SATANTA - Betty Jean Carr, 78, of Satanta, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit, Satanta.
She was born July 25 , 1924, at Alexander, the daughter of Peter and Viola Muck Schlegel.
She married Harvey LeRoy Carr Aug. 20, 1944, at LaCrosse. They moved from Burdett to Satanta in January 1957. He died Nov. 2, 1980.
Mrs. Carr worked in housekeeping at the Satanta District Hospital for many years and was a past member of the Satanta District Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include one sister, Donna Sparks, Mesquite, Texas; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Roy Carr; a sister; and three brothers.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Revs. Ray Tweed and Tom Massey presiding. Burial will be in the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Friends may call the funeral home 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, or Shopping Stop True Value, Satanta.
Haskell County Funeral, Sublette, is in charge of the arrangements.
Gary Lynn Moody
SUBLETTE - Gary Lynn Moody, 49, Hooker, Okla., died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born Feb. 25, 1953, at Fort Smith, Ark., the son of Robert and Barbara Ann White Moody,
He attended schools in Sublette and worked in the oil fields, as well as for area farmers and ranchers.
Survivors include his father; his stepmother, Barbara Jean Moody, Sublette; a brother, Jeff Moody, Turpin, Okla.; a sister Michelle Pruitt, Mesa, Ariz; four stepbrothers, Steve, Kenyon, Doug and Oren Gautreaux, all of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepsister, Claire Gautreaux, Kansas City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Diana; a brother, Mark Allen Moody; and his grandparents, Carl and Lura Ellington and Charles and Edna Moody.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with the Rev. David Erwin presiding.
A memorial has been established for the music department of the Christian Church, Sublette.
Friends may call 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements.
Donald E. Glaze
CIMARRON - Donald E. Glaze, 82, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his home in Cimarron.
He was born April 14, 1920, at Ingalls, the son of Ira and Effie Mae Moore Glaze.
A lifetime Cimarron resident, he worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. from 1940 to 1942. He later was an inspector for the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring in 1982 after more than 31 years of service. After retirement, he worked for Burkhart Funeral Chapel until October 1987.
Mr. Glaze joined the United States Army in August of 1944, serving both stateside and in Hawaii, Saipan, and Guam as an administrative NCO, attaining the rank of tech sergeant.
He was a member of the Cimarron United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge NO. 413, Ensign, and 32 Degree Scottish Rite, Salina.
He married Le Vere Wooden Jan. 28, 1940, at Pawnee Rock. She died April 3, 1997.
Survivors include three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lynn Stringfellow; and one granddaughter.
Funeral service was this morning at the Cimarron United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Frank DeFisher presiding. Burial was at the Cimarron Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Shepherd's Center or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, both in care of Burkhart-Ziegler's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.
Lillian May Phoenix
SUBLETTE - Lillian May Phoenix, 92, of Sublette, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit, where she had been a resident for about 11 years.
She was born May 17, 1910, at Brookfield, Mo., the daughter of William and Gertrude Payne Kramer.
On Dec. 3, 1927, she married John Lester Phoenix at Eucha, Okla. They moved from Afton, Okla., to Sublette in November 1947. She had worked as a sales clerk at Myers Grocery Store for several years.
Mrs. Phoenix was baptized at First Christian Church of Olathe in 1923 and was a member of the Christian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron's Club and the Bible Study Club, all at Sublette, and Rebekah Lodge at Afton. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Her husband died July 2, 1964. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Bill Phoenix, in 1984, and Dean Phoenix, in 1945; a sister, Mary Evelyn Alexander; and five brothers, John William Kramer, Oscar Franklin Kramer, Edward Herman Kramer, Diedrich Harold Kramer and Karl Fredrick Kramer.
She is survived by three sons, John B. Phoenix, Larry C. Phoenix and James L. Phoenix, all of Sublette; two daughters, M. Darlene Ash, Afton, and Marsha D. Collins, Tahlequah, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Phoenix, Sublette; two brothers, Woodrow Kramer, Hutchinson, and Bill Kramer, Olathe; a sister, Marge Messer, Olathe; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Revs. David Erwin and Walter Birney officiating. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Cemetery
in Afton.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Christian Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Emanuel Mai
TRIBUNE - Emanuel Mai, 89, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
He was born Jan. 11, 1913, in Russell County, the son of John Peter and Marie Katherine Kern Mai.
A farmer/stockman, he had been a Greeley County resident since 1930. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Supper Club, both at Tribune, and was a former Farmco board member.
On July 1, 1934, he married Madeline Bohl at Tribune. She died Aug. 6, 1990, at Topeka. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, a grandchild and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, Le Roy Mai, Tribune; two brothers, Edward Mai, Tribune, and Julius Mai, Salina; two sisters, Lydia Lepperand, Russell, and Anna Bohl, Goodland; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Mark Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.
