Grace O. Craig
Funeral for Grace O. Craig, 87, of Garden City, was to be 2 p.m. today at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. David Sweley officiating. Burial was to follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Craig died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Feb. 25, 1915, at Humboldt, the daughter of John Rhinehart and Anna Catherine Mauk Nanninga. She attended schools in Lawrence, graduated from Lawrence High School and attended the University of Kansas for two years.
On Nov. 11, 1934, she married Lowell Craig at Lawrence. They moved to Dodge City in 1935 and to Garden City in 1937. A homemaker, she also helped out with the family business, "The Booterie."
Her husband died March 29, 1988. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven Craig; two daughters, Diana Harms and Marcia Jeanne Craig; a granddaughter; five brothers; and three sisters.
Mrs. Craig was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women, was a founding member of Salamundi and volunteered at St. Catherine Hospital. She also belonged to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, AARP, the Women's Golf Association, KU Alumni Association and Sans Souce Bridge Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf and also enjoyed music.
Survivors include a son, Larry Craig, Lubbock, Texas; a daughter, Judy Ackley, Garden City; a sister, Margaret Robinson, Overland Park; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church or Meals on Wheels, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Valeria I. Shaw
Valeria I. Shaw, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Jan. 15, 1922, at Coldwater, the daughter of Lloyd W. and Olga Fae Whelpley Korf. She attended Salem Valley School near Ingalls, graduated from Copeland High School and attended cosmetology school in Hutchinson.
On Jan. 3, 1942, she married Odell Jasper Shaw at Scott City. Mrs. Shaw was the longtime owner and operator of the Unique Beauty Shop in Garden City. She and her husband lived in Kansas City for about 20 years and returned after her retirement from being a beauty operator.
She belonged to Bible Christian Church, Good SAMS RV Club, Buffalo Campers RV Club, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, Senior Center of Finney County and the Garden City chapter of the Diabetes Association. She enjoyed crocheting, textile painting and especially enjoyed entertaining her family in her home.
Survivors include a daughter, Della Sanford, Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Jim Korf, Dodge City; a sister, Vivian Rintoul, Garden City; and several nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces. Her husband died Oct. 11, 1991.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Donald E. Carter and Jeff Starkey officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, Garden City Animal Shelter or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Gerald Clymer
SUBLETTE - Gerald Clymer, 63, of Sublette, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born Aug. 8, 1939, in Washita County, Okla., the son of Clell and Pearl Packer Clymer.
A farm laborer, he had spent most of his life in Haskell County, moving from Oklahoma. He enjoyed visiting with people.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Clymer, Cuba, Mo., and Scott Clymer, Branson, Mo.; two daughters, Sherri Evans, Bay Town, Texas, and Cami Edgar, Mount Vernon, Mo.; three brothers, Bobby "Red" Clymer, Garden City, Floyd "Whitey" Clymer, Coffeyville, and Wesley Clymer, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Doris Desrocher, Sublette, Florene Romeburg, Garden City, and Linda McCrary, Joplin, Mo.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.
Graydon Layfield Wurst
Funeral for Graydon Layfield Wurst, 88, of Sterling, was to be 10 this morning at St. Paul Catholic Church in Lyons, with the Rev. Colin Boor officiating. Burial was to be in Sterling Community Cemetery.
Mr. Wurst died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 21, 1913, at Abbyville, the son of William and Della Miller Wurst. He graduated from Sterling High School.
A lifetime resident of Sterling, he was a retired carpenter. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church at Lyons and the American Legion at Sterling, and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II.
On Nov. 25, 1948, he married Agnes Downey at LaJunta, Colo. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Gregory Wurst, Manhattan, Wendel Wurst, Garden City, and Brian Wurst, Lamar, Colo.; two sisters, Phyllis Don Carlos and Patsy McMurphy, both of Sterling; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Cundith.

Nadine D. Strecker
LEOTI - Funeral for Nadine D. Strecker, 83, of Leoti, was to be 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just officiating. Burial was to be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Strecker died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Scott County, the daughter of Walter and Sara Ferguson French.
A lifetime resident of western Kansas, she was a homemaker and belonged to the United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary, both at Leoti.
On July 19, 1943, she married Oliver Strecker at Wichita. He died Jan. 13, 1974, at Severy.
She is survived by a daughter, Glenda Harkness, Leoti; three sisters, Opal Gruver, Scott City, Roberta Onstott, Payson, Ariz., and Clarice Van Dolah, Garden City; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the Leoti Emergency Medical Technicians, Wichita County Long Term Care Unit or the church, all in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.
Dale C. Burns
ELKHART - Funeral for Dale C. Burns, 76, of Elkhart, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart, with the Revs. Jim Brackett and Jerry Cole officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
A lifetime resident of Morton County, Mr. Burns died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born April 23, 1926, at Kansas City, Mo., the son of Clinton B. and Ruth B. Carter Burns. He graduated from high school in 1943 at Elkhart.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed on the U.S.S. Laurens APA 153. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Morton County, where he began farming and ranching for himself. He retired in 1987.
Mr. Burns was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart. His special interests included woodworking, taking care of his trees on the farm, traveling with his wife and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Melba Brown Burns, whom he married May 12, 1946, in Morton County; two sons, Roger Dale Burns, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Wayne Allen Burns, Newton; a brother-in-law; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart. Memorials are suggested to the church or Whistle Stop Park, both in care of the funeral home, 514 Kansas Ave., Elkhart, KS 67950.
Trax Jay Fontenot
HOLCOMB - Trax Jay Fontenot, 16, of Holcomb, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident north of Lakin.
He was born May 7, 1986, at Lakin, the son of Jim and Stephanie Jeffries Fontenot. A Holcomb resident since 1992, moving from Garden City, he attended Wichita County High School in Leoti.
He was a member of the 4-H Club and the school choir, was the recipient of the Odyssey of the Mind Omar Award, was a regional finalist in the Kansas Spelling Bee Contest, and was involved with track and football, all in the Holcomb school district.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Logan Fontenot, of the home; and his grandparents, Dean and Mona Jeffries, Leoti, and Patricia Fontenot, Lakin.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Trax Fontenot Memorial Fund at First National Bank of Holcomb, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St., Garden City.
Dennis Basgall
SCOTT CITY - Dennis Basgall, 59, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at his home in Las Vegas.
He was born April 14, 1943, at Colby, the son of Adolph and Josephine Pfeifer Basgall.
A Las Vegas resident for 14 years, moving from Wichita, he was an operating engineer. He belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Ashmore; a grandson; and four sisters, Joyce Schaffer, Brawley, Calif., Delores Gentry, Bossier, La., Norma Steffens, Imperial Valley, Calif., and Donna Wright, Scott City.
A memorial service was 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Inurnment was in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Memorials are suggested for Masses at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
