Carolyn R. Peery
Johnson - Carolyn R. Peery, 82, of Clearwater died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Ninnescah Manor in Clearwater.
She was born Jan. 22, 1920, at Wichita, the daughter of Ernest Ashby and Laura Myrtle (Drake) Peery.
She was a Cheyenne, Wyo., resident from 1956 to 1993, at which time she moved to Clearwater.
She was a secretary for the state of Wyoming and Mountain West Savings and Loan.
She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church, Cheyenne, Celebration Baptist Church in Wichita, and the Green Thumb Organization. She enjoyed singing with church groups, crocheting, sewing and quilting.
She is survived by one sister, Ernestine Carrithers, Wichita. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Joseph Peery, Vincent Ashby, Howard Peery and William Jennings.
The funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Johnson, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery
in Johnson.
Sybil M. Heinz
Vigil service for Sybil M. Heinz, 89, of Dodge City, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Nicholas Church, Kinsley. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Nicanor Ferangco officiating. Burial will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Kinsley.
Mrs. Heinz died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at her home.
She was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Hodgeman County, the daughter of Arthur T. and Elzetta Rhoades Kingry.
A former resident of Kinsley, she was a homemaker and belonged to St. Nicholas Church and the Altar Society, both at Kinsley.
On Nov. 11, 1935, she married Milton J. Heinz at Wichita. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Larry J. Heinz, Garden City; two daughters, Julie A. Gleason, Dodge City, and Mary Beth Herrmann, Prosper, Texas; two sisters, Kathryn Lewis, Kinsley, and Beth Beck, Larned; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one grandchild.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Nicholas School Endowment Fund or Hospice of the Prairie, both in care of McKillip Memorial Funeral Home, Kinsley.
Frank John Novy
FRIEND - Frank John Novy, 91, a former Friend resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Cheney Golden Age Home in Cheney.
He was born Nov. 21, 1910, at Omaha, Neb., the son of John and Marie Novy.
Mr. Novy lived in Omaha until 1920, at Wilber, Neb., until 1940, and at Western, Neb., until 1944. He then lived in Friend until moving to Cheney in October 2001. Before moving to Cheney, he worked as a cattle buyer and operated a cattle feeding business.
On Aug. 17, 1933, he married Blanche Chab at Fairbury, Neb. She survives at Wichita. He also is survived by a brother, John F. Novy, Lincoln, Neb.; two sons, Frank E. Novy, Wichita, and Lowell L. Novy, Simi Valley, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marie Kotas; a son, Marvin D. Novy; and a granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Zajicek Funeral Home Chapel in Wilber. Burial will follow in Wilber Czech Cemetery.
Lanterman Funeral Home, Cheney, is in charge of arrangements.
Naomi B. Sowles
Graveside service for Naomi B. Sowles, 81, of Great Bend, was to be 11 this morning at Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. Loren Dyke officiating.
Mrs. Sowles died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.
Born June 30, 1921, at Elgin, she was the daughter of Norman I. and Alma E. Johnson Bowman.
She and Lewis Harding Scott were married April 8, 1941, at Wichita, and had a daughter, Sandra Sue. She married George Sowles on June 3, 1944, at Oklahoma City. He died Dec. 3, 1997. She also was preceded in death by a son, Bill Sowles.
A resident of Great Bend since 1956, having previously lived in Liberal, Russell and Stafford, Mrs. Sowles was a homemaker. She belonged to the First Christian Church and American Legion, both at Great Bend.
Survivors include a son, Ken Sowles, Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Sandra Spires, Garden City, and Barbara Moos, Hays; three sisters, Betty Starwalt, Minneapolis, Norma Kramer, Dodge City, and Pat Knocke of Stafford; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church Scholarship Fund or American Legion Scholarship Fund, both in care of Hays-Christians Funeral Home in Lindsborg.
Donald W. 'Bill' Edwards
Funeral for Donald W. "Bill" Edwards, 87, of Garden City, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Edwards died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born July 12, 1915, at Thayer, Mo., the son of Loren and Mary Eliza Hass Edwards. He grew up in Thayer and attended schools there. He later traveled the western United States working in the oil field.
On June 20, 1936, he married Opal Marine Hammond at Salina. They moved to Garden City in 1953. He owned and operated Edwards Tank Truck Service for 20 years, retiring in 1979, and was a member of I.O.O.F. of Blackwell, Okla. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and watching ball games.
His wife died Jan. 2, 1999. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John F. Edwards; four brothers, James, Clarence, Monard and Wilbur Edwards; and four sisters, Mary Edwards, Verna Williams, Carol Criswell and May Trimble.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna Preston, Garden City; two sisters, Merle Stone, Kansas City, Mo., and Edith Kellett, Springfield, Mo.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Lenora Kreutzer Sauer
Funeral for Lenora Kreutzer Sauer, 83, of Hays, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady, Help of Christian Catholic Church, Antonino, with the Rev. Earl Befort officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A Hays Medical Center Auxiliary rosary is planned for 4 p.m. today, followed by a Christian Mothers service at 6:30 p.m. and parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sauer died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Hays Medical Center.
She was born March 22, 1919, at Ness City, the youngest of 10 children born to Joseph A. and Anna Werth Sauer. The family lived in Ness City before moving to Garden City, where she finished school.
On June 17, 1940, she married Ignatius Sauer at Antonino. She was a cook in the elementary school for 18 years, and then volunteered at St. Anthony's Hospital for many years after she and her husband moved to Hays.
Mrs. Sauer was a member of Our Lady, Help of Christian Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers, both at Antonino, and also belonged to Hays Medical Center Auxiliary.
Her husband died June 25, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Marie Kreutzer, Sister Clementine Kreutzer and Verna Johnson; an infant sister, Rose Kreutzer; a brother, Fred Kreutzer; and an infant brother, Isadore Kreutzer.
She is survived by three sisters, Otillia Dater, Ludwina Horning and Clementine Brungardt, and a sister-in-law, Josephine Kreutzer Tatro, all of Garden City; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Louise Hodges
Funeral for Helen Louise Hodges, 86, of Garden City, will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery.
Mrs. Hodges died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at her home.
She was born Dec. 28, 1915, at Los Angeles, the daughter of Earl and Pearl E. Thomason Swift.
Mrs. Hodges previously had lived in Great Bend for many years and formerly resided in Wichita. She was a presser for Paris Cleaners and Ineeda Cleaners and worked with deaf children in lip reading at Wichita. She was a member of First Christian Church of Great Bend.
On Aug. 8, 1945, she married John A. Hodges at Henryetta, Okla. He died Sept. 3, 1984. She also was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Sullivan; three half brothers, Leslie, Walter and Willie Horine; and a half sister, Bess Robbins.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Russell, Garden City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Ruth O. Kuhlman
LAKIN - Funeral for Ruth O. Kuhlman, 80, of Lakin, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Kuhlman died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born Oct. 25, 1921, at Allison, Colo., the daughter of Herman and Emma Kettler Coerber. The family moved to Deerfield when she was young. She attended Deerfield schools, graduated from Deerfield High School in 1940, and graduated from St. Catherine Hospital Nursing School.
On Oct. 5, 1945, she married Wallace Kuhlman at Deerfield. They lived on the farm in northern Kearny County after their marriage. A homemaker, Mrs. Kuhlman had worked as a nurse for a short time. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lakin and the Farm Bureau Ladies, and enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and gardening.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Grady Kuhlman, Garden City, and Mark Kuhlman, Dayton, Nev.; four daughters, Sheri Stansbury, New Orleans, Trudy Ginest and Kathy Mayer, both of Powell, Wyo., and Sandy Calkins, Lakin; a brother, Milton Coerber, Lakin; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Becky Whetstone; a grandchild; three brothers; and three sisters.
