Dorothy L. (Hollopeter) McGillivray

ULYSSES - Funeral for Dorothy L. (Hollopeter) McGillivray, 89, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with Rev. Bill Harrold and Rev. John Warring presiding. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.

She died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.

She was born Aug. 20, 1912, at Iuka, the daughter of Carlin James and Clara May (Logan) Hollopeter. She was a graduate of Satanta High School.

She worked in Plains as a bookkeeper for John Deere Implement before moving to Ulysses, where she was the city clerk for 25 years.

She was a member of the Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79 Auxiliary, Ulysses, Business and Professional Women's Club, and a life member of the City Clerks Association.

On Nov. 2, 1935, she married Boyd Dean Jones. He died Jan. 18, 1969. On Feb. 14, 1972, she married L.E. "Jim" McGillivray. He died Oct. 28, 1994.

She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Joyce Ann Teegerstrom and Shirly Jean Warring.

Survivors include one sister, June Bolan, Plains; one step-son, Bob McGillivray, Fort Worth, Texas; two step-daughters, Jimmy Main, Ulysses, and Jackie Ealsan, Haynes, Alaska; two grandsons; two granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Friends may call 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Garnand is in charge of arrangements.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79 Auxiliary, Ulysses, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Carrie E. McVey

DODGE CITY - Graveside services for Carrie E. McVey, 91, was 10 a.m. today at the Lakin Cemetery, with Pastor Michael T. Burns presiding.

She died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City.

She was born Jan. 21, 1911, at Bethany, Mo., the daughter of Jason Warren and Clara E. Field Adams. A homemaker, she was a former resident of Lakin and Garden City before moving to Dodge City in 1992. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren, Garden City.

On Jan. 19, 1931, she married Earl O. McVey at Bolivar, Mo. He died in February 1970.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Doug, Garden City, and Royce, Montezuma; remaining brothers and sisters; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Good Samaritan Center in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Marva Sue Miller

OKLAHOMA CITY - Marva Sue Miller, 66, died June 24, 2002, in Oklahoma City.

She was born May 25, 1936, in Independence to William Russell and Helen Ruth Dillman.

She was a long-time resident of southwest Kansas, graduating from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College. She lived in Liberal for 30 years. During her time in Liberal, she worked as a legal secretary and medical transcriptionist.

She was an avid dancer and was the owner and operator of Marva School of Dance for many years.

She also enjoyed organizing dances and activities for the Liberal Senior Center and worked for several years as a part-time ballroom dance instructor for Seward County Community College.

For the last five years, she worked as secretary for the First Presbyterian Church in Liberal, where she was a member. She also taught Sunday school and vacation bible school.

She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Miller, Oklahoma City; her sister, Linda Hartley, Oklahoma City; four sons, Russell Groth and Kirk Groth, both of Garden City, Ken Groth, Oklahoma City, and Don Hubbard, Oklahoma City; one daughter, Cené Gibson, Oklahoma City; two step-children, Karla Epple, Sabetha, and Doug Miller, Marble Falls, Texas; 24 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be sent in memory of Marva to support the children's ministry of the First Presbyterian Church, 1551 N. Western Ave., Liberal KS 67901.

Carole A. Mead

PAWNEE ROCK - Funeral for Carole A. Mead, 64, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Rev. Don Paden will officiate. Burial will be at Pawnee Rock Cemetery, Pawnee Rock.

She died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital, Hutchinson.

She was born Feb. 2, 1938, at Garden City to Guy Carlton and Ruth Lorine Cronenberg.

She married Bob J. Mead Sept. 18, 1955, at Great Bend. He survives.

She was a homemaker who lived in Pawnee Rock for 37 years after moving from Great Bend. She was a member of First Christian Church, Pawnee Rock.

She was preceded in death by her father.

She was survived by her mother, Ruth Buehler, Great Bend; her husband; one son, Alan K. Mead, Newton; one daughter, Karla K. Hartzell, Beverly; two sisters, Connie Harsha, Garden City, and Janet Adams, Larned; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours at Bryant Funeral Home are 5 to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday.

A memorial fund had been set up with the American Cancer Society.

William F. 'Bill' Phillips

Memorial service for William F. "Bill" Phillips, 76, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City. Pastor Lyle Stuehrenberg will officiate. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

He died Monday, July 1, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital.

He was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Rhodes, Iowa, to William and Pearl (Glendy) Phillips.

Phillips served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After serving, he moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where he worked for Lennox Co. He later moved to Deerfield in the early 1950s, where he live for three years.

He returned to Mashalltown, where he married Donna M. Engel June 22, 1957. They moved to Garden City in 1965 and have lived there since.

Phillips worked for a short time at the Garden City Cooperative, then began working as a warehouse foreman for USD 457, retiring in 1993.

He enjoyed watching television, painting and jigsaw puzzles. He was a former member of the Garden City Eagles Lodge and the Marshalltown VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe Phillips; and two sisters, Gladys Mae Childs and Betty Lou Stewart.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Mike Phillips, Garden City; one daughter, Tanya Collazo, Salina; and five grandchildren.

Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St., with the family present 6 to 7 p.m. Garnand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can made to an organization of the donor's choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Joseph P. 'Joe' Amerin

LIBERAL - Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph P. "Joe" Amerin, 78, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Plains, with Father Francis Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

Amerin died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at the home of his son, Joe Amerin, of Liberal.

He was born Aug. 1, 1923, at Plains, the son of Enos and Margaret Rudolph Amerin.

Amerin attended school at Plains and farmed for many years. Later, he was warehouseman for Ralston Purina Feeds for 16 years, retiring in 1985.

He married Katherine M. Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by one son, Joe Amerin; one daughter, Margaret Kay Amerin, Liberal; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call Miller Mortuary, Liberal, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Miller Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
