Mary Ellen Shea
Mary Ellen Shea, 84, a registered nurse, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City, where she had been a resident.
She was born Jan. 21, 1918, at Durham, N.C., the daughter of Grover A. and Lottie Johnson Horton.
In 1954, she married Billy M. Shea at San Diego. He died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by two sons, David Griffin, Billingham, Wash., and Michael Griffin, San Diego; two daughters, Danielle Madsen, San Diego, and Robin Skiff, Silver Springs, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No services or visitation are planned. Inurnment will be in Fort Dodge Cemetery.
Montezuma Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Heather Ann Hayes
A Requiem Mass for Heather Ann Hayes, 34, of Garden City, will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Michael Milliken of Grace Church in Hutchinson as celebrant.
She died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
Born March 7, 1968, at Oberlin, she attended school at the Capper Foundation in Topeka. A client of Destiny Supports, she was employed at McDonald's West for more than seven years and also worked at the Everyday Kids clothing store. She was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Garden City.
Survivors include her parents, Bill Hayes, Oregon, and Larry and Diane Steadman, Garden City; two sisters, Heidi Kohls, Liberal, and Lanelle McKernan, Wichita; a brother, Brad Steadman, Wichita Falls, Texas; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Newlin and Lois Reynolds, and Keith and Vi Hayes, and her aunt, Rozlyn Reynolds, all of Hutchinson.
Memorials in her name are suggested to St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, is in charge of arrangements.
Cheryl Leah Heeke
Graveside memorial service for Cheryl Leah Heeke, 42, of Flagstaff, Ariz., will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
She died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.
Born in Garden City on Oct. 6, 1959, she was the daughter of Owen G. and Rose Schiffelbein Heeke. She grew up in Garden City and attended schools here.
A resident of Flagstaff since 1984, she enjoyed plants, gardening and animals, and especially loved taking care of her dog, Pyro, and her three cats.
She is survived by three brothers, Duane Heeke, Garden City, Richard Heeke, Mustang, Okla., and Kenneth Heeke, Carona, Calif.; two sisters, Carleen Heeke, Tucson, Ariz., and Lori Welch, Garden City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorials to the Cheryl Heeke Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Lyndon S. Olson-Johnson
Lyndon Scott Olson-Johnson, the son of Samuel Johnson and Christina Olson of Garden City, was stillborn Monday, July 15, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Samuel Johnson Jr., Emporia; his grandparents, Rick Olson, Hays, Bob and Kathy Sanders, Holcomb, Nancy Johnson, York, Neb., and Samuel Johnson, Fayetteville, Ark.; and his great-grandparents, Alden and Macalene Olson of McDonald, Ruth Elliott, Bird City, and Ruth Hoffschneider, York, Neb.
Funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Private family burial will take place Friday afternoon at Atwood Fairview Cemetery
in Atwood.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Clifford P. Schmidt
CIMARRON - Clifford P. Schmidt, 91, of Montezuma, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.
He was born June 11, 1911, in Marion County, the son of Pete and Lena Koehn Schmidt.
A farmer and farm laborer, Mr. Schmidt was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Cimarron.
On Oct. 29, 1939, he married Dessie Kehn at Montezuma. She died June 21, 1974. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Margie May Schmidt; a grandson; four brothers, Ed, Alfred, Sam and Lewis Schmidt; and two sisters, Mabel Schmidt and Caroline Unruh.
He is survived by four sons, Vernon Schmidt, Buena Vista, Colo., Clayton Schmidt, Montezuma, Wilford Schmidt, Cimarron, and Manford Schmidt, Balko, Okla.; three daughters, Berdena Stephans, Wichita, Ann Bolton, West Memphis, Ark., and Mary Koehn, Scooba, Miss.; a brother, Otis Schmidt, Moundridge; a sister, LaVivian Unruh, Moundridge; 24 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Cimarron Mennonite Church. Wilbur Koehn, Vernon Giesbrecht and Curt Ensz, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home and 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Jacquline Stahlecker
Funeral for Jacquline JoQueta Stahlecker, 67, of Wichita, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Wichita. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at White Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Stahlecker, a homemaker, died Monday, July 15, 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer E. Stahlecker; two sons, Alvin E. Payne, Stockton, Mo., and Justin B. Stahlecker, Wichita; three daughters, Patsy Gene Hinton, Danville, Lea R. Noll, Amarillo, Texas, and Judy I. Dahl, Rose Hill; two stepsons, Cecil Stahlecker, Dayton, Texas, and Steve Helms, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Tracy Jo Cassidy-Fox, Wichita; two sisters, Judy K. Ribbing, Garden City, and Vera M. Buescher, San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Gene Tabor, Garden City; 25 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Lee Fenton
HOLCOMB - Graveside service for Marvin Lee Fenton, 71, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles West officiating.
Mr. Fenton died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 14, 1930, at Holcomb, the son of Richard Lee and Sarah Olive Foreman Fenton. A lifetime resident of Holcomb, he was a truck driver.
On May 12, 1957, he married Delma Embree at Holcomb. She died May 2, 1982, at Hays. He also was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Fenton, Holcomb; two daughters, Sherri Barbo, Conway Springs, and Shawna Lemon, Kremmling, Colo.; a brother, Arnold Dean Fenton, Holcomb; two sisters, Dolores Miller and Wilma Solze, both of Garden City; and six grandchildren.
Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Dorothy Viola Phelps
Dorothy Viola Phelps, 86, of Richland, Mo., died Friday, June 21, 2002.
She was born June 24, 1915, at Hannah, Mo., the daughter of Albert and Eldora Howell Pruitt. At an early age, she professed her desire to become a Christian, spending most of her young years near the Fairview Baptist Church area.
She and her husband, William Green, had two children, Everett Lee Green, who is now deceased; and Sarah Ann Hamilton, of Rolla.
On Jan. 20, 1939, she married Herman B. Phelps. They had three children, Hazel L. Jones, Garden City; and David A. Phelps and Judy M. Shepherd, both of Richland.
She also is survived by 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nora Eaken of Richland. In addition to both of her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Phelps enjoyed working in Richland for various business people and had many hobbies such as collecting rare flowers for her many flower gardens and delivering homemade meals for shut-ins. She loved children and had cared for many others in her home after her own were grown.
Funeral was 2 p.m. June 24 at First Baptist Church, Richland, with the Rev. Lee Todd officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Richland.
Colonial Funeral Chapel, Richland, was in charge of arrangements.
Lola 'Peggy' Jones
DIGHTON - Lola Mae "Peggy" Jones, 78, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 24, 1923, at Claflin, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Mae Eckels Siek. When she was 9, the family moved to northern Lane County. She walked one mile to attend Dalton Valley School in Lane County.
After her schooling, she moved to Quinter to work for James and Bessie Boone. It was there she met Eric L. Jones, who also was working for the Boones. They were married Oct. 13, 1941, at Quinter. After their marriage, they moved to a farm at Asbury, Mo. When her husband went into the military, she returned to Lane County and later rejoined him at Columbus, Ga., before returning to Asbury. After his discharge, they moved to Sterling. In 1946, they moved to Dighton to farm, and they moved to the present farm in 1970. She cooked at Dighton Grade School for two years and helped her husband with the farm work.
Mrs. Jones was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton, served as deaconess and on the funeral dinner committee of the church and belonged to Christian Women's Fellowship, American Legion Auxiliary, Spring Creek FCE Extension and Twilight Rebekah Lodge No. 663. She was a former member of the T.O.P.S. Club and the Lane County Hospital Auxiliary, a former 4-H and Girl Scout leader, and earned the Bankers Conservation Award and the Windbreak Conservation Award. She enjoyed her family, gardening, embroidery, cooking and music.
She is survived by two daughters, Saundra Sue Shapland, Dighton, and Marilyn Kay McFann, Scott City; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband died May 14, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alvin and Charles Siek; and three sisters, Mary Bast, Margueritte Smid and Alice Siek.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Ben Freisen and Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Dighton or First Baptist Church of Scott City, both in care of the funeral home.
