Thomas Lee Winey
Mr. Winey died Tuesday, July 23, 2002.
He was born Nov. 21, 1943, at Texarkana, Texas, the son of Harold and Kathryn Lester Winey.
A professional musician, Mr. Winey had also worked in direct sales and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
In 1997, he married Carol Walker. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Rogers, Ark.; and a daughter, Tamara Torgeson.
Resthaven Funeral Home, Oklahoma City, and Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, are in charge of arrangements.
'Jock' Charles Murray
Funeral for "Jock" Charles Robert Murray, 72, will be 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Private family burial is planned for later.
Mr. Murray died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born March 23, 1930, on the family farm north of Montrose in Jewell County, the son of James Robert and Nettie Almira Diamond Murray. He spent his younger years breaking and riding horses and playing "Town Team" basketball and baseball. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1948.
On Dec. 19, 1950, he married Betty Katherine Hancock at Mankato. They had five children.
Mr. Murray served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict and also served for six years in the National Guard. He was the sheriff of Jewell County from 1965 until 1970, when he became a special agent for the Kansas Bureau of Investigations, retiring in 1992 after 22 years of service.
After his retirement, he enjoyed doing yard work, chores around the house and the many woodworking projects he designed and crafted for his family. He also loved to hunt and took special pride in breeding and training his Brittany dogs. He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren's activities, driving to attend their events, including basketball and baseball games, wrestling matches and cattle shows. He also enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family and his extended family with the bureau.
Mr. Murray was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Kansas Sheriff's Association.
He married Sharon Ann Dickenson White on May 12, 1990, at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Jim Murray, Colby, John Murray, Santa Fe, N.M., and Kevin Murray, Manhattan; two daughters, Kathy Anderson, Oakley, and Kristy Moser, Winona; a stepson, Alan White, Oakland, Fla.; a brother, Jerry Murray, Mankato; two sisters, Virginia Hansen and Eunice Hughes, both of Mankato; a sister-in-law; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Russell, Gene, Aaron, Omer, Richard and Robert John; and a granddaughter.
There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Jock Murray Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Teresa 'Tee Tee' Modie
LAKIN - Funeral for Teresa Idell "Tee Tee" Modie, 86, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Modie died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born March 11, 1916, at Westphalia, the daughter of William and Alta Steen Weber. She spent her early years in Anderson and Coffey counties, attending country schools there and in Kearny County. In 1930, the family moved to Kearny County, and she worked on the farm.
On Aug. 7, 1941, she married George Modie at Garden City. In 1967, they moved to Lakin. He died Nov. 29, 1984. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew.
Mrs. Modie was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge, Sportsman's Lake, Card Club, Flower Club, Birthday Club, Historical Society, Homemaker's Extension Club and the local Election Board. She enjoyed playing pitch, working crossword puzzles, crocheting, ceramics, knitting and doing embroidery work. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Heinitz Burden, Lakin, and Irene Lewis, Deerfield; three nephews; two nieces; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 11 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Kearny County Home Health Care or the Teresa Modie Scholarship Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
Nick Shull
DIGHTON - Graveside service for Nick Shull, 35, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with Milton Raymer officiating.
Mr. Shull died Monday, July 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born July 10, 1967, at Scott City, the son of Horton Jr. and Beverly Burghart Shull.
After graduating from Great Bend High School in 1986, he worked at Pizza Hut and Kennedy's in Great Bend. He lived in San Diego before returning to Great Bend, where he was a cook at the Pioneer Inn and Black Angus. In 1994, he moved to Dighton, where he was the head cook at American Legion Post No. 190. He enjoyed music and working with electronics.
He is survived by his mother, Great Bend; three brothers, Mark Shull, Plano, Texas, Chris Shull, Harper, and Jeff Shull, Great Bend; and a sister, Ann Shull, Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Tim Shull.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton.
Kay Margaret Smith
Kay Margaret Smith, 55, a former area resident, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Hays Medical Center in Hays.
She was born April 19, 1947, at Hays, the daughter of Max and Mabel Davis Schmitz. She grew up in Plainville and Norton, graduated from Norton Community High School and attended college before becoming a licensed practical nurse. She had lived at Johnson City; Ulysses, McCook, Neb., Cushing, Okla., Norton, and Hays.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Catholic faith, the American Legion and the VFW. She served in the U.S. Air Force as a nurse during the Vietnam War.
She is survived by her father, Norton; two sons, Chris Smith, Tulsa, Okla., and Patrick Smith, Douglas, Wyo.; three sisters, Beverly Schmitz Glass, Garden City, Denise Schmitz and Betty Rossouw, both of Norton; a niece; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Michael.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Norton Cemetery, with the Rev. Vincent Thu Laing officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the American Legion, in care of Enfield Funeral Home, Norton.
Tommy Elton Hopkins
Tommy Elton Hopkins, 60, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at his home in Great Bend.
Born at Garden City on Dec. 1, 1941, he was the son of Floyd Earl and Inez Craton Green Hopkins.
A Great Bend resident for 48 years, moving from Garden City, he worked for Russ' Roofing Company for 20 years.
On Dec. 14, 1988, he married Beverly M. Winters at Topeka. She died Feb. 16, 1998. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Earl Hopkins; and a sister, Jean Geary.
He is survived by three sons, Leslie W. Hopkins and Tommy Ray Hopkins, both of Great Bend, and Darren Lynn Hopkins, Hutchinson; a daughter, Pamela Marie Hopkins, Hutchinson; a stepson, Harold S. Winters, Great Bend; three brothers, Floyd Hopkins, Ellinwood, William J. Hopkins, Walnut Grove, Mo., and Loren Hopkins, Ellsworth; a sister, Shirley Steimetz, Garden City; and seven grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and no service is planned.

Encarnacion Nevarez
Rosary for Encarnacion Nevarez, 53, will be 8 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena, S.J., officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Mr. Nevarez died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his home in Garden City.
He was born July 20, 1948, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Marin and Ipolita Beltran Nevarez.
Mr. Nevarez had been a Garden City resident since 1999, moving from Deerfield where he had lived since moving from Albuquerque, N.M., in 1991. His hobbies included listening to music and spending time with his family.
On June 23, 1971, he married Maria Guadalupe Santillan in Mexico. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Miguel Angel Nevarez, Encarnacion Nevarez Jr. and Alfredo Nevarez, all of the home; a daughter, Patricia Guadalupe Nevarez, Mexico; a brother, Manuel Nevarez, Albuquerque; four sisters, Enedina Nevarez and Soledad Nevarez, both of Mexico, Francisca Nevarez and Ramona Nevarez, both of Albuquerque; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jesus Manuel Nevarez.

Jay Jerome Holcomb
HUGOTON - Jay Jerome Holcomb, 64, of rural Hugoton, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
He was born Oct. 6, 1937, at Liberal, the son of Howard Randal and Elsie May Light Holcomb.
A lifetime resident of the Hugoton area, he was the city building inspector for Hugoton.
On July 22, 1956, he married Marilyn Janette Swan Quesenberry at Hugoton. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Jeff Holcomb, Leavenworth; a daughter, Janette Renteria, Guymon, Okla.; his mother, Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Bob Holcomb, Albuquerque, and Joe Holcomb, Guymon; three sisters, Helen Zamboni, Hermosa Beach, Calif., Hallie Williams, El Cajon, Calif., and Kristine Archuleta, Albuquerque; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Revs. Jeff Aenk and Larry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Thursday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
