Harry M. Unruh
MOUNDRIDGE - Harry M. Unruh, 91, died today, June 5, 2002, at his home in Moundridge.
He was born March 28, 1911, in McPherson County, the son of Abraham H. and Elizabeth Wenger Unruh.
On Feb. 17, 1935, he married Carrie Redger. She died May 26, 1935. He married Iva Buller on June 28, 1936. She died May 19, 1985. On Jan. 5, 1986, he married Hattie Nightengale. She died Nov. 17, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Ethel Mae Eicher; a grandson; a stepgranddaughter; a brother, Kenneth Koehn; and two sisters, Hazel Koehn and Twila Unruh.
Mr. Unruh moved from Monument to Scott City in 1986 and then to Moundridge in 1988. A farmer, he was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Moundridge.
He is survived by two sons, Weldo Unruh, Scott City, and Carl Unruh, Moundridge; five daughters, LaDean Unruh, Sharon Springs, Cora Peters, Moundridge, Lillian Shultz and Irene Smith, both of Clarksdale, Miss., and Elizabeth Unruh, Iroquois, S.D.; seven brothers, Harvey Unruh, Louisville, Ga., Homer, Conrad and Oliver Unruh, all of Moundridge, Clifford Unruh, Sharon Springs, Chester Unruh, Hesston, and Russell Unruh of Wallace; two sisters, Susanna Koehn, Moundridge, and Martha Becker, Avera, Ga.; 27 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and 42 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Gospel Mennonite Church, Moundridge. Dale Koehn and Richard Mininger, ministers, will officiate. An additional service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Scott Mennonite Church, Scott City. Charles Nightengale, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Scott Mennonite Church Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gospel Mennonite Church in Moundridge and from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Scott Mennonite Church in Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Central Home Care & Hospice of Newton, in care of Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Grace L. Kelch
HEALY - Grace L. Kelch, 86, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Jan. 1, 1916, at Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin and Emma St. Clair Falcon Krick.
A Healy resident since 1946, moving from Dayton, she was a homemaker. She belonged to Christ The King Lutheran Church at Dighton and the Royal Neighbors.
On Feb. 11, 1947, she married Walter Kelch at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by three daughters, Sharon Clark, Hutchinson, Elma DeCamp and Belinda Kelch, both of Dighton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Healy, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Christ The King Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home.
Lucille Dirks Friesen
MONTEZUMA - Lucille Dirks Friesen, 82, formerly of Atwater, Calif., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since June 6, 1994.
She was born May 5, 1920, at Halstead, the daughter of Gerhard and Carrie Unruh Dirks, and grew up in the Greensburg area.
On Oct. 29, 1947, she married Arthur S. Friesen at Greensburg. After their marriage, they moved to Dodge City for a short time before moving to Atwater where they lived until 1994.
A homemaker, Mrs. Friesen was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Andree Litwiller, Farmington, Ky., Barbara Nightingale and Cynthia Koehn, both of Scott City; two brothers, Willard Dirks, Greensburg, and Gerhard Dirks Jr., Carson City, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ida Koehn, Viola Koehn and Edna Wedel Smith; and three brothers, Allen, Lincoln and John Dirks.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethel Mennonite Church, Greensburg. Kalvin Salsbury, Mark Dirks and Gery Dirks, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.

Glenn R. Calvin
Glenn R. Calvin, 76, of Winfield and formerly of Syracuse and Tribune, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Jan. 24, 1926, at Winfield, the son of Ruel Fulton and Hildreth Marie Ritchie Calvin. He grew up and attended schools in Winfield.
During high school, he was drafted into the military. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Steamer Bay in the South Pacific. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he returned to Winfield and married Joyce C. Garoutte. They later divorced.
Mr. Calvin worked at Winfield Lumber Yard until 1954. He moved to Tribune, then to Syracuse and later to Dodge City, where he worked for various lumber companies. After retiring in 1992, he moved to Liberal. In 1999, he returned to Winfield.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, enjoyed listening to sports on the radio, taking walks and helping people, and was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program in Winfield.
He is survived by two sons, Van R. Calvin, Wichita, and Danny G. Calvin, Sumner, Wash.; a brother, Harold Calvin, Belle Plaine; a sister, Norma Jean McDade, Winfield; six grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Winfield. Burial will follow in Akron Cemetery
north of Winfield.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield, with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
John L. Melcum
John L. Melcum, 82, of Dodge City, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born June 6, 1919, at Roosevelt, Okla., the son of Lloyd Gilbert and Grace Ella Dean Melcum.
A Dodge City resident since 2000, moving from Sun City, Ariz., he was a right of way agent for Northern Natural Gas Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Melcum was a member of First Christian Church and the Senior Center, both at Dodge City, and belonged to American Legion Post No. 94 in Sun City West, Ariz. He served in the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific in World War II.
On April 21, 1946, he married Peggy Yount at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Paula Sue Wike, Glendale, Ariz., and Carla Lou Bailey, Dodge City; a brother, Earl Melcum, Sun City, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Mayes, Rio Rancho, N.M.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Dodge City, with the Rev. Gerald Rendel officiating. Burial will be later in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
There will be no public viewing as cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Cookson Hills Children's Home, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
Marcelino B. Pauda Sr.
ULYSSES - Vigil service for Marcelino B. Pauda Sr., 77, will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Louis Hoang officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Pauda died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born June 13, 1924, at Clairemont, Texas, the son of Luis and Guadalupe Baldanado Pauda.
A Ulysses resident for 30 years, he worked as a farm laborer. He was a member of Mary Queen Of Peace Catholic Church where he belonged to the choir and played the guitar. He enjoyed singing and playing the guitar for his family and friends.
On Oct. 28, 1949, he married Geneva Felan at Clovis, N.M. She survives. Other survivors include nine sons, Jesse Joe Pauda, Lubbock, Texas, Mark, Louie, Joe Luis, Angel and Sammy Pauda, all of Ulysses, Robert and Albert Pauda, both of Lakin, and Bill Pauda, Johnson City; four daughters, Daminga Esquivel, Geneva Ramos, Irene Sosa and Irma Pando, all of Ulysses; two brothers, George Pauda, Amarillo, Texas, and Ernest Pauda, Brownfield, Texas; three sisters, Manuela Ochoa, Happy, Texas, Lupe Davilla, Texas, and Tilde Salazar, Brownfield; 53 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Berardo Pauda; and a sister, Petra Martinez.

Raymond L. Strickland
HUGOTON - Raymond Lee Strickland, 75, of Hugoton, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Kansas Soldiers' Home in Fort Dodge.
He was born Dec. 5, 1926, at Selman, Okla., the son of William Edward and Myrtle Thompson Strickland. After his mother's death in October 1930, he was raised by her parents.
Mr. Strickland was a business operator/owner in the Hugoton area since 1958 and was widely known in the construction business and as an auctioneer for the past 15 years.
He was a three-time past master of the Hugoton Masonic Lodge, a longtime member of Hugoton Kiwanis Club and an exalted Rooster of the Hugoton Jaycees. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the 77th Infantry Division during the occupation of Japan.
On Nov. 22, 1946, he married Gracie B. Hall at Winchester, Ky. They moved to Stevens County in 1957. She died April 22, 2002.
He is survived by three sons, Farrell Ray Strickland, Indianapolis, Linn Wayne Strickland and Edward Lee Strickland, both of Hugoton; a brother, Charles Edward Strickland, Victoria, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Assembly Of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery, with Masonic and military graveside services conducted.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials for the family may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Vesta Stimatze
Vesta Stimatze, 89, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born July 6, 1912, in Stafford County, the daughter of Elza and Eva P. Mitchell Ross. She grew up in Stafford and Jewell counties and graduated from high school at Byers.
On Aug. 21, 1939, she married Orban Clyde Stimatze at Great Bend. They then moved to a farm in Gray County. Mrs. Stimatze was a dietary cook for Terrace Garden Care Center from 1966 until January 2002 and was a member of Pierceville Federated Church. Her hobbies included gardening, crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband died July 19, 1979. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Stimatze, Garden City, and Kenneth Sparks, Turon; a daughter, Gail Evenger, Great Bend; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pierceville Federated Church, with the Rev. Charles P. Wagher officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
