Jean 'Jeanie' Fulks
ULYSSES - Jean Elizabeth "Jeanie" Fulks, 55, of Ulysses, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita.
She was born March 17, 1947, at Garden City, the daughter of Burl and Mary Frances Tull White.
After graduating from Ulysses High School in 1964, she began nurse's training in Wichita and Pueblo, Colo. She worked as a nurse for several years in Colorado and Kansas, and had worked for a doctor in Ulysses and Garden City. She also had been a dispatcher for the Garden City Police Department and most recently was working as a dispatcher at the Grant County Law Enforcement Center.
She was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church at Ulysses, was an active volunteer for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program and DOVES, and had served in the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1972. An artist, she enjoyed creating numerous pieces of artwork.
She is survived by two brothers, Robert L. White, McLean, Ill., and Jerry F. White, Ulysses; a sister, Burla Stutzman, Ulysses; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather, L.B. "Bud" Gile; and a brother, William Glen White.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial, with military rites conducted, will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Elmer S. Anderson
FRIEND - Elmer S. Anderson, 91, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born June 26, 1910, at Balfour, N.D., the son of Andrew B. and Florence M. Mitchell Anderson. He attended school in North Dakota and Illinois before moving to Garden City with his family in 1930.
Mr. Anderson was engaged in farming for most of his life, working on various ranches, including the Hobson Ranch in Pueblo, Colo. In 1970, he returned to Scott County to work for his brother until his retirement. In 1998, he moved to northwest Finney County.
He was a member of Prairie View Church Of The Brethren at Friend, the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers, and the Hit & Miss Band of Scott City.
On Dec. 25, 1938, he married Ruth V. Jennings at Garden City. She died Jan. 15, 2001, at Scott City. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim; and a sister, Esther.
Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Palmer, Las Vegas; two sons, Arthur "Butch" Anderson, Canon City, Colo., and Arnold "Pete" Anderson, Florissant, Mo.; two brothers, Edgar Anderson, Clearwater, and Albert Anderson, Scott City; a sister, June McElhinny, Wichita; two brothers-in-law, including Otis Jennings of Lakin; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Prairie View Church Of The Brethren, Friend, with the Rev. Martin Gauby officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Church Cemetery, Friend.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Elsie Michael
Funeral for Elsie Michael, 89, of Hill City, will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel, Hill City, with the Rev. Ellen Carter officiating. Burial will be in Hill City Cemetery.
Mrs. Michael died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Dawson Place Nursing Home in Hill City.
She was born Oct. 29, 1912, at Ness City, the daughter of Henry and Anna Elizabeth Schneider Deines.
A lifetime resident of Hill City, Mrs. Michael was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, belonged to Club "32" and was a charter member of the Happy Homemakers Club, which originated in 1938. A homemaker, she had sold Avon for many years.
On Oct. 12, 1932, she married Vernon "Bill" Michael at Colby. He died Jan. 1, 1980. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Bill and Jim Michael; three brothers, Paul, Elmer and Leo Deines; and a sister, Esther Desmarteau.
She is survived by four sons, Donald Michael, Houston, Velton Michael, Littleton, Colo., Roger Michael, Lakewood, Colo., and Paul Michael, Hill City; three daughters, Shirley Wanker, Hill City, Teresa Bretz, Studley, and Debra Wente, Hays; a brother, Reinholdt Deines, Garden City; a sister, Virginia Cook, Mesa, Ariz.; 27 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

Waneta Z. Moore
MODOC - Funeral for Waneta Z. Moore, 77, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prairie View Church Of The Brethren, Friend, with the Rev. Martin Gauby officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Church Cemetery, Friend.
Mrs. Moore died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Hays Medical Center in Hays.
She was born July 15, 1924, in Scott County, the daughter of James Elmer and Francis Alta Mitchell Clinton.
A lifetime resident of Scott County, she was a homemaker and had worked for eight years in the Scott County Appraisers Office before retiring. She was a member of Prairie View Church Of The Brethren at Friend, and the VFW Auxiliary and HGL Club, both at Scott City.
On Nov. 19, 1942, she married Charles H. Moore at Barclay, Texas. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Charles Moore Jr., Modoc; two daughters, Veda Allen, Grand Junction, Colo., and Sharis Ballard, Inman; a brother, Ward Clinton, Scott City; three sisters, Francis Crist and Jeannine Schmidtt, both of Scott City, and Norma Lee Moore, Burlington, Colo.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and four sisters.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, with the family receiving friends 6:30 to 8 tonight, at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Joseph 'Joe' Koppel Sr.
Joseph Paul "Joe" Koppel Sr., 92, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Jan. 23, 1910, at Ellis, the son of John and Theresia Gashler Koppel. He spent his early years in Ellis and Hays.
In 1939, he moved to Garden City, where he met Norma Lee Duren. They were married Aug. 26, 1939, at Lakin. Mr. Koppel worked as a concrete/brick layer for many years, not retiring until he reached the age of 85. His special interests included fishing, working in his yard and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
His wife died May 3, 2000. He also was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.
He is survived by a son, Joe Koppel Jr., Garden City; a daughter, Jolene T. Morgan, Holcomb; a brother; five sisters; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Virginia Helfrich
SYRACUSE - Rosary and vigil service for Virginia Herbig Wilt Helfrich, 85, will be 7 MDT tonight at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Graveside service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mrs. Helfrich died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.
She was born June 24, 1916, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Harry and Fay Herbig Wilt.
After graduating from Shawnee Mission High School in Overland Park in 1934, she moved to Hamilton County where she met Fred C. Helfrich. They were married June 17, 1939.
She and her husband farmed south of Coolidge and started a family, which grew to include three sons and three daughters. A homemaker, she had worked at the Hamilton County Court House and Coolidge Port of Entry for a number of years.
Mrs. Helfrich moved to the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in 1996. She was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, an active member of the Extension Homemakers Unit and was a former 4-H leader in sewing. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games.
Her husband died Dec. 23, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, John L. "Jack Helfrich, in 1987, and Robert F. Helfrich in 2000; and a daughter, Judith Ann Helfrich, in 1967.
She is survived by a son, Richard F. "Dick" Helfrich, Coolidge; two daughters, Nancy McBride, Holcomb, and Margaret V. "Peggy" Helfrich, Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Shirley Ann Dyer, Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters-in-law, Gala and Tish Helfrich, both of Syracuse; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ida Mae Slater
ULYSSES - Ida Mae Slater, 72, of Ulysses, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
She was born April 1, 1930, at Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Robert William and Ida Bakken Black.
In 1949, she married Harold Lester Slater.
Survivors include a son, David W. Slater, Ulysses; and a sister, Marie Harris, Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Graveside service is planned for later in Albert Lea, Minn.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.
