Mary M. Hopkins
Mary M. Hopkins, 85, the founder and lifetime director of Garden City's Beef Empire Days event, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born July 10, 1916, at Blaine, Colo., the daughter of Felix and Mamie Herbert Mundell. She attended schools in Blaine and Bartlett, Colo., graduated from high school at Springfield, Colo., and earned a degree in education from the University of Colorado.
She taught school in Colorado at Pritchett, Springfield and LaJunta before moving to Garden City to teach in 1945. She later became the office manager and bookkeeper for Brookover Feed Yard, was an associate of Brookover Enterprises and Security Farms, and was involved with farming and cattle feeding for the Brookover Company and for her family's ranch in the area of Walsh, Colo.
Mrs. Hopkins was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church of Garden City, a lifetime member of Order of Eastern Star No. 359, belonged to the University of Colorado Alumni Association, Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, Finney County Historical Society and the Finney County Public Library. Her special interests were reading and being involved with Garden City area activities.
In 1947, she married Charles Allan Hopkins at Garden City.
She is survived by two sisters, Jane Mundell, Denver, and Marge Hale, Loveland, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband and a brother, Robert Mundell.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday in Minneapolis Cemetery
near Walsh. A remembrance service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at Garnand Funeral Home.

Milton A. 'Stubby' Gabel
Milton Anthony "Stubby" Gabel, 68, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Ness County Hospital in Ness City.He was born Nov. 14, 1933, at Ness City, the son of Pete and Martina Meis Gabel.He is survived by his companion, Albina Besperat, LaCrosse; six sons, Ronnie, Donnie and Terry, all of Ness City, Gary, Great Bend, Kelly, Oakley, and Tim, Garden City; two daughters, Debbie Overocker, Garden City, and Sherry Castor, Ness City; four brothers, Leo T. Gabel, Forsyth, Mo., Pete Gabel, Portsmith, R.I., "Cactus" Gabel, Abilene, and Gene Gabel, Ness City; and four sisters, Nita Brackney, Ness City, Marge Leiker, Aurora, Colo., Patti Weigle, Lakewood, Colo., and Bonnie Rebel, Ness City. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Theresa Gabel and Brenda Zeller; four brothers, Chuck, Rusty, Delbert and Hubert; an infant brother; and an infant sister.
Parish vigil will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Gregory LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Monday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Church or Sacred Heart School, both in care of the funeral home.
Bailea Hernandez
Bailea Hernandez, infant daughter of Steve Jr. and Anita Hernandez, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born May 24, 2002, in Garden City. She is survived by her parents; grandparents, Luis and Corina Mendoza, Cesar and Marivel Martinez and Steven Sr. and Irene Hernandez, all of Garden City.
Other survivors include three uncles, Eric Martinez, Ceasar Martinez Jr. and Brandon Hernandez, all of Garden City; and three aunts, Shawna Hernandez, Misha Hernandez and Danielle Hernandez, all of Garden City.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Valley View Cemetary in Garden City. Burial will follow.

Ruth E. Hagelgantz
Ruth E. Hagelgantz, 85, of Bazine, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at the Lane County Long Term Care Center in Dighton.
She was born Feb. 8, 1917, at LaCrosse, the daughter of John E. and Mollie Rüger Miller.
On May 3, 1937, she married Wesley H. Hagelgantz at Bison. They lived in Great Bend for 30 years prior to moving to Bazine in 1994. He died June 18, 1997. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alex and David Miller; a sister, Martha Smith; an infant daughter, Luanne Hagelgantz; and a granddaughter.
A homemaker, Mrs. Hagelgantz was a member of the Bazine Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Calvin Hagelgantz, Garden City, and Robert Hagelgantz, Bazine; a daughter, Elaine Johnson, Bazine; a brother, Samuel A. Miller, LaCrosse; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Seventh-day Adventist Church, LaCrosse, with the Rev. Ed Jumper officiating. Burial will be in Bazine Cemetery.

Thomas M. Kirk
Thomas M. Kirk, 80, of Garden City, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Scott County, the son of J.E. and Della Blachly Kirk. He grew up in Scott County, graduated from Scott City High School and attended Kansas State University before entering the U.S. Army during World War II.
After returning to Scott City, he was the owner of Kirk Grain Co. He later became the manager of the Breyfogle Ranch and moved to Garden City in 1975. He was a member of the VFW of Scott City and enjoyed collecting western art.
On Dec. 11, 1948, he married Doris E. Breyfogle at Loveland, Colo. She died Sept. 12, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harold, Robert, Henry and Harlam Kirk; and two sisters, Geneva Mortensen and Coriene Kirk.
Survivors include a brother, Art Kirk, Spokane, Wash.; and three sisters, Joy Ottaway and Helen Bastin, both of Scott City, and Mary Belle Eberly, Needham, Mass.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Michael McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Ralph O. O'Neal
SCOTT CITY - Ralph O. O'Neal, 86, of Hutchinson, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Wesley Towers, Ralph Thorne Unit in Hutchinson.
He was born April 16, 1916, at Orient, Iowa, the son of John and Myrtle Yates O'Neal.
A longtime resident of Scott City before moving to Hutchinson in 1998, he was retired from Betts Baking Co. He also had worked as a route salesman and in a self-employed dairy business. He was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City.
On Feb. 18, 1939, he married Margaret McEuen at Salina. She died Nov. 2, 1974, at Garden City. He married Isabelle Kessler on Sept. 18, 1977, at Scott City. She died Nov. 4, 1995, at Scott City. He also was preceded in death by five brothers, Glendle, Johnny, Charles, Connie and Russell; and a sister, Velta Bird.
He is survived by a son, Rep. Mike O'Neal of Hutchinson; two grandchildren; two brothers, Rex O'Neal, Flagler, Colo., and Robert "Bob" O'Neal, Derby; and a sister, Margaret Weaver, Lawton, Okla.
Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Friends of The Kansas State Fair, in care of the funeral home.
Henry 'Hank' Redger
MONTEZUMA - Henry Albert "Hank" Redger, 61, of Montezuma, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in rural Ingalls, after a sudden illness.
He was born May 26, 1940, at Ingalls, the son of Henry and Julia Unruh Redger.
A lifetime resident of the area, he worked for Collingwood Grain at Montezuma and was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite at Ingalls. He enjoyed his family activities.
On April 21, 1963, he married Sharon Kay Stover at Denver. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Jim Redger, El Campo, Texas; two daughters, Kristina Wiebe of Durham and Lisa C. Redger, Montezuma; a brother, Don Redger, Ingalls; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Ivan Redger; and four sisters, Lois Redger, Elsie Redger, Bernice Koehn and Helen Schmidt.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Hope Mennonite Church, Ingalls. James Koehn, Wilbur Koehn and Stan Smith, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Living Hope Church Cemetery, Ingalls.

Agnes C. Metzen
Rosary for Agnes C. Metzen, 90, of Garden Plain, will be 8 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Philip Allen officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Garden Plain.
Mrs. Metzen died Monday, May 20, 2002, in Cheney.
She was born Nov. 22, 1911, at Willowdale, the daughter of Adam and Mary Weber Bayer.
A homemaker, Mrs. Metzen was a member of the Altar Society.
On June 6, 1939, she married Leo Metzen at Wichita. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, Melvin N. Metzen, Scott City; a daughter, Frances Treichel, Alton, Ill.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas or the Cheney Golden Age Home, both in care of the mortuary.
Evelyn Nadine Limon
SATANTA - Funeral for Evelyn Nadine Limon, 55, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Ray Tweed officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Mrs. Limon died Monday, May 20, 2002, at her home in Satanta.
She was born May 30, 1946, at Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Lloyd and Leota Merritt Ames.
On June 6, 1964, she married Enrique "Rick" Limon at Kenduskeag, Maine. They moved from Kenduskeag to Satanta in September 1966.
Mrs. Limon worked for Satanta District Hospital as a ward clerk and certified nurse's aide. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Satanta, volunteered at the Happy Agers, enjoyed bowling, visiting lakes and fishing, playing cards and going to garage sales. She also enjoyed her family activities, spending time with her grandchildren and traveling back to Maine each summer to visit her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Rick Limon, Dalhart, Texas; two daughters, Tina Brewer, Concordia, and Misti Hall, Sublette; her mother, East Corinth, Maine; three brothers, Lloyd Ames, Kenduskeag, Charles Ames, East Corinth, and Doug Ames, Newark, Ohio; five sisters, Joyce Boone, Ann Lenz, Nancy Campbell, and her twin sister, Elenor Jackson, all of East Corinth, and Louine Sullivan of Boston; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Donald Ames.
