Josephine Urban
Vigil service for Josephine Urban, 93, of Hoisington, was 7 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, followed by an Altar Society rosary. Funeral Mass was 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, with the Rev. Paschal Klein officiating. Burial was in St. John Cemetery, Hoisington.
Mrs. Urban died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington.
She was born June 8, 1908, at Antonio, the daughter of Gerard and Catherine Stecklein Pfannenstiel.
A Hoisington resident since 1942, moving from Ellis County, she was a homemaker. She belonged to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both at Hoisington.
On Nov. 9, 1927, she married Joseph August Urban at Pfeifer. He died Aug. 19, 1993. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Zimmerman; and 11 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by five sons, Julius, Hoisington, Melvin, Ellinwood, Ervin, Garden City, Arsenius, Seward, and Joseph Jr., Dodge City; six daughters, Lillian Beck, Hoisington, Johanna Brodie, Great Bend, Twilla Kush, Colorado Springs, Colo., Dolores Harris, Lorraine Wedman and Alberta Klein, all of Wichita; 37 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Hoisington Ambulance Service, both in care of the funeral home.
Margaret E. Fink
Margaret E. Fink, 88, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born March 12, 1914, at Palmer, the daughter of Henry C. and Frances Oelschlager Meyer. She attended parochial school at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer.
A longtime resident of Garden City, she had worked as a bookkeeper for 30 years for Champlin Service, Five Points Motor Co., and H & R Block.
Mrs. Fink was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City and belonged to the Prayer Tree and Ladies Afternoon Circle of the church. She also belonged to the Senior Center of Finney County, VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her yard work, bowling, reading and being with her grandsons.
On March 3, 1940, she married Ross B. Fink at Wichita. He died June 3, 1960. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ross B. Fink Jr.; and three brothers, Melvin, Arnold and Clarence Meyer.
She is survived by a daughter, Connie Meng, Ingalls; and two grandsons.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Velda Pauline Monninger
MONTEZUMA - Velda Pauline Monninger, 87, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.
Born Sept. 23, 1914, at Pawnee Rock, she was the daughter of John Upton and Louella Belle Gregory Menzie.
She attended Fort Hays Teachers College for one year and then taught school in Montezuma. She had worked as a supervisor at the lunch rooms at the Montezuma schools for many years.
Mrs. Monninger was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, belonged to the Bluelight Extension for many years, was a project leader for 4-H and belonged to the Gray County Homemaker Council. A homemaker, she enjoyed her family activities and working in the church. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making quilts.
On June 4, 1933, she married Jacob Ira Blackwelder at Montezuma. He died May 7, 1950. She married George R. Monninger on Dec. 31, 1951, at Montezuma. He died May 31, 1967. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert Eugene Blackwelder; and three brothers, Kenneth, Warren and Leonard Menzie.
She is survived by two daughters, Marlene Ullom and Louise Thomas, both of Montezuma; a daughter-in-law; a stepdaughter, Madge Monninger-Saville, Salina; a brother, Virgil Menzie, Ulysses; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Montezuma, with the Revs. Gene Eshleman and Rick Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Morningside Community Church Kitchen Fund, both at Montezuma, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
James Leland Allen
HUGOTON - James Leland Allen, 76, died on Friday, April 5, 2002, at Pioneer Manor, Hugoton.
He was born Aug. 17, 1925, to Orval H. Allen and Gertrude (Brooks) Allen at Satanta. He married Hazel Baslen on Dec. 6, 1944. She survives. They had three sons, Donald R. Allen, James A. Allen and Larry E. Allen.
He served in World War II in the United States Marines and received the Purple Heart. He was a farmer and stockman.
He moved to Hugoton in 1970, where he farmed and had a small, pre-condition feedlot and was a livestock buyer.
He was a member of the First Church of God, Hugoton. He was Sunday School superintendent for 14 years and served as president of the corporation and board of trustees. He started a bus ministry and taught the Adult Bible Class. He helped build the new church.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; an infant brother; one brother, Eugene Allen; and one sister, Peggy Evans.
Survivors include his three sons, Donald R. Allen, Del Norte, Colo., James A. Allen, Garden City, and Larry E. Allen, Parma, Mich.; two brothers, Brooks Allen, Palisade, Colo., and Warren Dale Allen, Denmark; one sister, JoAnne Pinkerton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Church of God, Hugoton, with Pastor Bill Vincent officiating and burial in the Ulysses Cemetery.
Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established for the First Church of God and may be mailed to Paul's Funeral Home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Karina Estrella
SCOTT CITY - Karina Estrella, 10 months, died at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita on Friday, April 5, 2002. She was born May 10, 2001, in Scott City, the daughter of Saul and Leticia Amezcua Estrella.
She is survived by her parents; one brother, Rafael Estrella, Scott City; and her grandparents, Raymond and Juanita Amezcua, Scott City, and Andres and Leticia Hernandez, Arkansas City.
Visitation was to be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Graveside services were to be at 4 p.m. today at the Scott County Cemetery, Scott City. Rev. David H. Kraus was to officiate. Burial was to be in the Scott County Cemetery.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, can be given to the Karina Estrella Memorial Fund in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home.
B. Elwanda Cauthon
SYRACUSE - B. Elwanda Cauthon, 78, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born Feb. 14, 1924, at Hico, Texas, the daughter of Eagle and Estelle Sowell. When the was 8, the family left Texas and settled in southeast Colorado. She attended schools in Two Buttes and Holly, where she graduated in 1942.
She became a Christian while living in Two Buttes and throughout her life the church remained an integral part of her life. She was an active member of Southern Baptist Church in Syracuse, and also belonged to Lieurance Music Club and the Book Cub.
On Nov. 1, 1942, she married A.D. Cauthon. Because of his work with Santa Fe, they lived in Rocky Ford and Holly, Colo., before settling in Syracuse in 1948.
Mrs. Cauthon began sewing at the age of 5, making clothes for her doll, and continued to enjoy sewing. She also enjoyed playing cards, driving around the countryside to look at birds and other wildlife, singing, accompanying her husband on his golf cart, doing crossword puzzles and visiting with her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Rick Cauthon, Fort Worth, Texas, and Debra Jennings, Spokane, Wash.; a daughter-in-law; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Gladys Clark and Barbara Sowell, both of Richland, Wash.; a brother, Harley Sowell, Fresno, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Buck and Ancel Sowell; and a son, Edwin.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Southern Baptist Church, Syracuse. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST today and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT Sunday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
Dorothy Eva Graham Blackmon
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Dorothy Eva Graham Blackmon, 87, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Friend.
Mrs. Blackmon died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 6, 1914, at Clinton, Mo., the daughter of James Elmer and Francis Alta Mitchell Clinton.
A Scott City resident since 1924, moving from Clinton, she moved to Shallow Water in 1948. She was a cook in numerous restaurants in Scott City and Dodge City and was a member of VFW Auxiliary of Scott City.
On Sept. 11, 1933, she married James E. Graham at Scott City. On March 19, 1965, she married Gurtis Blackmon at Bakersfield, Calif. He died in October 1972 at Dodge City. Her first husband died on Jan. 3, 1975, at Garden City. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a son, two daughters, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters and one brother.
She is survived by four sons, Dan Graham, Hugoton, Preston Graham, Spearman, Texas, Richard Graham, Guymon, Okla., and Willie Graham, Stafford, Mo.; seven daughters, Ada A. Turley, Salida, Colo., Jo Mary Schaffer and Janie Benish, both of Spearville, Glenda S. Macy, Oberlin, Eva E. Smith, Shallow Water, Rose E. Elliott, Petaluma, Calif., and Sarah A. Graham, Bemidji, Minn.; a brother, Ward Clinton, Scott City; four sisters, Francis Crist, Jeannine Schmidtt and Waneta Moore, all of Scott City, and Norma Lee Moore, Burlington, Colo.; 42 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Health Department or Southwest Care of the Aging in Dodge City, both in care of the funeral home.
Maynard Lee Maddux
Maynard Lee Maddux, 71, a former area resident, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at a hospital in Littleton, Colo.
He was born Nov. 24, 1930, at Cambridge, Kan., the son of Oscar and Edith Lowe Maddux. He attended school in Cambridge and Deerfield and graduated from Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla.
Mr. Maddux had lived in Pine Junction and Highland Ranch, Colo. He taught for 27 years in the same Denver public school and received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1973. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956, was a member of the VFW, tutored children, was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed mountain living.
In 1952, he married Willeta Shephard at Bethany. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Lynthria Kaye Maddux Boss, Elizabeth, Colo.; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; a brother, Howard Maddux, Tulsa, Okla.; and a sister, Marilyn Maddux Holdeman, Garden City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral was March 20 at Olinger Moore Howard Berkeley Park Chapel in Denver. Burial was March 23 in Hope Cemetery
at Helena, Okla.
