Alice Denby Wade
Memorial service for Alice Denby Wade, 77, a former Garden City resident, will be 4 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, Okla. Committal service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Woodland Cemetery
Chapel.
Mrs. Wade died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at her home in Cleveland.
She was born Aug. 22, 1925, at Garden City, the daughter of Arlington and Dorothy Lawrence. She attended Garden City schools, graduating from Garden City High School in 1943. After graduation, she moved to Lubbock, Texas, where she earned an associate's degree from Texas Tech.
On April 14, 1945, she married Carroll Wade at Sebring, Fla., as he was stationed there in the Army Air Corp. The couple returned to Garden City, where they raised their three children. They moved to Tulsa, Okla., in 1963 and to Cleveland in 1965.
Mrs. Wade was employed as office manager of the Cleveland Area Hospital for nearly 26 years, serving as interim hospital administrator during a portion of her career. She was a lifelong Presbyterian serving as treasurer, Sunday School teacher, elder and numerous other positions within the church. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland for nearly 37 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and playing bingo, cards and Uno.
She is survived by two daughters, Harriett Shugart, Omaha, Neb., and Carol Ann Svajgl, Somerset, Ky.; a son, John Wade, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; seven grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Lewis, Garden City; and four nieces. Her husband died Oct. 19, 1973. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Alice Denby Wade
August 22, 1924 - April 10, 2002
Alice Denby Wade was born August 22, 1924 in Garden City, Kansas. She was the daughter of Arlington and Dorothy Lawrence. Alice was raised and attended school in Garden City, graduating from Garden City High School in 1943.
Upon graduation, Alice moved to Lubbock, Texas where she obtained an Associate Degree from Texas Tech. Alice was then married to Carroll Wade on April 14, 1945 in Sebring, Florida as Carroll was stationed there in the Army Air Corp.
The couple then retuned to Garden City where they initially raised their three children, Harriett, Carol Ann and John. They moved to Tulsa in 1963 and then on to Cleveland in 1965. Carroll preceded her in death on October 19, 1973.
Alice was employed as Office Manager of the Cleveland Area Hospital for nearly twenty-six years, serving as Interim Hospital Administration during a portion of her career. Alice was a lifelong Presbyterian serving as Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Elder and numerous other positions within the Church. She has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland for nearly thirty-seven years.
Alice was a fun loving spirit and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing bingo and also loved to play cards and Uno. She passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at her home in Cleveland at the age of seventy-seven years, seven months and eighteen days. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Harriett and Col. Gary Shugart USAF, Omaha, Nebraska, Carol Ann and B. J. Svajgl, Somerset, Kentucky; a son and his wife, John and Carrie Wade, Coeur D Alene, Idaho; seven grandchildren, LTJG Tom R. Lunsford III, USN, Alexis Lunsford, Sara Ann Svajgl, Mary Alice Svajgl, Grant Wade, Nicolas Shugar and Ryan Shugart, a sister, Margaret Lewis, Garden City, Kansas; and four nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Oklahoma. A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at the Woodland Cemetery
Chapel. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
Evelyn Bryan
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Evelyn Bryan, 49, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Revs. Dale Cummins, Mike McGuire and John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Bryan died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at her home in Scott City.
She was born Oct. 10, 1952, at Guatemala City, Guatemala, the daughter of Oscar D. and Lidia Solis Mansilla. She graduated from the American High School in Guatemala, from Sam Houston State University in Texas, and from the RN program at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
Mrs. Bryan became a U.S. citizen in 1984. A Scott City resident since 1989, moving from Conroe, Texas, she had been employed by St. Catherine Hospital and was a recipient of the "Excellence in Nursing" award.
She was a member of Gospel Fellowship Church at Shallow Water, and the High Plains Study Club and Gideons, both at Scott City.
On July 27,1974, she married Joel Bryan at Guatemala City. He survives. She is also survived by a son, James Bryan, Topeka; three daughters, Menely Linenberger, Neodosha, Margaret Bryan and Emily Bryan, both of Scott City; two sisters, Miriam Bryan, Jasper, Ind., and Ivette Mansilla, Dallas; her mother, Guatemala City; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her father.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Gospel Fellowship Church or the Evelyn Bryan Nursing Student Scholarship Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
B.W. Smallwood
B.W. Smallwood, 81, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 27, 1921, at Fort Scott, the son of Henry and Mary Lager Smallwood. He grew up in Fort Scott and attended schools there.
After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Fort Scott and worked as a jobber for Conoco Oil. In 1950, he moved to Garden City and bought a Texaco bulk distributing plant and opened several Texaco service stations. He retired as the owner/operator of Smallwood Oil Co.
Mr. Smallwood was a member of the Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9 and Elks Lodge No. 1404, both at Garden City. He enjoyed following his son in sports, fishing and golfing.
On Oct. 7, 1941, he married Rosemary J. Miller at Fort Scott. She died May 17, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, a sister and a brother.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Smallwood, Phoenix; two daughters, Susan Sanderson, Larned, and Janice Weiser, San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Ray Raley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Crippled Children's Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Otto Glen Barnes
SYRACUSE - Memorial graveside service for Otto Glen Barnes, 75, will be 2 p.m. MDT Saturday in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.
He was born Feb. 2, 1927, at Lebanon, Mo., the son of Benjamin "Ben" and Elizabeth Ann "Lizzy" Thomas Barnes. He attended school in Missouri before moving to Syracuse where he resided for 25 years.
Mr. Barnes worked at the McMillan Ranch in Lamar, Colo., at the Wylie (Colo.) Sheriffs Department and then for the City of Syracuse, where he retired in the 1980s. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, doing mechanical work and listening to the "Swap Shop" program on the radio.
He is survived by three sons, Lester and Dale Barnes, both of Syracuse, and Thomas Barnes, Irving, Texas; three daughters, Debbie Zundt, Garden City, Dorothy Cleveland, Amarillo, Texas, and Janet Barnes, Wichita; a sister, Genevieve, Lebanon; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Henry and Robert Barnes; a daughter, Beth Gaylord; and seven brothers and sisters, George, Lafe, Roby, Eddie, Lawrence, Phyllis and Jenny.

Arthur L. 'Bud' Danner
HUGOTON - Arthur L. "Bud" Danner, 72, of Hugoton, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Baptist-St. Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born April 19, 1929, at Gruver, Texas, the son of Arthur Hayden and Goldie Ruth Gooch Danner. In 1937, the family moved to Guymon, Okla., where he attended school.
On Oct. 27, 1951, he married Robbie Morris at Clayton, N.M. They moved to Amarillo where he worked for Bausch & Lomb. In 1952, they went to Dalhart, Texas, where he farmed and ranched with his brother-in-law, Charles Grice. In 1953, they returned to Guymon where he worked for Hitch Farms until 1974. He then transferred to Moscow, Kan., where he worked until early 1978. In mid-1978, he went to work for Stevens County on the road crew. He retired from the county in April 1994.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, V. Randy Danner, Woodward, Okla., and Tim K. Danner, Hugoton; a brother, Don D. Danner, Amarillo; two sisters, Lu Grice, Dalhart, and Betty Sledge, Guymon; seven grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hayden Danner; and three sisters, Tootsie Hanus, Lorene Price and Nadine Hackler.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Terrel Giddens officiating. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Monday in Texhoma (Texas) Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Susan Garritsen
Memorial service for Susan Garritsen, 45, a former Garden City resident, was to be 2 p.m. today at Emanuel Mennonite Church, Onida, S.D.
Mrs. Garritsen, of Onida, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, S.D.
She was born Oct. 9, 1956, at Compton, Calif., the daughter of Jack and Maxine Gover Robinson. While growing up, she moved a lot as her stepfather was in the U.S. Navy. The family lived mostly in California.
On Dec. 31, 1999, she married Terry Garritsen at their home in Onida. A homemaker, she had lived in Onida for four years. She loved the outdoors, fishing and camping. She also loved kids and had operated a daycare while in Garden City.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lisa George, Garden City; three sons, Jake McAlister, Lansing, Steve Lee and Shane Munoz, both of Onida; her stepfather, Billy L. Davis, Lebanon, Mo.; two stepsons, Jeremy Lindeman, Roseu, Minn., and Jamie Lindeman, Lake Benton, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Jessica Lindeman, Lake Benton; three sisters, Sandy Lee, Lakin, Norma Herron, Lebanon, and Brenda Voigt, Jetmore; and two brothers, Roy Robinson, Lakin, and Billy Davis, Hayden, Colo. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Davis; her father, Jack Henry Robinson; and several aunts and uncles.

Mary Atterberry
DIGHTON - Funeral for Mary Atterberry, 89, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Atterberry died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Lane County Long Term Care Unit in Dighton.
She was born May 15, 1912, in Lane County, the daughter of John and Nancy Ellen Walters Murphy. She grew up on the family farm where she was born in Lane County, later moving to Dighton and graduating from Lane County Community High School.
On Aug. 5, 1931, she married Roy Atterberry at Ness City. She worked alongside her husband on the farm. A homemaker, she kept busy attending her daughter's many horse shows and sporting events, a tradition she continued with her grandson. She also enjoyed bowling, ceramics and traveling with her husband, and was an excellent seamstress and cook.
Mrs. Atterberry was a longtime resident of Lane County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, a charter member of the Lane County Saddle Club and a former member of Rebekah Lodge of Dighton.
Her husband died Feb. 23, 1994. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Mike Murphy; and three sisters, Nellie Mumma, Kathryn Moomaw and Mable Hutchins.
She is survived by a daughter, Karen Duncan, Liberal; a grandson; four brothers, Woodrow Murphy, Dighton, Jim Murphy, Scott City, Larry Murphy, Wichita, and Carlos Murphy, Hutchinson; and two sisters, Alice Gabel, Ellis, and Betty Whiting, Newton.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
