Iva I. Bricker

ULYSSES - Iva I. Bricker, 85, of Ulysses, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born Sept. 12, 1916, at Mooringsport, La., the daughter of John Oliver and Ruth Leafee Stevens Hale.

On May 5, 1936, she married Clyde H. Bricker at Natoma. They moved from Gorham to Ulysses in October 1946. He died March 29, 1968. She also was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

Mrs. Bricker worked for the schools as the head cook from 1947 until 1968. After the death of her husband, she returned to school and received her licensed practical nurse degree. She had many hobbies, including crocheting, quilting, gardening and raising flowers. She also was interested in genealogy, enjoyed visiting with people and helping those in need. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited many countries during the 1970s.

A born-again Christian, she was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church and Eastern Star, both at Ulysses.

She is survived by two daughters, Norma Jean Bricker and Warrena I. Bricker Balcom, both of Ulysses; a brother, John Carroll Hale, Jefferson City, Mo.; two sisters, Pauline Bryant and Edna Williams, both of Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Delma Hacker Baker

Delma Hacker Baker, 62, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at El Cajon, Calif.

She is survived by two sons, Jeffery Baker, San Diego, and Karl Baker, Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Jalane Langevin, El Cajon; four grandchildren; two sisters, Kathryn Richmeier, Garden City, and Donna Thompson, Lakewood, Colo.; and a brother, Charles Hacker, Chandler, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her father, Delmar Hacker; and her mother, Iva Hacker.

A home health care professional, her hobby was charcoal drawing.

Graveside visitation and burial will be 11 a.m. May 31 in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.

Hope Ann Henning

HOLCOMB - Graveside service for Hope Ann Henning, 25, was 3 p.m. Friday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City, with the Rev. Sam Owen officiating.

Miss Henning died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Feb. 28, 1977, at Orange, Calif., the daughter of Lawrence Eugene and Lani (Castro) Castro.

She is survived by her stepfather and her mother, William and Lani Wilkinson, Lakin; a stepbrother, J.R. Wilkinson, Russell; and two brothers, Christopher Henning, Chanute, and David Moxley, Lakin.

Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel of Hill City was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Etta (Holden) Lewis

SYRACUSE - Frances Etta (Holden) Lewis, 75, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Syracuse, the daughter of Harold Guy Holden and Indema Elizabeth (Gregory) Holden. They preceded her in death.

She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1953 and lived in Syracuse most of her life.

On Dec. 28, 1945, she married Charles Richard Bradley of Price, Utah. They had two children, Loretta Jean and David Richard.

On March 23, 1956, she married Harry Floyd Lewis. He preceded her in death.

She attended the Salt City Business College in Hutchinson and graduated from the Del Mar College School of Nursing in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a licensed practical nurse. During her nurse career, she was an LPN at the Donahue Memorial Hospital, the Hamilton county Hospital, and the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, all in Syracuse. She then worked at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle, the Doctors Hospital, the Memorial Hospital, and in the open heart surgery unit of the Sphon Hospital, all in Corpus Christi. She retired in 1993.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Holly, Colo., the Ladies Auxiliaries patriarchs Militant in Lamar, Colo., Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge in Truth or Consequences, the Rebekah Lodge and LAPM in Las Cruces, N.M., Eastern Star in Lamar and attended the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ralph Ray Holden; her special friend, Ray Henson; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, David Richard Lewis of Amarillo, Texas; one daughter, Loretta Jean Stimatze of Syracuse; one sister, Florence Geneva Smith of Carthage, Mo.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home in Syracuse 9 a.m. (MDT) to 8 p.m Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. (MDT) Tuesday at the Wesleyan Church in Syracuse, with a graveside committal service to follow at the Syracuse Cemetery. Pastor Rod Collins will preside.

Antonio Rivas

ULYSSES - Antonio Rivas, 68, of Ulysses, died April 13, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Feb. 7, 1934, at San Pedro de las Colonias Coahuila Partido, Juarez, Mexico, the son of Cecilio and Angela (Chavez) Rivas. A Ulysses resident since 1974, he was a farmer.

On Nov. 29, 1983, he married Aracelia Ochoa at New Mexico. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Lorenzo Rivas, of Holcomb, and Carlos Rivas, of Colorado; five daughters, Maria Antonia Trevino, of Oklahoma; Alicia Rodriguez, of Ulysses; Armida Ramirez, of Texas, Priscilla Rivas and Aracelia Rivas, both of Ulysses; two brothers, Manuel Rivas, of Mexico, and Satanta Rivas, of Texas; two sisters, Simona Perez, of Mexico, and Epifania Griego, of Mexico; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Faustino Rivas, and one sister, Eduarda Rivas.

An evening service will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses. Funeral service will be 10 p.m. Monday at Primera Iglesia Bautista, Ulysses, with Rev. Manual Perez officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, 2 to 8 p.m. today and Sunday. Memorials may be given to the Antonio Rivas Memorial Scholarship for the Hispanic Educational Foundation or to Antonio Rivas memorial fund, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Raymond O. Reeves

Raymond O. Reeves, 71, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at his home in Dodge City.

He was born July 18, 1930, in Lane County, the son of Guy Jr. and Beulah Bruner Reeves. He grew up in Beeler, graduated from Beeler High School and attended Dodge City Community College.

After serving in the U.S. Army, which he joined on May 24, 1951, he lived in Dighton until moving to Dodge City in 1972. He worked as a building trades instructor at Dodge City USD 443, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Dodge City Nazarene Church, the American Legion at Dodge City and the Retired Teachers Association.

On May 16, 1951, he married Gloria Burnett at Clayton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Dodge City; two sons, Don and Daryl Reeves, both of Dodge City; two daughters, Cynthia Hammond, Garden City, and Cathy Heikes, Dodge City; two brothers, Morris Reeves, Dodge City, and Leon Reeves, WaKeeney; a sister, Myrna Bidwell, Lakewood, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Dodge City Nazarene Church, with the Rev. Michael Burns officiating.

Visitation hours are from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the Dodge City Nazarene Church Coffee House, in care of the funeral home.

LaVern J. Mader

ULYSSES - LaVern J. Mader, 66, of Ulysses, died April 19, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 8, 1935, at Offerle, the son of Vernon and Mary (Konrade) Mader. A Ulysses resident since 1962, he was a welder at Ulysses Irrigation and T-L Irrigation, Ulysses, and retired in 1997.

He was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses, and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.

On Dec. 27, 1955, he married Delores Ratzlaff at Garden City. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Steve Mader, of Ulysses; Paul Mader, of Austin, Texas; and Chris Mader, of Ulysses; three daughters, Pam Ellis, of Rock Springs, Wyo.; Cathy Fischer, of Ulysses; and Deidra Cantrell, of China Springs, Texas; two brothers, Leonard Mader, of Holcomb; Robert Mader, of Garden City; two sisters, Mary Ann Bennett, of Holcomb; and Marylin Reese, of Ulysses; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Tim Mader, one sister, Janet Peterson and two grandchildren.

Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Louis Hoang and Rev. Gilbert Herman presiding. Graveside and burial will be 2 p.m. at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Friends may call Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, 10 a.m to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the Grant County Relay for Life, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Sister Aquinata Penka

A wake service for Sister Aquinata Penka, O.P., 91, of Great Bend, will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, Great Bend. Liturgy of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at the same location. Burial will be in the Sisters' Resurrection Cemetery, with the Revs. Gerald Hammeke and Eugene Kenny officiating.

She died Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary at Great Bend.

Born Mary Anne Penka on Sept. 10, 1910, she was the daughter of Emil and Hedwig Heger Penka. She entered the Dominican Sisters' community on May 19, 1926, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 20, 1929. She celebrated 70 years of religious profession in 1999.

She began her ministry as an elementary teacher. After completing her nurse's education, she gave the rest of her ministerial life to health care and instruction of student nurses. She served as director of nurses at St. Rose Hospital and for the Dominican School of Nursing, both in Great Bend, was councilor on the Dominican Sisters' leadership team, and was director of the associate nursing program at Garden City Community College.

After completing a life of ministry in health care, she cared for shrines and gardens at the Dominican Sisters' motherhouse in Great Bend, and it was there that she retired.

Survivors include a brother, Julius Penka, Hoisington; and two sisters, Sister Eleanor, Great Bend, and Helen Kalina, Hoisington.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the convent. Memorials are suggested to the Dominican Sisters' Retirement Fund, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, KS 67530-3692, or to the Sister Aquinata Penka Endowment Scholarship Fund.
