Ellen J. Eaman
Ellen J. Eaman, 77, of Westminster, Colo., died Sunday, April 14, 2002.
She was born May 29, 1924, at Garden City, the daughter of Beecher and Elsie Breyfogle. She finished schools with honors from country elementary through junior college in Finney County. She was writing the society column for The Garden City Telegram when she married Tom Eaman of Lakin in May 1947.
A graduate librarian, she served libraries in Kansas, Texas and Colorado. She was a charter member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood, Colo. Her interests included gardening, cooking, knitting, traveling, mysteries and refinishing furniture.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Frances; a son, James; three grandchildren; three nephews; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Funeral was 10 a.m. April 19 at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, Lakewood, with entombment following in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Carlos Osorio
Evening service for Carlos Osorio, 62, was 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Graveside service was to be 10 this morning in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Jose Marie Alvarez officiating.
Mr. Osorio died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his home in Garden City.
He was born July 4, 1939, at El Salvador, the son of Aurelino and Amalia Osorio Calderon.
A Garden City resident since 1994, moving from Los Angeles, he had worked at IBP and other beef plants. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
On May 10, 1996, he married Etelvina Calderon at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by four sons, Carlos Javier Osorio, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Victor Manuel Osorio, Canada, Carlos Alberto Osorio and Daniel Osorio, both of the home; three daughters, Martha Hilda Osorio, Los Angeles, Maritza Isabel Osorio, Central Falls, R.I., and Sylvia Del Socorro Osorio, of the home; several brothers and sisters in El Salvador and California; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joe Walter Laird
ULYSSES - Funeral for Joe Walter Laird, 88, of Ulysses, was to be 2 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton and the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial was to follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Laird died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Aug. 16, 1913, at Haviland, the son of Frank Walter and Leah Evah Hayse Laird.
On June 3, 1935, he married Vada Viola Vick at Meade. They moved from Liberal to Ulysses on Oct. 24, 1949. She died Sept. 26, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Walter Laird; a brother, Francis Claude Laird; and a sister, Geneva Belle Thorpe.
Mr. Laird was retired after working as the general superintendent of Mesa Petroleum Co.-Hugoton Production. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Lions Club, both at Ulysses, belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Hugoton, was past board president of Western Prairie Care Home and a former member of the Grant County School Board.
He is survived by four daughters, Roberta Garrett, Liberal, Betty Jo Reeves, Loveland, Colo., Sue Patten, Midland, Texas, and Jane Hewson, Garden City; two sisters, Esther Woods, Stinett, Texas, and Vesta Pinkerton, Pineville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Edwin Carl Porter Jr.
Edwin Carl Porter Jr., 89, a longtime Garden City resident, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Life Care of Aurora in Aurora, Colo.
He was born Aug. 7, 1912, at Wichita, the son of Edwin Carl Sr. and Lula Mae Clampitt Porter. He grew up and attended schools in Wichita, where his parents were the founders of Rounds and Porter Lumber Co. He attended the University of Kansas.
In 1941, he moved to Garden City and founded Ed Porter Lumber Co. He had lived in the Denver area since 1994.
Mr. Porter was a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church of Garden City, Elks Lodge, National Lumberman's Association and the National Ready Mix Concrete Association.
In July 1939, he married Esther Stuber at Winfield. She died in 1975. He also was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
He married Maxine Mercer on Dec. 27, 1977, at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by four sons, Ed Porter III, Garden City, Phillip Porter, Fort Collins, Colo., Ben Porter, Woodland Park, Colo., and Kirk Porter, Durango, Colo.; two grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Larry Steadman officiating.
Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Garden City Community College Endowment Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Beatrice Anna Wasson
Funeral for Beatrice Anna Wasson, 88, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Wasson died Friday, April 26, 2002, at Homestead Assisted Living Residence in Garden City.
She was born March 19, 1914, at Vinland, the daughter of Barrett and Stella Hoskinson Andrews. The family moved to a farm south of Pierceville in Gray County when she was 9. She attended country schools, attended Copeland High School and graduated from Pierceville High School.
On Nov. 24, 1934, she married Lawrence O. Wasson at Garden City. They moved into Garden City in 1941. While her children were growing up, she served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. A homemaker, she was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City where she served on various committees and was a longtime Sunday School teacher. She also belonged to the Finney County Historical Society, Daughters of American Revolution and Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo.
Her husband died Sept. 21, 1976. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.
Survivors include two sons, Lawrence R. "Larry" Wasson, Belpre, and Kenneth Wasson, Rolla; a daughter, Peggy Schmidt, Golden, Colo.; three brothers, Bill, Hugh and Raymond Andrews, all of Garden City; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the family there from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or Vinland Cemetery

Mary Ann 'Marie' Wedel
MONTEZUMA - Mary Ann "Marie" Wedel, 80, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.
She was born Jan. 13, 1922, at Montezuma, the daughter of Henry and Anna Wiens Toews.
A lifetime resident of Montezuma, she was a homemaker and belonged to Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.
On Feb. 13, 1944, she married Harry David Wedel at Montezuma. He survives. She is also survived by a son, John H. Wedel, Hillsdales, Okla.; four daughters, Sylvia Smith, Muleshoe, Texas, Velma Wedel and Grace Wedel, both of Grafton, N.D., and Marcia Toews of Elma, Manitoba, Canada; two brothers, David Toews, Montezuma, and Walter Toews, Grant, Neb.; seven sisters, Martha Penner, Nettie Goossen and Esther Penner, all of Rosenorth, Manitoba, Canada, Ruth Schmidt, Iroquois, S.D., Elizabeth Toews, Ulysses, Frances Penner, Whitemouth, Manitoba, Canada, and Clara Epson, Dodge City; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David H. Wedel; and a sister, Susie Toews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Donald Koehn, Charles Schmidt and Glen Yost, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

John W. Dearth
Graveside service for John W. Dearth, 69, a former Garden City resident, was to be 3 p.m. today in Greenwood Cemetery, Oatville.
Mr. Dearth died Sunday, April 28, 2002.
Born at Holcomb on April 18, 1933, he was the son of Roy T. and Sarah Ruth Calhoun Dearth.
A Wichita resident, Mr. Dearth was retired after working as an operator for Vulcan Chemical Co.
He is survived by his wife, Beverley, of the home; a son, David Dearth, Wichita; a daughter, Debbie Charles, Wichita; a brother, Doug Dearth, Woodland Park, Colo.; a sister, Barbara Embry, Fort Collins, Colo.; a grandson; three stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-granddaughter.
Downing & Lahey Mortuary West Chapel, Wichita, was in charge of arrangements.
Joseph B. Rohling
INGALLS - Parish rosary for Joseph B. Rohling, 90, of Cunningham, will be 7 tonight at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cunningham, with the Rev. John Miller as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Rohling died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Sept. 21, 1911, at Waterloo, the son of Herman and Anna Kruep Rohling.
A longtime resident of the Cunningham community, he was a retired production and drilling superintendent for Skelly Oil. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the St. Leo Knights of Columbus.
On Aug. 27, 1935, he married Lucy Ebenkamp at Cunningham. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Richard, Pratt; four daughters, Mary Kummer, Great Bend, Marlene Miller, Ingalls, JoAnn Clouse, Goodland, and Janet Schield, Spearville; a brother, Herman, Kingman; a sister, Pauline Depenbusch, Zenda; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Leo, Raymond and Vic; three sisters, Anna Detmer, Mary Meng and Cecilia Epp; and a grandson.

Jessie L. Perez
Vigil service for Jessie L. Perez, 83, of Garden City, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms as celebrant. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Perez died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born April 23, 1919, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Bonifacio and Maria Briniones Lopez. The family moved to Deerfield when she was a child, and she attended schools there.
On May 5, 1934, she married Juan Perez at Coolidge. They lived in Coolidge for a short time before moving to Holcomb and then to Lakin in 1941. He died June 20, 1978. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tony Perez; three brothers, Frank, Manuel and Gabino Lopez; and a granddaughter.
A Garden City resident since 1996, Mrs. Perez was a homemaker. She also had worked as a cook at Scotty's Cafe and once had her own day care center. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Lakin and the Altar Society, volunteered for the local Heart Association, and enjoyed bowling, crocheting, sewing and dancing.
She is survived by three sons, Val Perez and John Perez Jr., both of Lakin, and Richard Perez, Kendall; six daughters, Pat Avila, Garden City, Delilah Vincent, Forsythe, Mo., Ruby Escalada, Wichita, Nellie Bribiesca, Baldwin Park, Calif., Lupe Longoria and Teresa Perez, both of Lakin; three brothers, Eleno Lopez, Atchison, Paul Lopez, Garden City, and Ralph Lopez, Deerfield; a sister, Hope Lehman, Deerfield; 39 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
