Freda Sanders
SCOTT CITY - Freda Sanders, 89, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
Born July 1, 1912, in Rush County, she was the daughter of William and Lydia (Wertz) Rodenberg.
She had been a Scott City resident since 1916, having moved from Rush County to a farm in northeast Scott County. After graduating from high school, she taught in several Scott County rural schools. She also ran a service station, a taxi service and her farm, but was primarily a maid and housekeeper for motels and private homes. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City.
In the mid-1930s, she married Robert Barker. He died shortly after their marriage. She married Arthur Gunckle on Oct. 5, 1940, at Scott City. He died Feb. 2, 1960, at Scott City. On April 28, 1966, she married Morris Sanders at Scott City. He died May 18, 1973, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lester and Alvin; and a sister, Lelia Carter.
She is survived by two sisters. Edna Wood, Scott City, and Serena Schoonover, Dodge City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Ministerial Alliance Breadbasket, in care of the funeral home.
Norma 'Darlene' Horner
ULYSSES - Graveside service for Norma "Darlene" Horner, 70, of Ulysses, will be 1 p.m. MST Friday in Fleming (Colo.) Cemetery.
Mrs. Horner died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Dodge City.
She was born May 8, 1931, in rural Ulysses, the daughter of John Victor and Berniece Brewer Carter.
A homemaker, she spent most of her life in the Ulysses area. Her hobbies included cooking and ordering from catalogs. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and with her pets.
Her husband, Ellsworth Elmer Horner, died in 1982. She was also preceded in death by her father; two sons, Casimiro "Bill" Dianda and Robert "Bob" Dianda; a daughter, Mariena Lyn Horner; and a brother, Marvin Dean Carter.
Survivors include her mother, Ulysses; two grandsons; three granddaughters; three stepsons, Marlin Horner, Kersey, Colo., Lanny Horner, Fort Collins, Colo., and Byron Horner, Colorado; two sisters, Elaine Gierhart, Colby, and Betty Walls, Ulysses; and several great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Visitation hours are until 4 tonight at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.
Clarence Ewalt
Clarence Ewalt, 86, a former area resident, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Centennial Health Care in Greeley, Colo.
He was born Feb. 7, 1916, at Great Bend, the son of Eugene and Flossie Brown Ewalt. He grew up in Great Bend and attended schools there.
Mr. Ewalt served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from November 1940 to December 1945 during World War II.
On Aug. 18, 1941, he married Maryellen Carter at Reno, Nev. They lived in Great Bend, San Francisco and Cimarron before moving to Holcomb in 1949. She died March 30, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
A farmer, Mr. Ewalt also was a seed dealer for DeKalb Seeds for 28 years. He retired from farming in 1980, retired from DeKalb in 1990 and moved to Greeley in 1999. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both at Garden City, belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons, served on the Finney County Fair Board for several years and served as a grain inspector for the Finney County ASCS. He enjoyed playing snooker, watching television and dining out.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Culbreath, Gill, Colo.; a sister, Clara Smith, Great Bend; a stepsister, Julia Bruce, Santa Fe, N.M.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Jerald Lee Mullins
Funeral for Jerald Lee Mullins, 54, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Mount Herman Church, Jay, Okla., followed by burial in Dickson Cemetery.
Mr. Mullins, a former Garden City resident, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Grove General Hospital in Grove, Okla.
He was born June 19, 1947, at Siloam Springs, Ark., the son of James Riley and Lucy Pearl Clarey.
After attending school, he joined the U.S. Army in May 1964, serving until May 1967. On Dec. 23, 1968, he married Patsy Button.
Mr. Mullins worked for the Garden City Co-op as an elevator maintenance man and truck driver. In 1998, the family moved to Jay, where he was employed by Morehead Construction and later opened J&P Country Tires. He was a member of Mount Herman Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Richardson, Kiowa, Colo.; two daughters, Lucinda K. Coyne, Elkins, Ark., and Amanda Beckley, Wichita; five brothers; six sisters; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jerry; and a sister, Lillie.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at Turner Funeral Chapel in Jay.
Paul B. Heyman
ULYSSES - Funeral for Paul B. Heyman, 89, of Ulysses, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Mr. Heyman died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence.
He was born May 19, 1912, near Walthall, Va., the son of Paul B. Sr. and Anna Radtke Heyman.
A longtime Ulysses resident, he had taught school in Richfield, Satanta and Ulysses. He then began farming in Grant County, was a real estate broker, and owned and operated the Heyman Agency in Ulysses.
Mr. Heyman was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 435 A.F. & A.M., and Order of the Eastern Star, all at Ulysses, belonged to York Rite Masonry Garden City Chapter 83 and Commandery No. 50, was a past Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons Kansas, and was a member and past president of the Ulysses Rotary Club.
On Aug. 12, 1934, he married Pauline M. Dougan at her parent's farm south of Ulysses. She died Aug. 24, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Howard Heyman.
He is survived by two daughters, Josandra "Jo" Barnes, Lawrence, and Pam Loucks, LaHonda, Calif.; a sister, Olga Smith, Elkhart; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. today and 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.
Craig Martin
DIGHTON - Craig Martin, 47, of Dighton, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Olathe.
He was born Sept. 8, 1954, at Scott City, the son of Robert and Bessie Harris Martin. He grew up on a farm in Lane County, helping on the family dairy by delivering milk through his grade school years. He graduated in 1973 from Dighton High School. In 1975, he married Kim Kuhlman.
He moved to Hutchinson in 1975 and worked construction before moving to Mesa, Ariz., in 1976. In 1977, he returned to Dighton and bought his first truck. In 1980, he became the owner-operator of J.C.M. Trucking and bought, sold and hauled grain.
Mr. Martin was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by three sons, Robby Martin, Olathe, T.J. Martin and Kevin Martin, both of Lawrence; a daughter, Alyson Martin, Overland Park; his mother and stepfather, Bessie and John Heath, Dighton; three sisters, Bobi Linden and Chris Mumma, both of Dighton, and Debi Seybold, Dodge City; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father.
Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dighton. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. David Kraus as celebrant. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the Dighton Public School Foundation - Craig Martin Memorial (football stadium renovation), in care of the funeral home.
Perry D. Wilcox
Perry D. Wilcox, 77, of Independence, Mo., died Saturday, April 13, 2002.
He was born May 20, 1924, at La Junta, Colo., the son of Ray and Esther Wilcox, and grew up in Garden City.
During World War II, Mr. Wilcox was an ensign in the U.S. Navy Air Corp. In 1949, he received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Mr. Wilcox owned and managed a shoe store in Lyons until moving to Independence in 1964 where he became marketing director for the Blue Ridge Mall Shopping Center. He served in that position for 28 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the American Legion, Kiwanis Club and St. Mark's Catholic Church, and was a volunteer with many organizations, including the Neighborhood Councils of Independence, Truman Library and Museum, Independence Tourism Department, and the Independence Industrial Development and Authority.
He married Eileen Deutschman in 1949. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Stephen, Wichita, and Jeffrey, Columbia, Mo.; two daughters, Marcia Michels, Lakewood, Colo., and Tierney Bowman, Blue Springs, Mo.; two sisters, Charlotte Spikes, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Roberta Jones, Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Ron, San Diego; three granddaughters; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Funeral Mass was 10 a.m. April 17 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Independence.
Speakes Memorial Chapel, Independence, was in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth E. Dillon
Funeral for Elizabeth Ermalee Dillon, 62, a former Garden City resident, will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Rosewood Funeral Home, Humble, Texas, with the Rev. Mary Magnusson officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Humble.
Mrs. Dillon died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Kingwood, Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard Dillon; three sons, Gregg, Dan and Brad Dillon; a daughter, Cheryl Barrett; eight grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Henning; and two brothers, Don and John Taylor.
