Ethel Edith Withers
MONTEZUMA - Ethel Edith Withers, 89, of Montezuma and formerly of Pierceville, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born June 29, 1912, in Gray County, the daughter of Thomas James and Mary Edith (Kern) Meador.
A lifetime resident of the area, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland.
On Dec. 23, 1931, she married Albert Ray Withers at her parent's home in Finney County. He died Nov. 30, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leigh and Johnnie Meador; three sisters, Erma Taton, Marian Caldwell and Alta Peacock; and a granddaughter.
Survivors include five sons, Lawrence Withers, Copeland, Raymond and Charles Withers, both of Detroit, Texas, Harry Withers, Larned, and Paul Withers, Blossom, Texas; a daughter, Alberta Schmidt, Cyrus, Minn.; a brother, Roy Meador, Satanta; two sisters, Hattie Lashmett, Grand Junction, Colo., and Ida Maye Long, Minneola; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. James Koehn and Verle Jost, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. at Montezuma or Hope For Haiti, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Leon A. Dawson
Private family graveside service for Leon A. Dawson, 72, was today in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Dawson died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born July 20, 1929, at Garden City, the son of Earl and Fay (Miller) Dawson. He grew up in Garden City, graduating from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College.
A career U.S. Air Force man, he was double rated as both a radar observer and pilot and reached the rank of major. He returned to Garden City in 2001.
He is survived by three sons, Jeffery Dawson, Garden City, Kelly Dawson, Arvada, Colo., and Gregg Dawson, Denver; a brother, Lawrence Dawson, Garden City; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ivan Dawson.
Memorials are suggested to the Finney County Humane Society, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Walterena Agnes Livengood
SUBLETTE - Funeral for Walterena Agnes Livengood, 69, of Sublette, will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Church Of The Nazarene, Sublette, with the Rev. William Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Mrs. Livengood died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Nov. 23, 1932, at Garden City, the daughter of Walter and Lora (Alexander) Taton.
A lifetime resident of Sublette, she enjoyed driving the school bus for Sublette School District No. 374 for almost 33 years. She was active in the church and enjoyed her many church families. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, and enjoyed the many children she had on her bus routes.
On July 24, 1949, she married Floyd Livengood at Sublette. He survives. She is also survived by two sons, Donald Livengood, Manhattan, and Lonald Livengood, Wichita Falls, Texas; two daughters, Connie Rigney, Wichita Falls, and Bonnie Mehrer, Sublette; three sisters, Dolly Hockett, Caney, Daisy Whithorn, Parsons, and Betty Buschmann, Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Ray Livengood; two brothers, Frank Eugene Taton and Ora Taton; and a stepgrandchild.

Harold R. Kitch
Naomi Evelyn Kersey Washburn, 79, of Greensboro, N.C., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002.
She was born in Garden City on Nov. 4, 1922, the daughter of Ralph Teeter and Florence (Garloch) Kersey.
On May 11, 1944, she married James "Jimmie" Cummings Washburn Jr., in Garden City. In 1947, they moved to North Carolina, living at various times in Elon, Carrboro, Raleigh, Fayetteville and Goldsboro, while raising five children. They returned to Kansas in 1969 and lived in Kansas City until retiring to Greensboro in 1986.
When she wasn't working in her home or in her various jobs outside the home, Mrs. Washburn loved to listen to music, enjoyed needlepoint and reading, and from her earliest years she occasionally wrote poetry.
Survivors include her children, Bruce Kersey Washburn, Michael Wayne Washburn, Evelyn Marie Washburn Bitar and Mark Jeffrey Washburn; and a sister, Pauline Kersey Miner, Sublette. Her husband died in 2000. She was also preceded in death by a son, James "Jim" Cummings Washburn III, who died in 1995; and a brother, Paul G. Kersey, who died in 1944.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Congregational United Church of Christ, Greensboro. The family suggests memorials to the church, 400 Radiance Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408; or to Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. of Greensboro.
Naomi (Willis) Gregory
SYRACUSE - Naomi (Willis) Gregory, 94, a former Syracuse resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Goodland Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 28, 1907, at Carlisle, Ind., the daughter of Thomas Willis and Mabel (Calvert) Willis. As her father was a minister, the family lived in various locations in Indiana, Michigan and Oklahoma before moving to Kansas. In 1925, she graduated from high school in Fredonia.
In 1931, she moved to Syracuse where she met Henry "Ward" Gregory while she was teaching at the Rising Star School, southwest of Syracuse. They married on June 8, 1941, at Toronto, Kan.
Mrs. Gregory taught school for six years and was a homemaker. A member of the Wesleyan Church in Syracuse, she was involved with church work, serving as a Sunday School teacher, making flower arrangements for the sanctuary and playing the piano.
She was a former school board member for Rising Star School and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed growing and sharing the vegetables and fruits from her garden and orchard, loved flowers, was an avid rock hound, and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, tatting, knitting and spending time with her family.
Her husband died in January 1987. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joseph Samuel Willis; and a sister, Mildred Keller.
Mrs. Gregory moved to Goodland in 1992 to be near family. In November 1999, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center.
She is survived by a son, Gary Ward Gregory, Goodland; a daughter, Carol Ann Rothfuss, Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a nephew.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. A graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Naomi Gregory Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.
Violet Irene Joiner
LAKIN - Funeral for Violet Irene Joiner, 82, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mrs. Joiner died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
She was born Oct. 19, 1919, in northern Kearny County, the daughter of August and Clara (Preusch) Kuhlman. After graduating from Lakin High School in 1937, she attended Dague Business College in Wichita. She then worked as a secretary for Western Machinery Co., Wichita.
On Dec. 26, 1941, she married Arthur V. Joiner at Wichita. They lived on a farm in western Kansas and then moved back to the family farm in Kearny County in 1944 where she helped her husband with the farming. In 1995, they moved into Lakin. Mrs. Joiner reported the North Kearny County news in the Lakin Independent for 27 years.
A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lakin, she belonged to the Lutheran Womens Missionary League and the church Bible Study group. She was a member of the County Extension Community Builders Club, served as a 4-H leader and project leader for many years, and enjoyed raising a large garden every year and maintaining beautiful flower beds.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Carolyn Andrews, Bartlesville, Okla., and Catherine Urie, Lakin; a son, Carl Joiner, Kingwood, Texas; a brother, Elton Kuhlman, Great Bend; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.
Mildred A. Metheney
LEOTI - Graveside service for Mildred A. Metheney, 87, was to be 1 p.m. today in Leoti Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick Woolard officiating.
A homemaker, Mrs. Metheney died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was born May 27, 1914, north of Marienthal, the daughter of Sam and Dora (Norton) Wing. She graduated from Holcomb High School.
In 1945, she married Virgil J.E. Metheney. He died in 1990.
She is survived by a son, Everett Metheney, Colorado Springs; a brother, Willard Wing, Iowa; three sisters, Esther Smith, Michigan, Goldie Nelson, Scott City, and Vera Walton, Sterling; and two grandchildren.

LuElla (Reimer) Jost
LuElla (Reimer) Jost, 88, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 8, 1913, in rural Hillsboro, the daughter of John J. and Marie (Ratzlaff) Reimer.
A homemaker, she was a member of Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, Hillsboro.
On Nov. 9, 1930, she married John F. Jost at Hillsboro. He died in 1999.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry and Lowell Jost, both of Hillsboro; a daughter, Twilla Siebert, Garden City; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, Hillsboro. Tim Sullivan and Roy Keller, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Gnadeneu Cemetery
in rural Hillsboro.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Women's Missionary Society, in care of the memorial chapel.
