LaVera Veneva Hynek

Funeral for LaVera Veneva Hynek, 59, of Haddam, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ward Funeral Home, Washington, with the Rev. John Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Morrowville Cemetery.

Mrs. Hynek died Monday, March 11, 2002, at Belleville Long Term Care.

She was born April 18, 1942, at Wamego, the daughter of Elmer and Veneva Eichem.

Since 1980, she had resided on a farm between Morrowville and Haddam. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper at the Washington County Health Department and at the True Value store in at Fairbury, Neb.

On Feb. 9, 1980, she married William G. Hynek at Morrowville. He survives. She is also survived by her mother, Veneva Bosse, Westmoreland; a son, LaVern Durst, Garden City; three stepsons, Todd D. Hynek, Morrowville, William G. Hynek Jr., Manhattan, and Darin Hynek, Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Charlotte Engelman, Hartsel, Colo., and Charlene Wilhelm, Sabetha; two sisters, LaVon Griffith, Manhattan, and Virginia Haffner, Coffeyville; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Durst, on Jan. 21, 1977; and her father.

There will be no visitation. Memorials in her name may be sent in care of the funeral home, 115 W. Second St., Washington, KS 66968.

Paul F. Marsteller

DIGHTON - Graveside service for Paul Franklin Marsteller, 87, will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating.

Mr. Marsteller died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Lane County Long Term Care in Dighton.

He was born June 4, 1914, in Edwards County, the son of Charles and Bertha (Hargadine) Marsteller. In 1918, the family moved to Logan County where he attended school. He graduated from Winona High School in 1932.

In 1940, he moved to a farm south of Healy and began farming, later moving into Healy. He ran the Oakley Livestock Commission in 1954 and 1955, and moved to Dighton in 1956 and became a partner in the Dighton Livestock Market until 1961. He was elected Lane County Sheriff in 1962 and was appointed Dighton Chief of Police in 1972. He held both positions until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Marsteller loved his job of being the sheriff and enjoyed the people he served. After his retirement, he enjoyed his horses and going to horse sales with his son, grandson and friends. He also enjoyed telling stories, being "Mr. Fix-It" and spending time with his family.

On July 6, 1940, he married Jeanne Maxine Strobel at Winona. She died April 23, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leslie Marsteller; and a sister, Lelia M. Craik.

He is survived by a son, Chuck Marsteller, Dighton; a sister, Lola Bretz, Wallace; a sister-in-law, Jackie Mumma, Scott City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials to the Paul Marsteller Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

June G. Crotinger

TRIBUNE - June G. Crotinger, 87, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born June 13, 1914, in Morton County, the daughter of Fred and Clare (Tipton) Glenn. After attending high school at Syracuse, she attended Wichita Business College.

On July 14, 1942, she married William H. Crotinger at Syracuse. They lived on a farm in Greeley County from 1942 until moving to Garden City in 1959. Since then, she had lived in Garden City and in Tribune.

A homemaker, Mrs. Crotinger enjoyed her family activities and reading. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Star Club, both at Garden City.

Her husband died July 6, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Marshall Glenn; a sister, Mary Cuttler; and a grandson.

Survivors include three sons, James L. and Fred H. Crotinger, both of Tribune, and Ronald W. Crotinger, Concordia; three daughters, Marsha Engelken, Vermillion, Mary Kaye Chandler, Holcomb, and Mavis Houk, Marshall, Texas; a brother, Reed Glenn, Wichita; a sister, Ethel May, Hot Springs, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Friday at the United Methodist Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Keith Fink officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Greeley County Library, Greeley County Home Health, Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo or the Vermillion Ball Field, all in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ruby V. Adams

DEERFIELD - Ruby V. Adams, 85, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born Jan. 12, 1917, at Collinsville, Okla., the daughter of Ensign and Kitty Pearl (Hawk) Downer.

A Deerfield resident since 1956, moving from Holcomb, she was a homemaker. A member of the Christian faith, her interests included spending time with her children and grandchildren and working in her yard and garden.

On May 23, 1931, she married William Roy Adams at Garden City. He died Feb. 6, 1972, at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by a son, Harris Adams; a daughter, Jo Bumgarner; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister.

In October 1997, she married Alvin "Gabby" Fuqua at Deerfield. He survives. She is also survived by five sons, Eugene Adams, Overbrook, Robert Adams, Parker, Ariz., David Adams, Leslie Adams and Bill Phillips, all of Garden City; a daughter, Penny Grauberger, Deerfield; two sisters, Maxine Marshall, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Pauline LaMarr, Kansas City, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kearny County Hospital or High Plains Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Euna M. Olsen

Funeral for Euna M. Olsen, 98, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Ray Holman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Olsen died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

She was born April 13, 1903, in Pawnee County, the daughter of George and Alice (White) Wilcox. The family moved from Pawnee County to Finney County in 1904 and into Garden City in 1921.

Mrs. Olsen worked as an assistant chief operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone for seven years and as a photographer for Conard's Studio for 16 years. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, was Past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge and a former member of Lincoln Goodwill EHU.

On Jan. 1, 1945, she married Herbert Olsen at Garden City. He died July 5, 1973, at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters.

Survivors include a son, Herbe Olsen, Garden City; a daughter, Carol Tracy, Wichita; a brother, Claude Wilcox, Copeland; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Gene Hartford Scott

Gene Hartford Scott, 78, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at his home in St. John.

He was born Oct. 15, 1923, at Liberal, the son of Roy Hartford and Sina Comora Scott.

Mr. Scott had been a resident of St. John since 1953, moving from Liberal. He worked for Northern Natural Gas Co. for 40 years and was a bus driver for St. John schools for 12 years.

He was a member, deacon and trustee at First Baptist Church of St. John, was a Gideon, served on the boards of the Shepherd Center and the Senior Citizens of St. John, belonged to the VFW, served as a city councilman for several years, was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and attended classes at Barton County Community College.

On Jan. 23, 1946, he married Earline Scott at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Dan Scott, Great Bend, and Ron Scott, Dodge City; a sister, Mary Ruth Snyder, Garden City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles William Scott.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, St. John, with the Rev. David A. Ford officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel Inc., St. John. Memorials are suggested to Hynes Memorial Hospice, First Baptist Church, Diabetes Foundation or the Gideons, all in care of the chapel.

Clara Anna Scheopner

Rosary and community wake service for Clara Anna Scheopner, 86, of Goodland, will be 8 MT tonight at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Goodland. Funeral will be 10 a.m. MT Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Daryl Olmstead officiating. Burial will follow in Goodland Cemetery.

Mrs. Scheopner died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.

She was born Oct. 26, 1915, at Plainville, the daughter of Louis L. and Mary Theresa (DeWald) Huber. In August 1917, the family moved to a farm 7 1/2 miles north of Goodland. She attended grade school at District 7, graduated from Sherman County High School in 1933, and taught in a country school for three years.

Mrs. Scheopner was active in the Catholic church, Altar Society, Association of Retarded Citizens and the Goodland Senior Center. Her family was recognized as the Kansas Knights of Columbus Family of the Year in 1990 and as runner-up in the International Family of the Year in 1991. In 2001, she was named queen for the SCHS/GHS alumni reunion.

On June 2, 1937, she married Clarence Scheopner. He survives. She is also survived by nine children, Harold Scheopner, Atchison, Phyllis Gertge, Fort Morgan, Colo., Irene Light, Cambridge, Neb., Joan Charles, Weskan, Richard, Andy and Judy Scheopner, all of Goodland, Cathy Esquibel, Dodge City, and John Scheopner, Garden City; 28 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Leona Church, New Plymouth, Idaho; and a brother, Leo Huber, Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Martin and Joe Huber; two sisters, Gertrude Abbott and Margaret Witthar; a grandson; and a grandson-in-law.

Visitation hours are from 6 to 7 MT tonight and until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or Goodland Senior Center, both in care of Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Goodland, KS 67735-1555.

Theodore 'Buddy' Tabor

Theodore "Buddy" Tabor, 64, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born June 20, 1937, at Garden City, the son of Theodore and Isabel (Smith) Tabor. He attended school in Garden City.

Mr. Tabor worked for IBP for nine years, retiring in 1990 because of ill health. Prior to working at IBP, he was a construction worker. A member of Word of Life Church, his hobbies included carpentry, fishing and woodworking.

On Aug. 5, 1995, he married Delfina Bracamonte at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Greer, Houston, and Judy Jones, Tulsa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clifford Tabor; and a sister, Bertie Carroll.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Word of Life Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Don Newman officiating.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Theodore Tabor Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Nellie Leona Spruce

ULYSSES - Funeral for Nellie Leona Spruce, 91, of McAlester, Okla., was to be 10 this morning at Bishop Chapel of Memories, McAlester, followed by burial in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Spruce died Friday, March 1, 2002, at her home.

She was born March 23, 1910, at Weatherford, Texas, the daughter of Denny Wilson and Lena Belle (Ames) Kidwell. Growing up in Weatherford, she attended Fox School where she enjoyed playing basketball. She moved to Lake Creek, Okla., in 1926.

On Dec. 21, 1927, she married Benjamin Thomas Spruce at Mangum, Okla. They moved to McAlester in 1981.

An artist, Mrs. Spruce enjoyed playing the piano and guitar, working in her flower garden and sewing. She was a member of First Christian Church. After receiving her General Educational Development certificate at the age of 79, she escorted classes for graduation for three years.

She is survived by three sons, Frank Bib Spruce, Montgomery, Ala., Thomas Ray Spruce, McAlester, and Bobby Lewis Spruce, Garland, Texas; a daughter, Nellie Jeannice Walters, Ulysses; two brothers, Frank Kidwell, Memphis, Tenn., and Oran Glandon, Oakland, Calif.; two sisters, Elsie Hammer, St. George, Utah, and Dorothy Garner, Ivino, Utah; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband died in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Willie Gene Spruce; three grandsons; one granddaughter; three sisters; and two brothers.
