Gerald Calvin Smith
HUGOTON - Gerald Calvin Smith, 60, of Paramont, Calif., and formerly of Hugoton, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Centinela Hospital in Inglewood, Calif.
Born July 23, 1941, at Hugoton, to Calvin Gilbert and Fern (Moon) Smith, he graduated from Hugoton High School.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge from the service, he moved to California. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, first as a carrier then as a registered cage clerk in Compton, Calif. He enjoyed spending time with his family and also enjoyed football, baseball and basketball.
Survivors include three sisters, Lola Mae Morris, Liberal, Eloise Owens and Donna Hopkins, both of Wichita; several nephews and nieces; and a godson, Jesse Martinez of Lynwood, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Chapel Church Of God In Christ, Hugoton. Lawrence Johnson, elder, will officiate. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
Dr. B. Morris Hopkins
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Dr. B. Morris Hopkins, 78, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Hopkins died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
He was born Nov. 14, 1923, at Horton, the son of Bishop M. and Lila May (Powers) Hopkins. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1949 and from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1953, and completed his internship at District of Columbia General Hospital in 1954.
A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was past president of the Scott City Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Scott City Planning Commission, served on several regional health planning boards, was actively involved in EMT training, and enjoyed being the team physician for the high school wrestling and football teams. A member of First Christian Church, he was involved in Christian Men's Fellowship, was past board chairman and church elder and was a member of Neil Norman's Sunday School class.
Mr. Hopkins was a former member of the Lions Club, was a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice, Fellow of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, belonged to the Kansas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Southwest Kansas Medical Society and the Jayhawk Society and was a life member of the KU Medical Alumni.
On Aug. 1, 1956, he married Marvel Jacqueline Scott at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Luke M. Hopkins, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law; a grandson; and a sister, Marguerite Johnson, Broomfield, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Hopkins; and two sisters, Ruth Smith and Jean Barnes.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, Scott County Hospital or Park Lane Nursing Home, all in care of the funeral home.
Hazel May Skidmore
CIMARRON - Hazel May Skidmore, 86, a former Cimarron resident, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Sun City, Ariz., where she had lived for 13 years.
She was born Nov. 12, 1915, at Cimarron, the daughter of Aaron Wesley and Neva (Zimmerman) Ott.
Mrs. Skidmore was a member of Church Of The Nazarene at Cimarron and the American Legion Auxiliary in Peoria, Ariz. She enjoyed spending time with her family and also enjoyed crafts. A homemaker, she owned and operated cafes for many years.
In 1932, she married Harvey Skidmore at Dodge City. He died in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Franklin and Walter Ott; an infant son; a granddaughter; and a grandson.
She is survived by two sons, Leroy Skidmore, Dothan, Ala., and Gary Skidmore, Montezuma; five daughters, Doris Ann Price, Hutchinson, Janet McLaughlin, Dexter, Jane Swaffar, Cimarron, Jackie Boyd, Montezuma, and Donna Unruh, Sun City; a stepdaughter, Eunice Garlock, Whittier, Calif.; her special friend, Louis Nicotera, Sun City; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church Of The Nazarene, Cimarron, with the Rev. Jim Bond and Steve Skidmore officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma Funeral Home, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Cimarron and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann DeCamp
HUGOTON - Funeral for Shirley Ann DeCamp, 52, a former Hugoton resident, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Hays, with the Rev. William C. Miller officiating. A second service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of God in Hugoton, with the Rev. Bill Vincent officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Mrs. DeCamp died Friday, March 8, 2002, at her home in Hays.
She was born March 4, 1950, at Liberal, the daughter of Wayne and Shirley (Fulkerson) DeCamp. She was a nurse's aide and was also employed as a caterer at Fort Hays State University.
Survivors include her parents, Hugoton; two sons, Philip Billinger, Jacksonville, Fla., and Matthew Billinger, Hays; a brother, Bill DeCamp, Hugoton; and three sisters, Eileen Gregg and Darlene Harper, both of Hugoton, and Linda Ceilley, Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a brother, John DeCamp.

Farrice Davidson
Johnson CITY - Farrice Davidson, 91, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Rolling Hills Health Center in Topeka.
She was born July 30, 1910, at Cherokee, Okla., the daughter of William John and Rosella (Helmich) Bender.
Mrs. Davidson was a school teacher in Walsh, Colo., Bucklin and Johnson City. A resident of Johnson City since 1946, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mothers Club, and Helluo Librorum Club, all at Johnson City.
On June 10, 1940, she married Lysle A. Davidson Sr. at Johnson City. He died Sept. 20, 1982. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Forest and Wayne Bender; and four sisters, Erdene Bender, Twila Shetler, Arlyn Kendrick and Grace Hogue.
She is survived by a son, Lysle Davidson Jr., Johnson City; a daughter, Frances A. Squyres, Topeka; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Albert Leo Finkenbinder
SYRACUSE - Albert Leo Finkenbinder, 90, died Thursday, March 7, 2002.
He was born Nov. 15, 1911, at Friend, to Albert and Sophie Finkenbinder, the eighth of nine children. His family moved to northern Hamilton County in wagons and on horseback to homestead when he was 6.
Mr. Finkenbinder farmed and ranched in Hamilton County until his retirement in 1983. He then moved to Haysville where he enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
He married Lola Baldwin on July 15, 1931. She died Nov. 16, 1968. On Sept. 27, 1969, he married Lily Slaven-Penney. She survives at Oklahoma City. He is also survived by a daughter, Wanda Stallings, Garden City; four sons, Leo, Oklahoma City, Darl, Amarillo, Texas, Arthur, Scammon Bay, Alaska, and William of Clearwater; a stepdaughter, Dawn Griffith, Oklahoma City; a sister, Lena Moltz, Syracuse; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. MST Monday at Syracuse Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9 to 11:30 a.m. MST at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
Beatrice Stephens
ULYSSES - Graveside service for Beatrice Stephens, 78, of Ulysses, will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Ulysses Cemetery.
She died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, is in charge of arrangements.
Donna I. Byler
Graveside service for Donna I. Byler, 75, was to be 10:30 this morning in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.
Mrs. Byler died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Asispencia Villa in Redlands, Calif.
She was born May 29, 1926, in Pratt County, the daughter of Luther Thomas and Edith (Rogers) Bell. She grew up on the family farm in the Kalvesta area, graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College, received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Fort Hays State University and her master's degree in biological science from Wichita State University.
Throughout her career, she taught biology and nursing. She began teaching in Denver and later taught in Independence. She then worked as a long-term substitute teacher in various places throughout Kansas. She retired to care for her mother back in Garden City. They later moved to Phoenix. In 1997, she moved to California to be closer to her son.
Mrs. Byler enjoyed singing, playing the keyboard and guitar, oil and watercolor painting, her cats, traveling and especially enjoyed taking college classes in various subjects. She also liked to study natural history and was a member of the Smithsonian Institute.
She is survived by a son, Gary Byler, Sun City, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Packer, Mansfield, Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Louise A. 'Luisa' Garcia
Vigil service and rosary for Louise A. "Luisa" Garcia, 82, of Wichita, will be 8:15 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. A rosary is also planned for 7 tonight at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wichita.
Mrs. Garcia died Tuesday, March 12, 2002.
Born in Garden City on March 25, 1919, she was the daughter of Rosalio E. and Alvina (Rocha) Ayala. She was retired after working as a clerk at the City of Wichita Health Department.
She is survived by three sons, James P. Garcia and Ernest E. Garcia, both of Wichita, and Francis X. Garcia, Denver; two daughters, Alvina Reyes and Ana Garcia Farinas, both of Wichita; a sister, Katherine Ayala, Garden City; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, which is handling local arrangements.
