Raymond J. Schmidt
SCOTT CITY - Raymond J. Schmidt, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born June 24, 1917, at Heizer, the son of Charles W. and Anna C. (Schmer) Schmidt.
A Scott City resident since 1948, moving from Seward, he was a farmer and stockman. He belonged to First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge No. 284, Investment Club and Scott County Shrine Club, all at Scott City, the ISIS Shrine Temple at Salina and the Kansas Livestock Association.
On Oct. 1, 1950, he married Betty P. Rice at Great Bend. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Susan Carter, Scott City; a brother, Warren Schmidt, Rose Hill; a sister, Melba Woods, Larned; a cousin; numerous nieces and nephews; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edward C. Schmidt.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Revs. John Warring and Mike McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or Scott County Shrine Club Children's Travel Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
Frank Elder
LEOTI - Funeral for Frank Elder, 78, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Paul McNall officiating. Burial will be in Wichita County Cemetery, Leoti.
Mr. Elder died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti.
He was born Jan. 16, 1924, at Leoti, the son of Roy E. and Helen E. (Graham) Elder.
A lifetime resident of Leoti, he was a farmer. He was a member of Parks Presbyterian Church of Leoti, a lifetime member of Leoti VFW and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Nov. 14, 1982, he married Janice I. Peterson at Phoenix. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Bill M. Elder, Penrose, Colo.; a daughter, Deanne R. Dechant, Healy; a stepson, Darrin Cox, Anthony; a stepdaughter, Denise Pister, Brandon, S.D.; a brother, Leroy "Buck" Elder, Leoti; four sisters, Alice Summers, Bessie Burch and Neva Duncan, all of Leoti, and Ruby Whitney, Denver; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Harold L. Hoover
SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Harold L. Hoover, 74, was to be 10:30 this morning at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial was to be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Hoover died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at his home in Scott City.
He was born Jan. 28, 1928, at Scott City, the son of Harley and Ruth Ann (Huff) Hoover.
A 1954 graduate of Coyne Electrical School, he was the owner and operator of Hoover Electric until his retirement. He also retired after 44 years as a volunteer fireman with the Scott County Fire Department.
A lifetime resident of Scott City, Mr. Hoover was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City and Sand Hills Radio Club of Garden City.
On Oct. 14, 1956, he married Mary Ann Wikle at Scott City. She died Aug. 11, 2000, at Scott City. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sarah Ann.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa K. Erikson, Stafford, Va.; a son, Eric Hoover, Pleasantville, N.J.; a brother, James Kenneth Hoover, Scott City; two cousins; and four grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or the VIP Center, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Alberta A. Rupp
Memorial Mass for Alberta A. Rupp, 69, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with the Rev. Ted A. Skalsky officiating.
Mrs. Rupp died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at the Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Fort Dodge.
She was born Nov. 25, 1932, at Garden City, the daughter of Vern O. and Flora P. (Bursk) Simmons.
A Fort Dodge resident since November 1989, moving from Garden City, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and VFW Auxiliary of Fort Dodge.
On Jan. 2, 1951, she married Adam W. Rupp at Garden City. He survives. She is also survived by six sons, Roger Kaiser, Howard, Colo., Steven Rupp, Mike Rupp and David Rupp, all of Garden City, Chris Rupp, Sioux City, Iowa, and Pat Rupp, Dodge City; two daughters, Jeanne Johnson and Laurenda Jewett, both of Holcomb; two sisters, Lauretta Cheney, Scott City, and Melba Barber, San Antonio; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign the register until 8 tonight at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Fort Dodge VFW Auxiliary, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
Lois Louise Mangels
ROLLA - Lois Louise Mangels, 77, of Rolla, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.
She was born Jan. 15, 1925, at Sylvia, the daughter of Harley and Ethel (Snowbarger) Melville.
On June 6, 1946, she married Van F. Mangels at Sylvia. She helped her husband on their farm. They also enjoyed traveling and seeing different parts of the country. They had visited every state except one, including Alaska and Hawaii, and also traveled to Mexico.
A homemaker, Mrs. Mangels was also a registered nurse. She belonged to Rolla United Methodist Church, and enjoyed her family activities and cooking.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Bill Mangels, Cypress, Texas, Phillip Mangels, Rolla, and Lynn Mangels, Katy, Texas; a brother, Bill Melville, Platteville, Wis.; two sisters, Gen McElroy, Pascagoula, Miss., and Betty Franco, Cedar Park, Texas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bob Melville.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rolla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Keating officiating. Burial will be in Rolla Cemetery.

Bernice Pace
Bernice Pace, 97, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 28, 1904, at Garden City, the daughter of Charles M. and Maude (Leith) Green. She attended Garden City schools before the family moved to Michigan and Colorado for a short time before returning to Garden City.
On Nov. 16, 1924, she married William "Bill" Pace at Garden City, where they lived until moving to Ellis in 1960. They returned to Garden City in 1971.
A homemaker, Mrs. Pace enjoyed sewing for her family, quilting, crocheting, latchhook rugs, painting and fishing. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include three daughters, Ann Roth and Thelma Rose, both of Garden City, and Mildred Falconer, Wheatland, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died May 29, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Urban Pace; a brother, Frank Green; and a sister, Margaret Horton.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Agnes Unruh
COPELAND - Agnes Unruh, 97, a former Copeland resident, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.
She was born July 21, 1904, at Durham in Marion County, the daughter of Henry X. and Minnie (Dirks) Smith. In 1915, the family moved from Marion County to Montezuma.
A homemaker, she was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland.
On March 18, 1923, she married Sam I. Unruh at Montezuma. He survives. She is also survived by four sons, Cecil, Louis, Eugene and Sam D. Unruh Jr., all of Copeland; seven daughters, Louella Koehn, Vada Unruh, Shirley Unruh, Maxine Schmidt and Jeanette Nightengale, all of Copeland, Juanita Nightengale, Scott City, and Sylvia Wedel, Reno, Texas; a brother, David X. Smith, Montezuma; a sister, Irene Koehn, Sublette; 35 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Lois Unruh; six brothers, Albert, Dewey, Archie, John, Lines and Fred Smith; three sisters, Lena Yost, Lizzie Koehn and Alice Smith; two daughters-in-law; a son-in-law; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. Verle Yost, Stanley Unruh and Charles Nightengale, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.

Winona M. Breitkreutz
LEOTI - Winona M. Breitkreutz, 76, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.
She was born Feb. 18, 1925, at Monte Vista, Colo., the daughter of Everett and Winsome (Hart) Green.
A Leoti resident since 1946, moving from Lakin, she had been a bus driver for the Wichita County school district in Leoti for 28 years. She was a member of the Christian faith.
On May 8, 1946, she married Walter Breitkreutz at Lydia. He died Oct. 2, 1995, at Scott City.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth and David Breitkreutz, both of Leoti; two brothers, Clyde and Marvin Green, both of Garden City; three sisters, Lola Norton and Wanda Jo Craig, both of Garden City, and Lois Humphreys, Santa Ana, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Revs. Rick Just and Warren Hett officiating. Burial will be in Wichita County Cemetery, Leoti.
