Gertrude Burkhart Shobe
Rosary for Gertrude Burkhart Shobe, 88, of Hutchinson, was Monday at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Hutchinson. Funeral Mass was 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Brian Bebak officiating. Burial is planned for later in California.
Mrs. Shobe died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born July 20, 1913, at Kinsley, the daughter of Isadore and Mary (Oster) Burkhart.
A Hutchinson resident since June 1996, moving from Canoga Park, Calif., she was a bonder in the aerospace industry. During World War II, she worked for Beechcraft, Wichita. She belonged to Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella, Kinsley.
On June 4, 1955, she married Charles Myron Shobe at Wichita. He died Dec. 23, 1994. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Celesta Burkhart.
She is survived by four brothers, Leon and Paul Burkhart, both of Syracuse, Isador Burkhart, Denver, and Elred Burkhart, Kinsley; a sister, Monica Reilley, Garden City; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Time of Grace Campaign at Holy Cross or the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery
Fund at Kinsley, both in care of the funeral home.
Esther Peaster
MONTEZUMA - Esther Peaster, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.
She was born Sept. 21, 1924, at Durham, the daughter of Solomon and Ida (Ratzlaff) Voth.
On Aug. 30, 1942, she married Archie Eugene Peaster at Winton, Calif. They moved from Okolona, Miss., to Montezuma on Dec. 2, 1996. He died Nov. 8, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ramona Dawn Peaster; a brother, Ben Voth; and a sister, Evelyn Nichols.
A homemaker, Mrs. Peaster was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Okolona.
She is survived by two sons, Larry E. Peaster, Clayton, Wis., and Dale H. Peaster, Okolona; a daughter, Gloria Buller, Nettleton, Miss.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Edwin Classen, Luther Smith and Kalvin Salsbury, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Lucy M. Thiele
SCOTT CITY - Lucy M. Thiele, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 24, 1913, at Scott City, the daughter of Thomas W. and Anna (Epperson) Givens. A 1931 graduate of Scott Community High School, she was active in clubs and won several contest awards playing piano.
On June 14, 1935, she married Richard Thiele at Garden City. They moved to Salina in December 1937, to Oakley in 1945 and to Scott City in 1948. They opened the Drive-In Market grocery store in 1951, and opened a coin-operated laundry next to the store in 1958. She also began teaching piano lessons in their home before their retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Thiele was a member of First Christian Church, Federated Music Club, Eastern Star No. 359, CWF and the El Quartelejo Study Club, all at Scott City.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Anderson, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nancy Thiele, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two grandsons; three nieces; two nephews; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband died March 29, 1988, at Colorado Springs. She was also preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott City Music Club Scholarship Fund, Park Lane Nursing Home or First Christian Church, all in care of the funeral home.
Ernest S. Meyers
Funeral for Ernest S. Meyers, 86, will be 9 a.m. Thursday at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, followed by buried in Mayfield Cemetery.
Mr. Meyers died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002.
He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Sophia Harvey Meyers; his children, Jody S. Meyers, Bronxville, N.Y., and Betsy R. Kramer, Garden City; three grandchildren; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Paulette Shore Meyers; and a daughter, Stephanie J.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, in care of the chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Road, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118-2197.
Clarence 'Pete' Black
SCOTT CITY - Clarence "Pete" Black, 87, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Oct. 22, 1914, at Norman, Ark., the son of John W. and LeVicia (Rowden) Black. After growing up and attending school in Arkansas, he worked on the family farm there.
He moved to Dighton and worked as a carpenter for Harry Smith. In 1959, he moved to Scott City and worked as a carpenter for Ed Haas and Paul Kitterman. He later worked as a self-employed carpenter for eight years before his retirement. His special interests were fishing with his wife, telling stories and his family activities.
On March 6, 1937, he married Reba Keen at Hope, Ark. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Fern Black, Centennial, Colo.; two sons, John Black, Lees Summit, Mo., and James Black, Littleton, Colo.; a sister, Myrtle Black of Hope; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joyce Hafliger; a grandson; three sisters; and one brother.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Kerry Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
Hyvette Ortega

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with the Rev. Ted A. Skalsky officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Hyvette died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Limon, Colo. Her sister also died in the accident.
She was born Aug. 22, 1991, at Dodge City, the daughter of Rafael and Hilda (Soto) Ortega. She attended school in Garden City after moving here in 1998.
She is survived by her mother, Denver; and her father, Garden City.

Stella Moore
Funeral for Stella Moore, 93, a former Garden City resident, was to be 1 p.m. today at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel, Carthage, Mo., followed by burial in New Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Moore died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002.
She was born Jan. 22, 1909, at Texarkana, Ark., the daughter of William and Mary (Smith) George.
A Carthage resident since 1984, she was a homemaker and belonged to Rebekah Lodge No. 844 and Evangel Assembly of God Church in Carthage.
On April 18, 1925, she married Joe Moore at Kennett, Mo. He died Dec. 28, 1988. She was also preceded in death by a son, Thurman Moore; and a daughter, Retha Miller.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Dunlap and Virginia Owens, both of Carthage; three sisters, Adalee Masterson, Gertrude House and Mamie Maynard, all of Carthage; 21 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Roberto Z. Salazar
SATANTA - Roberto Z. Salazar, 56, of Satanta, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 7, 1945, at Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Natividad and Maria de Jesus (Zubia) Salazar.
On Oct. 26, 1972, he married Maria Irma Aguirre at Ojinaga. They moved from Mexico to the Satanta area in May 1970. A farm laborer, he was a member of Sinai Pentecostal Church in Sublette.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Natividad Salazar and Juan G. Salazar, both of Satanta; two daughters, Balbina Acosta, Liberal, and Esther Salazar, Satanta; two brothers, Benjamin Salazar, Andrews, Texas, and Felix Salazar, Satanta; three sisters, Maria Isabel Ramirez, Satanta, Maria Luisa Molina, Ojinaga, and Vicky Trevizo, Dallas; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sinai Pentecostal Church, Sublette, with the Rev. Stil Guerrero Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
