Remedios 'Mayo' Guillen

Remedios "Mayo" Guillen, 85, of Hutchinson, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Sept. 25, 1916, at Penjamo, Mexico, the daughter of Ponciano and Issabelle (Negrete) Hernandez. She graduated from Garden City High School and attended Garden City Community College.

Mrs. Guillen had worked for more than 20 years as a clerk in the Finney County Treasurers Office, the Assessors Office and the Migrant Health Office. She also worked for United Methodist Mexican-American Ministries as a community developer.

A Hutchinson resident since 1984, she was a member of the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church of Hutchinson and the United Methodist Women.

On Aug. 12, 1937, she married Jesus M. "Jess" Guillen at Orway, Colo. He died Feb. 24, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert and Joseph Guillen; and three sisters, Mary Duran, Mary Louise Ortiz and Genieve Musquez.

She is survived by four daughters, Linda Juarez, Ocala, Fla., Margo Hernandez, Hutchinson, Vickie Smiddy, Pryor, Okla., and Rebecca Brown, Haven; two sisters, Sarah Hernandez, Amarillo, Texas, and Issabel Orosco, Garden City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Alan Stambaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Patricia M. Naab

Patricia M. Naab, 70, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born June 9, 1931, at Dodge City, the daughter of William C. and May Agness (Conner) Nolan. After graduating from Great Bend High School in 1949 and from St. Catherine School of Nursing in 1953, she had worked for several doctors in Garden City.

On Jan. 6, 1956, she married Harold James Naab at Dodge City. While her husband attended school in 1956-57, she worked at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. From 1958 until 1978, she worked at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, serving at different times as operating room supervisor, pediatrics head nurse, house supervisor and schedule supervisor.

In 1978, she and her husband opened Baan Tech Business Products in Garden City, where she worked as the bookkeeper until they closed the business in 1994.

Mrs. Naab was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City and Daughters of Isabella, and was a former State Sister of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling and shopping on QVC.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Judy Keaton and Linda Naab-Carr, both of Garden City; two sons, Thomas G. Naab, Garden City, and Joseph W. Naab, San Antonio; and eight grandchildren.

Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday and noon to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. The casket will be open at the funeral home only. Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Pearle (Webb) Nelson

Johnson CITY - Funeral for Pearle (Webb) Nelson, 99, of Johnson City, will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Church of the Nazarene, Big Bow, with the Revs. Ken Armstrong and W.O. Boomer officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Mrs. Nelson died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.

She was born Sept. 13, 1902, at Arispe, Iowa, the daughter of John Ritchea and Ona (Moyer) Webb.

She was a school teacher for the school districts in Hodgeman, Osborn and Rooks counties, worked as a telephone operator and secretary and was a Sunday School teacher and a homemaker. Her memberships included Church of God (Holiness) Church at Natoma, Bethel Church of the Nazarene at Johnson City and the Bear Cats Sunday School class.

On Dec. 25, 1920, she married Laurence E. Nelson at Shelbyville, Mo. He died in January 1983. She also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Nelson, Norton, and J.C. Nelson, Johnson City; two daughters, Ona Barber, Johnson City, and Ellen Clair, Columbia, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the Bethel Nazarene Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Donald H. Johnson

Donald H. Johnson, 72, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.

He was born April 4, 1929, at Copeland, the son of Paul and Bertha (Walker) Johnson. He grew up in Sublette and attended schools there.

On Dec. 6, 1949, he married Carole Betts. They lived in Garden City until moving to Fort Scott in 1997. Mr. Johnson was the owner and operator of Don's Shoe and Leather Shop and of Don's Auto Sales in Garden City, retiring in 1990. He served in the U.S. Army in the 1950s during the Korean War. He enjoyed trap shooting, golf, raising cattle while living in Fort Scott and also enjoyed working in his wood shop.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Tracy Johnson, Austin, Texas; a daughter, Shellye Frizzell, Brenham, Texas; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Margarette Johnson.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church of Garden City or Diamond Church of Fort Scott, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Leslie 'Rex' Unruh

COPELAND - Leslie "Rex" Unruh, 31, of Copeland, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident north of Liberal on U.S. Highway 83 at the Cimarron Bridge.

He was born Nov. 17, 1970, at Garden City, the son of Leslie J. and Gertrude J. (Fricke) Unruh.

A lifetime resident of Copeland, he was a truck driver working for Unruh Grain Inc., Copeland. He attended the United Methodist Church at Copeland. He enjoyed his family, especially his children, and also enjoyed trucking and model trucks.

He is survived by two sons, Jonathan Rex Unruh and James Wayne Unruh, both of the home; a daughter, Chloe Kay Unruh, Denham Springs, La.; his parents, Copeland; a brother, Garold J. Unruh, Copeland; and a sister, Gina Joy Cash, Copeland. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley Wayne Unruh, in 1967; and his grandparents, Lincoln and Elda Unruh, and Samuel L. and Katherine Fricke.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Copeland Junior High School Auditorium. Warren Cico, Sam Unruh Jr. and Verle Yost, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the Education Fund for his children and may be left at Dunham Drilling in Copeland or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Theresa Mendoza Bribiesca

Vigil service for Theresa Mendoza Bribiesca, 64, will be 8 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating, assisted by Deacon Martin Hermocillo. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Bribiesca died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 19, 1937, at Penjamo, Mexico, the daughter of Jose Remedios and Ventura (Cervantes) Mendoza.

A Garden City resident since 1956, moving from Penjamo, she worked as a housekeeper for various families in Garden City, and as a custodian for the Garden City school district and St. Catherine Hospital Cafeteria.

Mrs. Bribiesca was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. Her hobbies were cooking, gardening, flowers, walking in the park, watching television (especially the Spanish station), and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

On Feb. 8, 1956, she married Vicente Carmen Bribiesca at Penjamo. He died Dec. 15, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her father and a sister.

She is survived by 10 sons, Vicente Bribiesca Jr., Abel, Carlos and Ernesto Bribiesca, all of Garden City, Stephen, Pomona, Calif., Jesse Bribiesca Sr., Hutchinson, Ramon, Baldwin Park, Calif., Louis, Anaheim, Calif., Albert and Reginald Bribiesca, both of Downey, Calif.; two daughters, Martha Bribiesca, Garden City, and Alvina Bribiesca, Anaheim; her mother, Mexico; four brothers, Juan, Antonio, Ramon and Roberto Mendoza, all of Mexico; three sisters, Remedio and Amalia Mendoza, both of Mexico, and Maria Elena Palacios, Garden City; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Nikki Lea Davis

Funeral for Nikki Lea Davis, 24, of Aurora, Ill., will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, with the Rev. Lyle Knuth officiating. Burial will be in Brownell Cemetery, Brownell.

Miss Davis died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

Born in Garden City on July 23, 1977, she was the daughter of Randy and Kathy (Simmons) Davis.

A resident of Aurora since 1995, she was a custom framer for the Great Frame Shop in Naperville, Ill.

She is survived by her parents, Marvin and Kathy Davis Roberts; her grandparents, Phyllis Green of Ellis, and Gilbert and Betty Hamilton, Ingalls; a brother, Jeremy Davis, Lincoln, Neb.; three stepsisters; a niece; several aunts and uncles; and her boyfriend, Dan Schlender of Aurora. She was preceded in death by her father, in 1997, and her grandfather, Norman Green.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 9 tonight and 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the National Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in care of the funeral home.

Mary Margarite Brueggeman

SCOTT CITY - Mary Margarite Brueggeman, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.

She was born Nov. 23, 1912, at Holly, Colo., the daughter of Ralph and Mary Katherine (Mueller) Muzzall.

A Dodge City resident since 1960, moving from Hoisington, she was a licensed practical nurse, retiring in the late 1980s. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hoisington and a former member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

On Nov. 5, 1932, she married Edwin B. Brueggeman at Garden City. He died July 20, 1999, at Dodge City. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

Survivors include a son, Duane Brueggeman, Alexander, Ark.; two sisters, Charlotte Brack, Hoisington, and Genevieve Conn, Platte City, Mo.; three grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Prairie, in care of the funeral home.
